Experimental particle physics is a science of many scales. A large number of physical processes spanning energies from meV to TeV must be understood for modern collider experiments to be designed, built, and conducted successfully. This thesis contributes to the understanding of phenomena across this entire dynamic range. The first half of this document studies aspects of low-energy physics that govern the operation of particle detectors, limit their performance, and guide the development of novel instrumentation. To formalise these aspects, classical electrodynamics is used to derive a general description of the formation of electrical signals in detectors, and ideas from quantum mechanics are applied to the study of charge avalanche amplification in semiconductors. These results lead to a comprehensive analytical characterisation of the time resolution and the efficiency of single-photon avalanche diodes, and isolate the most important design variables. They also reveal the applicability of these devices in precision timing detectors for charged particles, which is experimentally verified in a high-energy hadron beam. Large detector systems at hadron colliders probe fundamental physics at the energy frontier. In the second half, data collected with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider are used to measure the cross-section for the production of a Higgs boson together with an electroweak boson as a function of the kinematic scale of the process. This measurement provides the finest granularity available to date for this process. It is highly informative of the structure of interactions beyond the direct kinematic reach of the experiment, and new limits are set on the couplings of such interactions within an effective field theory.

Esophageal and gastric pathology are challenging, and the underlying physiology is complex. Advanced diagnostic testing is extensive, and the results can often be difficult to interpret. The impact of these findings on tailored treatment modalities has evolved as a result. This manual is therefore designed to present a comprehensive review of the various esophageal and gastric functional pathologies, diagnostic modalities and treatment options. Chapters included here focus on challenging functional pathologies encountered by both gastroenterologists and surgeons. Diagnostic modalities that are currently available are discussed, with accompanying deep analysis of the potential results. Within each chapter, clinical scenarios, testing/treatment options and a review of the literature for each option are included. Chapters will also focus on how to collaborate between specialties and develop a complex GI motility center, as well as the effect of common prior procedures on subsequent physiologic findings. No comprehensive resource currently exists that discusses the physiologic evaluation of foregut diseases, and none present an algorithmic approach to the management of these scenarios. This unique manual addresses and provides guidance to the approach, geared towards both gastroenterologists and surgeons.
This encyclopedia volume covers the complete field of gynecologic pathology - from Abnormal Villous Lesions to WHO Classification of Tumors of the Vulva. This book focuses on a new clinical algorithmic approach to acute patient care based on the combination of electrocardiography (ECG) and echocardiography performance and interpretation, now renamed: ECG-sonography or electrosonography. The combination of these two basic skills improves patient management by healthcare providers in the acute setting. ECG is one of the oldest diagnostic tools in evaluating patients with cardiovascular symptoms and multiple and complex criteria for its interpretation have been developed over the past decades. The use of point of care ultrasound based on handheld echocardiography has recently emerged as an important clinical tool, particularly in the emergency department (ED) and intensive care unit. These studies are mainly performed by non-cardiologists including intensivists and ED physicians in addition to the physical exam and standard diagnostic tests such as the chest X-ray and laboratory tests to evaluate patients quickly and efficiently.Cardiac Electrosonography provides a new algorithmic approach to ECG interpretation and a simple tutorial of echocardiography performance and interpretation with a major focus on handheld echocardiography. It includes representative cases of patients presenting to the ED with a specific, acute cardiovascular symptom and demonstrates appropriate use of both ECG and echocardiography to improve patient management and outcome. It therefore represents an essential guide to this hybrid procedure for all practicing and trainee cardiologists and all healthcare professionals who manage these patients.

