This book analyzes cyberdefense from a novel and interdisciplinary perspective, offering solutions for problems that have long impeded a more efficient defense. It explains why cyberdefense organized and performed by humans is too slow, too cumbersome, and too ineffective. Combining the analytical capabilities of experts in operations research and management, international security studies, economics, risk analysis, and defense management, the volume addresses these problems of current cyberdefense. The authors present suggestions for the next generation of cyberdefense, explaining why the future defense must focus on speeding up responses, why a single response may not be enough, and why effectiveness requires foresight. This makes the book a must-read for scholars, researchers, intelligence analysts, homeland security staff, and professionals who are interested in learning more about the issues of current cyberdefense, as well assolutions for the next generation of cyberdefense.
In the automotive sector, digitalisation, connectivity and automation are rapidly expanding. In tomorrow¿s vehicles, human beings will merely be passengers ¿ which raises a host of complex legal issues regarding accidents involving self-driving vehicles. This book is the first to offer a comprehensive, global overview of civil liability regimes for all levels of vehicle automation in jurisdictions that represent some of the most important markets for the automotive industry. After a technical introduction to how self-driving cars work, the individual chapters analyse the liability for driving automation at SAE J3016 levels 0 through 5 from a country-specific perspective. All chapters were written by experts in the field and follow a uniform legal structure. Hence, the book offers an essential comparative analysis of similarities and differences in the jurisdictions examined, while also providing suggestions for future legislative changes at the national and international level. The book is not only relevant for legal scholars and practitioners but will also be of particular interest to anyone involved in the design, manufacture, distribution and operation of self-driving vehicles.

The book will appeal to all caregivers working in the field of diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, in particular otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, neurologists, sleep doctors, maxillofacial surgeons, anesthetists, and also the personnel working in sleep labs, general nurses and scrub nurses, physician assistants, and sleep technicians.
Global Warming: Truth and Consequences is a guidebook for persons who are unfamiliar with the relevant details but want to know what anthropogenic global warming and its repercussions entail. The first chapter presents background material on the earth's climate system and some of the global warming rejecters' claims and their refutations, including the evidence underlying the reality of anthropogenic global warming. The next chapter examines in detail many of the global warming's contemporaneous and deleterious repercussions, while the final one considers some future scenarios and their likely consequences, some of which are from the latest IPCC Reports. It also presents a number of the proposed steps to avoid these consequences and the problems of implementing them.
Hansen¿s disease (leprosy) is endemic in more than 100 countries worldwide, with over 200,000 new diagnoses each year and more than 4 million people living with some form of HD-related impairment. The World Health Organization¿s ¿Global Leprosy Strategy¿ timeline for Hansen¿s disease elimination indicates that it will be encountered in clinical practice in endemic countries for at least another decade. Increasing north-to-south migration, global travel and overseas medical work mean that physicians in non-endemic countries will also encounter patients with Hansen¿s disease, which can affect people for many years before diagnosis and after treatment. For busy clinicians, it represents a challenge, in terms of disease learning and updating knowledge and skills. This book provides a concise, up-to-date, and comprehensive source of information on Hansen¿s disease clinical practice. It covers essential topics on all clinical aspects, complemented by history, epidemiology, paleopathology, and the social impact of the disease. Edited and written by contributors with decades of experience, it¿s divided into twenty-six chapters clarifying the genetics and neurological manifestations, physical disabilities and its prevention; oral, ophthalmological, and bone changes, among others. For the primary audience of practicing physicians, it is an affordable point of reference, whilst also being suitable for student and trainee doctors. It¿s also accessible to general practitioners and specialists in dermatology, neurology, pediatrics, infectious disease, family and community medicine, and orthopedics, as well as to non-specialists and other healthcare professionals.
This practical and handy textbook offers a succinct yet comprehensive overview of the main challenges, issues and solutions in global health in relation to the UN¿s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 agenda.Subdivided into 11 parts, devoted each to a macro-topic, the book opens with an introduction to Global Health followed by an overview of the global burden of disease ¿ from child and maternal health to communicable and non-communicable diseases. The authors further examine the social determinants of health, health systems¿ features as well as innovations, governance and methods in Global Health. In consideration of the emerging discussions and ideas, and beyond the more traditional and essential elements of global health, the book also looks at the need to re-think the whole concept of global health and the importance of a ¿decolonized¿ approach that engages low and lower-middle countries fully. One entire part is then devoted to analyzing the major threats to the health of humanity such as climate change, the need for an ecological approach to health (including ¿One Health¿ approaches), and, ultimately, planetary health.Written by an international panel of more than 100 experts, this manual will be an excellent resource for students in a broad range of disciplines ¿ from medicine and other scientific studies to economics, social science, anthropology and international relations. Pragmatic and reader-friendly, it will further be a valuable tool for policymakers, program implementers and those wishing to build knowledge on the meaning, principles and practices of global health.

