This book covers the intersections between neurointervention and neurology, neurointervention and neurosurgery, and neurointervention and other specialties. It fills the gap in the literature by placing specific emphasis on appropriate patient selection, preparation, and post-procedural management. Concise and comprehensive, this text covers the increasingly important aspects of the neurointerventionalist profession, as it has moved away from a purely technical role to a focus on clinical care. In addition, the most rapidly expanding area of neurointervention, ischemic stroke, is thoroughly examined in this text, where other texts on this subject fail. It is also meant as a reference for non-neurointerventionalists who may desire to learn more about how their patients can benefit from the therapeutic or adjunctive techniques that the neurointerventionalist can provide. Neurointervention in the Medical Specialties, Second Edition is an essential guide written for neurointerventional specialists from all backgrounds, both in practice and in training
This book explores the relationship between socialist psychiatry and political ideology during the Cold War, tracing Yugoslav ¿psy¿ sciences as they experienced multiple internationalisations and globalisations in the post-WWII period. These unique transnational connections ¿ with West, East and South ¿ remain at the centre of this book. The author argues that the ¿psy¿ disciplines provide a window onto the complications of Cold War internationalism, offering an opportunity to re-think postwar Europe's internal dynamics. She tells an alternative, pan-European narrative of the post-1945 period, demonstrating that, in the Cold War, there existed sites of collaboration and vigorous exchange between the two ideologically opposed camps, and places like Yugoslavia provided a meeting point, where ideas, frameworks and professional and cultural networks from both sides of the Iron Curtain could overlap and transform each other. Moreover, the book offers the first analysis of East European psychiatrists¿ contacts with and contributions to the decolonizing world, exploring their participation in broader political discussions about decolonization, anti-imperialism and non-alignment.The Yugoslav brand of East-West psychoanalysis and psychotherapy bred a truly unique intellectual framework, which enabled psychiatrists to think through a set of political and ideological dilemmas regarding the relationship between individuals and social structures. This book offers a thorough reinterpretation of the notion of ¿communist psychiatry¿ as a tool used solely for political oppression, and instead emphasises the political interventions of East European psychiatry and psychoanalysis. This monograph has partly been funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union¿s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (ERC Starting Grant DECOLMAD 851871).
This book analyses the emergence of the Indian Ocean as security complex and a strategic space of central importance and also looks at its prospective future. As well as US-China rivalry, the India-China rivalry is now the defining factor in the Indian Ocean ¿ irrespective of the strategic asymmetry. This new situation has opened a space for middle-powers, old and new, to intervene. The authors argue that this situation may turn into an additional source of instability and that the creation of an inclusive and comprehensive regional security architecture, as well as the strengthening of regional multilateralism, should be the priority of all stakeholders in the coming decade.
This book shows how regional cooperation and integration have increased massively in scale and scope in recent years, as developing countries seek new ways to shield themselves from economic turbulence and to kick-start their economies in the face of stagnant global demand. The trend is partly a defense mechanism against the limitations of the international financial system, but also reflects a wider search for new and different growth paths more appropriate with developing countries¿ increasing economic and political voice. As a consequence, the landscape of financial and monetary mechanisms has changed dramatically, especially in the ten years since the economic crisis of 2007¿2008.
The Urban Fantastic in Nineteenth-Century European Literature explores transnational perspectives of modern city life in Europe by engaging with the fantastic tropes and metaphors used by writers of short fiction. Focusing on the literary city and literary representations of urban experience throughout the nineteenth century, the works discussed incorporate supernatural occurrences in a European city and the supernatural of these stories stems from and belongs to the city. The argument is structured around three primary themes. ¿Architectures¿, ¿Encounters¿ and ¿Rhythms¿ make reference to three axes of city life: material space, human encounters, and movement. This thematic approach highlights cultural continuities and thus supports the use of the label of ¿urban fantastic¿ within and across the European traditions studied here.

This book explores ideas of masculinity in the maritime world in the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. During this time commerce, politics and technology supported male privilege, while simultaneously creating the polite, consumerist and sedentary lifestyles that were perceived as damaging the minds and bodies of men. This volume explores this paradox through the figure of the sailor, a working-class man whose representation fulfilled numerous political and social ends in this period. It begins with the enduring image of romantic, heroic veterans of the Napeolonic wars, takes the reader through the challenges to masculinities created by encounters with other races and ethnicities, and with technological change, shifting geopolitical and cultural contexts, and ends with the fragile portrayal of masculinity in the imagined Nelson. In doing so, this edited collection shows that maritime masculinities (ideals, representations and the seamen themselves) were highly visible and volatile sites for negotiating the tensions of masculinities with civilisation, race, technology, patriotism, citizenship, and respectability during the long nineteenth century.