This volume is about the most mind-boggling sacrament of the Christian faith, also referred to as the Sacrament of the Altar, the Eucharist: in its Roman Catholic interpretation, the conversion of the substance of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ for Holy Communion. The challenge of providing a rational interpretation of this doctrine of faith proved to be one of the most contentious issues in the Western history of ideas, apparently going against self-evident metaphysical principles (requiring accidents existing without a substance, and a body in several places at the same time, etc.), and dividing schools of thought, indeed, eventually, warring religious factions. The volume addresses both the metaphysical, theoretical issues involved in this challenge and the historical, theological developments of how meeting this challenge played out first in the schools and even later in religious schisms, leading to the paradigmatic shift from medieval to modern forms of thought. The essays of the volume derive from the lectures of an eponymous international conference held in Budapest, Hungary, which was also the occasion of founding the Society for the History of European Ideas (SEHI); accordingly, the book is the first volume of the annual Proceedings of the SEHI. This book is aimed just as much at laymen and religious scholars seeking a better understanding of their faith as at anyone seeking this understanding with a non-religious attitude.
This book is the culmination of the authors' industry-academic collaboration in the past several years. The investigation is largely motivated by bank balance sheet management problems. The main difference between a bank balance sheet management problem and a typical portfolio optimization problem is that the former involves multiple risks. The related theoretical investigation leads to a significant extension of the scope of portfolio theories. The book combines practitioners' perspectives and mathematical rigor. For example, to guide the bank managers to trade off different Pareto efficient points, the topological structure of the Pareto efficient set is carefully analyzed. Moreover, on top of computing solutions, the authors focus the investigation on the qualitative properties of those solutions and their financial meanings. These relations, such as the role of duality, are most useful in helping bank managers to communicate their decisions to the different stakeholders. Finally, bank balance sheet management problems of varying levels of complexity are discussed to illustrate how to apply the central mathematical results. Although the primary motivation and application examples in this book are focused in the area of bank balance sheet management problems, the range of applications of the general portfolio theory is much wider. As a matter of fact, most financial problems involve multiple types of risks. Thus, the book is a good reference for financial practitioners in general and students who are interested in financial applications. This book can also serve as a nice example of a case study for applied mathematicians who are interested in engaging in industry-academic collaboration.
Foreign policy is one of the most complex policies of every state, and Portugal and Iceland are no exception. The "Small States and Big Powers: Portugal and Iceland's Foreign Relations" book analyses the importance of relations with big powers or regional and international organisations from a shelter theory perspective, detailing the degree of political, economic and societal shelter that they have provided to Portugal and to Iceland over time. Despite having followed distinct paths, Portugal and Iceland have some important similarities in their foreign policy, namely in relation to the European and the Atlantic dimensions and their participation in regional organisations. The book examines their decisions to join or not to join regional organisations, and both countries' bilateral relations with other important parts of the world, namely Africa, the Nordic states and China. This book compares the foreign policies of Portugal and Iceland considering their commonly identified status as small states and place them within the shelter theory framework, and its findings indicate that both countries need to balance their international relations with shelter provided by different actors. Their size and political and economic capabilities matter in their bilateral and multilateral relations. It is therefore in both countries' interest to maintain strong cooperation not only with big powers, but also regional and international organisations, depending on their field of action, in order to flourish politically, economically and socially.

This book covers Husserl's stance on the philosopher and the history of philosophy, whether or not such a history is part of the philosophical attitude itself, and if so, how Husserl's phenomenology might weigh in on such matters. Firstly, this text spells out some of the manifold ways in which the history of philosophy works its way in Husserl's phenomenology, showing how concepts, methods and problems drawn from various Ancient and Modern philosophical traditions (Platonism, Aristotelianism, Sophistry, Stoicism, Scholasticism, Modern Rationalism) are transformed and embedded within transcendental phenomenology itself. Secondly, it shows how a better understanding of the distinctive patterns by means of which Husserl's phenomenology confronts the history of philosophy could be extremely significant for historians of philosophy who are interested in learning something entirely new about the unexplored horizons of such concepts, methods and problems. Finally, based on such twofold historical and philosophical approach and thanks to a substantial reinterpretation of some key phenomenological concepts such as "multiplicity", "constitution", "attitude" and "variation", this book provides a novel and original reading of Husserl's overall philosophical project in its full meaning and scope. By doing so, this volume appeals to both students and researchers and critically engages in mainstream interpretations of phenomenology, suggesting a unique take on the idea of transcendental phenomenology as a whole.