Sounds can be harmonic, number sequences too - a coincidence? This book deals with a musical theory of proportions, i.e. the ancient doctrine of proportions as the oldest and most important common anchorage of the two cultural sciences mathematics and music. The musical theory of tones, intervals, tetrachords, sounds and scales is in fact the exact musical image of the laws of arithmetic and its symmetries in the set of rules of playing with numbers, their proportions and their medievals. Alone the miracle of the so-called Harmonia perfecta maxima 6 - 8 - 9 - 12, whose proportions determine the fifth as well as the fourth, form the octave and have the brazen whole tone in their center, shaped the musical edifice of Pythagorean music for thousands of years. This elementary chain of proportions 6: 8: 9: 12 is, moreover, completely symmetrical and built up from the arithmetic as well as from the harmonic medieta of the octave numbers 6 and 12.This book develops the theory of proportions as a mathematical science and always contrasts it with the musical motivation by means of numerous examples. The main idea is the derivation of a theory of symmetry from the Harmonia perfecta maxima to the Harmonia perfecta infinita abstracta, a process of unlimited tone generations by Babylonian mean iterations. From this, both the classical-antique diatonic is simultaneously extracted and the path "from the monochord to the organ" is re-examined.Finally, the work contains a mathematically guided introduction to the ancient tetrachordics as well as to the church tonal scales and concludes with an excursion into the sound worlds of the organ. Here the "foot-number rule of the organ" leads us by means of examples into the world of the tonal dispositions of this instrument and shows the omnipresence of the ancient theory of proportions. This book is suitable for anyone with an interest in mathematics and music. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Proportionen und ihre Musik by Karlheinz Schüffler, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.
This book is a socio-legal interdisciplinary study on gender and diversity in multicultural societies of Europe. It uses secondary data to discuss the broad experiences of migrant single mothers/women in Europe. Second, it includes narratives of experiences across the life course of single Danish-Pakistani women, starting from their pre-migration background to their elderly lives. The author uses an analytical framework used of relational collectivism and individualism, the former referring to the understanding of oneself as connected and interdependent to the family, and the latter referring to values of independence, personal interest and achievements. She uses the term "mélange familism" to explain a new family type that combines both relational-collectivist and individualist elements. A major part of this work is its deliberation of mélange familism and processes of social and legal practices in the everyday lives of single mothers. Crucially, the book demonstrates that social and legal traditions are not static, but are a product of improvisation. It makes a significant contribution by providing an alternate picture of single women/mothers as against the stereotypical image of 'passive, subordinate Muslim women'. It also contributes to gender and family studies by showing the increasing establishment of single-mother-headed households as a source of new possibilities; a new type or form of family construction, and not just the tragic residue of a broken two-parent family.

This book combines the field of economics -especially monetary theory- with other disciplines like ecology, physics, humanities, social sciences and development theory. This transdisciplinary approach makes the book a unique contribution for researchers, students, policy makers and professionals working in governmental or nongovernmental institutions, as well as anyone interested in society's well-being and achieving a true social-ecological transformation. It is written in an accessible language in order to reach a broad audience. In 2015, more than 190 world leaders recognized that the world is on a "collision course" (Max-Neef) and committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many conferences and high-level meetings have been held since then, and one of the most frequently discussed topics is how to finance these goals. There is a widespread belief that coming up with more money for sustainable development will "do the trick". Usually, the discussions focus on finding additional financial resources in order to achieve the goals faster. In this book it is argued that not only is more money needed, but it needs to be a different kind of money. The book demonstrates that ALL but one of the SDGs are directly linked to our monetary system, which -being completely unnatural- can be seen as the most important, but at the same time least recognized, reason for market failure. Many people think we just need to do more, faster, better. Very few say that we have done things fundamentally wrong and that the institutions and values which motivated us to do those things need to be changed. It will be concluded that only if we change our unnatural design of money to a more natural one, will we be able to reach these goals
