This book provides a novel method to teach eponymically named physical signs of the alimentary tract and intrabdominal organs. The main aim of this book is to introduce a group of models and modelling of information and knowledge comprehensibly. Such models and the processes for how to create them help to improve the skills to analyse and structure thoughts and ideas, to become more precise, to gain a deeper understanding of the matter being modelled, and to assist with specific tasks where modelling helps, such as reading comprehension and summarisation of text. The book draws ideas and transferrable approaches from the plethora of types of models and the methods, techniques, tools, procedures, and methodologies to create them in computer science. This book covers five principal declarative modelling approaches to model information and knowledge for different, yet related, purposes. It starts with entry-level mind mapping, to proceed to biological models and diagrams, onward to conceptual data models in software development, and from there to ontologies in artificial intelligence and all the way to ontology in philosophy. Each successive chapter about a type of model solves limitations of the preceding one and turns up the analytical skills a notch. These what-and-how for each type of model is followed by an integrative chapter that ties them together, comparing their strengths and key characteristics, ethics in modelling, and how to design a modelling language. In so doing, we'll address key questions such as: what type of models are there? How do you build one? What can you do with a model? Which type of model is best for what purpose? Why do all that modelling? This thesis addresses deep questions that cut to the physical and informational essence of central chemical quantities such as transition paths and reaction mechanisms and proposes fundamental new connections between transition-path theory, linear-response theory, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and information theory. The author investigates slow, energetically efficient driving protocols that drive a system between conformations corresponding to endpoints of a reaction, aiming to find connections between principles of efficient driving and the spontaneous transition mechanism in the absence of driving. First, an alternative perspective of transition-path theory is developed that unifies it with stochastic thermodynamics to describe flows of entropy, energy, and information during the reaction. This also provides an optimization criterion for selecting collective variables. Next, protocols are designed which invert the magnetization of a 3×3 Ising model with minimal energetic cost, and it is determined that using multiple control parameters allows the system to be driven along a fast-relaxing pathway between reaction endpoints. Finally, the author compares these protocols with the spontaneous transition mechanism for magnetization inversion in the same Ising model, finding that designed protocols capture general features of the spontaneous mechanism and energetics given the constraints on the control parameters. This work represents a major step forward in our understanding of rare events and provides a basis for investigating the connection between efficient protocols and spontaneous transition mechanisms which can be further probed in a wider variety of systems.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt am Main, in 1923, this book aims at shedding light on the archives of some of the key thinkers of Critical Theory of Society, also well known as "Frankfurt School". The 15th Meeting on Chemical Signals in Vertebrates (CSiV) reunited participants from 20 countries from 5 continents who "electronically commuted" to Dijon, France, during three days (3-5 November 2021). This virtual meeting was a great opportunity to share information on how amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals communicate through chemosignals and integrate their environment through chemical cues. Scientists from varied disciplines ranging from biology and psychology to chemistry and biostatistics attended the meeting to share their research on how vertebrates produce and release chemical cues and signals, how they detect, discriminate, process, and interpret them; how they respond to them behaviorally, physiologically, and/or neurally in adaptive ways; how the typical or atypical environment modulates such chemocommunication loops, and chemoreception in general. In total, this 2021 CSiV meeting presented important new findings, representative of the growing points in the rapidly expanding field of research on chemocommunication among vertebrates. As appreciated by D Müller-Schwarze (a well-known pioneer in the field and the founding father of the book series in question) in his foreword to the meeting, "Our field has broadened to new horizons: besides multicomponent cues, we now learn about multisource and multifunction chemical signals. The range of study animals and settings has become richer, and we have learned enough that practical applications are becoming realistic." The Peritoneal cavity (PC) is the key metastatic site for intra-abdominal malignancies (e.g., GI tract and rectal cancer). PC sites can be used to target several other diseases where lymphatic drug delivery is desired without dumping large amounts of the drug. Till recently, it was thought that treatment with curative intent was impossible but that was challenged by the introduction of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), and PIPAC (pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy). Recently, a growing number of preclinical and clinical studies advocate intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy as an alternative post-operative therapy for cancer. Although their effectiveness has been proven both experimentally and clinically, there is still little understanding of the role of drug delivery systems (DDS) in targeting drugs in the intraperitoneal (IP) cavity.There are two main challenges one posed by IP cavity where the residence time of a small molecular weight drug (In summary, challenges like delivery to IP cavity, tumor or organ-specific targeting, efficient tissue penetration, optimal cellular uptake and intracellular residence of a drug, biocompatibility, toxicity, etc can be easily solved by smartly designing functional drug delivery systems (both nano and micro). Nanotechnologies have always fascinated humans for several decades and are now widely explored in the biomedical field. Diverse types of nanoparticles are being explored around the world, some examples include biodegradable nanoparticles, green nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, lipid nanoparticles, metal nanoparticles, graphene, carbon nanotubes, and several others. Now a day's nanoparticles are gaining interest for drug targeting of chemotherapeutic drugs, immunotherapy, and gene delivery. Whereas microparticles can be explored for delayed drug delivery to the peritoneal cavity due to relatively slow removal from IP fluid. Despite being commonly prescribed in inpatient settings, intravenous fluids are often administered without evidence-based guidelines, neglecting essential considerations such as the fact they are drugs, that need proper dosing, duration, indications, contraindications, side effects, and de-escalation. This book fills this knowledge gap. Each chapter starts with a clinical vignette and a related question, followed by a concise summary abstract, key learning points, main text, and a conclusion that addresses the clinical question and provides relevant take-home messages. This book presents an enticing introduction to tropical circuits and their use as a rigorous mathematical model for dynamic programming (DP), which is one of the most fundamental algorithmic paradigms for solving combinatorial, discrete optimization problems. In DP, an optimization problem is broken up into smaller subproblems that are solved recursively. Many classical DP algorithms are pure in that they only use the basic (min, +) or (max, +) operations in their recursion equations. In tropical circuits, these operations are used as gates. Thanks to the rigorous combinatorial nature of tropical circuits, elements from the Boolean and arithmetic circuit complexity can be used to obtain lower bounds for tropical circuits, which play a crucial role in understanding the limitations and capabilities of these computational models.
