This book provides up-to-date information on the environmental impact of transgenic trees on genetically modified tree (GMT) communication strategy. It is useful to public/private organisations as well as to private and public research bodies and universities worldwide since it reports on the global status of GMT research and policy.
The book considers the changes which national sovereignty has undergone through the supranational European integration.
This book explains why the climate change crisis is a symptom of a much larger underlying problem - namely, humankind's predilection with continuous GDP-growth.
The book provides an overview ofresearch on the remarkable diversity, adaptive genetic differentiation, andevolutionary complexity of intertidal macroalgae species. Through incorporatingmolecular data, ecological niche and model-based phylogeographic inference, this book presents the latest findings and hypotheses on the spatialdistribution and evolution of seaweeds in the context of historical climatechange (e.g. the Quaternary ice ages), contemporary global warming, andincreased anthropogenic influences. The chapters in this book highlight pastand current research on seaweed phylogeography andpredict the future trends and directions. This book frames a number of researchcases to review how biogeographic processes and interactive eco-geneticdynamics shaped the demographic histories of seaweeds, which furthermoreenhances our understanding of speciation and diversification in the sea.Dr. Zi-Min Hu is an associateprofessor at Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao,China.Dr. Ceridwen Fraser is asenior lecturer at Fenner School of Environment and Society, AustralianNational University, Canberra, Australia.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of magnetic levitation(Maglev) technologies, from fundamental principles through to thestate-of-the-art, and describes applications both realised and underdevelopment. It includes a history of Maglev science and technology showing thevarious milestones in its advancement.
This pioneering book presents new models for the thermomechanical behavior of composite materials and structures taking into account internal physico-chemical transformations such as thermodecomposition, sublimation and melting at high temperatures (up to 3000 K). It is of great importance for the design of new thermostable materials and for the investigation of reliability and fire safety of composite structures. It also supports the investigation of interaction of composites with laser irradiation and the design of heat-shield systems. Structural methods are presented for calculating the effective mechanical and thermal properties of matrices, fibres and unidirectional, reinforced by dispersed particles and textile composites, in terms of properties of their constituent phases. Useful calculation methods are developed for characteristics such as the rate of thermomechanical erosion of composites under high-speed flow and the heat deformation of composites with account of chemical shrinkage. The author expansively compares modeling results with experimental data, and readers will find unique experimental results on mechanical and thermal properties of composites under temperatures up to 3000 K. Chapters show how the behavior of composite shells under high temperatures is simulated by the finite-element method and so cylindrical and axisymmetric composite shells and composite plates are investigated under local high-temperature heating. < The book will be of interest to researchers and to engineers designing composite structures, and invaluable to materials scientists developing advanced performance thermostable materials.

This unique monograph covers recent theoretical and experimental results on the complex character of f electrons in materials containing lanthanides (rare earths) or actinides, such as alpha-cerium and delta-plutonium. It answers the urgent need for a general presentation of the body of experimental and theoretical results presently available in this challenging domain. Some of the fast developing applications of lanthanide and actinide materials are mentioned.Materials containing atoms with an open f shell have electronic and crystalline properties that are controlled by the localized or delocalized character of the f electrons. This book gives a theoretical discussion of the various spectroscopic methods that shed light on the character of the f electrons and on the connection between their localization and the properties of these materials.Part 1 covers the characteristics of the f electrons in atoms and solids and includes a discussion of the properties of lanthanides and actinides in connection with the f electrons.Part 2 describes the various spectroscopic methods that are used to establish the electronic distributions and energies of the states. Examples involve the determination of f electron distributions by high energy spectroscopy methods with separate treatment of the valence and core electrons.Part 3 concentrates on the theoretical treatment of electronic transitions involving felectrons and simulations of the lanthanide spectra, including comparison with the available experimental data.Part 4 discusses the localized or delocalized character of the f electrons in actinides and their compounds, including comparison (analogies & differences) between the 4f and 5f electron materials. This monograph should be of great value for researchers, academics and engineers working in the fields of high energy spectroscopy, electronic and nuclear science and technology, as well as materials involving rare earths and radio-elements.
The main objective of the Water Framework Directive in the European countries is to achieve a "good status" of all the water bodies, in the integrated management of river basins.
