Zwar konnte sich das Rezensionsorgan, das Beiträge aller Fakultäten und Wissenschaftszweige v- öffentlichte, in den Wirrnissen der Zeit nicht durchgängig behaupten; aber es entwickelte immer wieder die Kraft, sich aus sich selbst zu erneuern. Begründet wurden die Heidelberger Jahrbücher, die im Herbst 1807 kon- piert und von Januar 1808 an unter dem Titel Heidelbergische Jahrbücher der Literatur publiziert wurden, mit dem Anspruch, der reformierten Universität ein kritisches Organ für den gesamten Bereich der Wissenschaften zu geben. Karl Friedrich, der badische Landesherr und ,Rector Magni?centissimus¿ der Universität, hatte den Ehrgeiz, seiner Akademie ein Sprachrohr zu schenken, das mit den wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften der bedeutendsten Universitäten konkurrieren konnte. Die Jenaer und die Hallesche Literaturzeitung sowie die Göttingischen Gelehrten Anzeigen sollten nicht nur als Vorbild dienen, s- dern übertroffen werden. ¿Um dem Zweck [der Jahrbücher]vollkommenzu entsprechen¿, so hieß es in dem ¿Plan¿ für die Mitarbeiter, ¿muss jeder Rez- sent den Standpunkt vor Augen haben, auf welchem die Wissenschaft steht, in welche die vorliegende Schrift eingreift.