This book describes theory and techniques of empathic communication, normalization and de-escalation procedures for the management of aggressive or violent patients in clinical critical settings'. Consisting of 9 chapters, it discusses in detail the self-regulation of empathy in potential dangerous interactions, as well as common mistakes and nonprofessional reactions. It also explores the basic concept of neurobiology of violence and aggression behaviour, such as brain circuitry and neuromodulators, and other rapid tranquillization guidelines. The final chapter focuses on the crucial topics of post-aggression debriefing.Based on the clinical experience of the editors and authors, who work in emergency psychiatry settings, the book offers practical key expressions to promote a normalization talk, to calm agitated individuals, and to prevent crises both for psychiatric patients and people without mental disorders. It is a useful tool to help readers gain confidence as mediators in critical circumstances and will be of interest for a wide range of practitioners in healthcare settings, from psychiatrists and psychologists, to nurses and other healthcare workers.
This textbook introduces readers to basic scientific principles of climate change. Based on extensive empirical evidence, it explains weather events that indicate climate change¿s evolution and presents important topics connected to climate change, such as political controversies, climate policy, as well as Native American perspectives. Finally, it presents attempted solutions, including policy recommendations and technological proposals for necessary changes in our world.Providing a well-written and easy-to-follow overview of knowledge of science-based geophysical facts, including thermodynamics, the book puts a strong emphasis on why expeditious action on global warming is urgent. The book also explains why smart greenhouse-gas reduction strategies will ignite economic growth, generate new domestic jobs, protect public health, and strengthen energy security. Not assuming a scientific background on the part of the reader, Global Warming and the Climate Crisis: Science, Spirit, and Solutions offers an ideal supplemental reading in many types of courses in Earth sciences, climate policy, climate change sciences, as well as politics of climate change, from high school through undergraduate. General readers also will benefit from its treatment of this very important and timely issue.
This book contains an abundance of numerical analyses based on significant data sets, illustrating the close affiliation between transport systems development and quality of life. How to ensure accessibility standards for public transport for people with special needs? Which multi-criteria methods can support the problem of vehicle selection in freight transport, and which ones should be taken into account in the case of problems related to regional rail transport? Hydrogen technologies are key for achieving a carbon-neutral economy; these offer solutions for the further expansion of renewable energy supplies, climate-neutral industry processes and sustainable mobility. For Germany and Europe alike, they present an opportunity to maintain industrial value creation, expand export opportunities and secure technological sovereignty. In this book, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft presents the knowledge and experience it has acquired along the entire value chain of the hydrogen economy. This encompasses materials and system development, production, system upscaling, energy sector applications, emission-intensive industry processes and mobility, as well as the practical, overarching issues of safety, standardization and service life.
The theory relating algebraic curves and Riemann surfaces exhibits the unity of mathematics: topology, complex analysis, algebra and geometry all interact in a deep way. This textbook offers an elementary introduction to this beautiful theory for an undergraduate audience. At the heart of the subject is the theory of elliptic functions and elliptic curves. A complex torus (or ¿donut¿) is both an abelian group and a Riemann surface. It is obtained by identifying points on the complex plane. At the same time, it can be viewed as a complex algebraic curve, with addition of points given by a geometric ¿chord-and-tangent¿ method. This book carefully develops all of the tools necessary to make sense of this isomorphism. The exposition is kept as elementary as possible and frequently draws on familiar notions in calculus and algebra to motivate new concepts. Based on a capstone course given to senior undergraduates, this book is intended as a textbook for courses at this level and includes a large number of class-tested exercises. The prerequisites for using the book are familiarity with abstract algebra, calculus and analysis, as covered in standard undergraduate courses.
This book chronicles the way Keynes¿s generous philosophy of practice evolved in consonance with the needs of his epoch. From a youngster reflecting on ethics and the classics, to becoming a leading voice in both wars in terms of political philosophy and international relations, to playing the role of innovator in both probability and economics, to taking a stance as an art appreciator, Keynes¿s life and multidisciplinary contributions to humankind were permeated by his philosophical milieu. However, only a flexible, dynamic, and broad philosophy could have reflected and led the economic and political events in the world of the first part of the 20th Century, which is what Keynes managed to accomplish, and that is what the book suggests. This book captures the gist of Keynes¿ evolutionary philosophy for our times. The book adds an evolutionary perspective to the existing literature on Keynes. As a case in point, the theoretical foundations of both macroeconomics and laissez faire are dissected. But the book also tells the story of how Keynes¿s philosophy is adapted to a convulsed world, which is akin to ours, his legacy being gifted with multiple human considerations. The book offers an outline of Keynes¿s philosophical stance¿also compared with those of other European thinkers¿at a moment when new ethical, epistemological, economic, and political perspectives are required, especially after the crisis of 2020. The conclusion is that Keynes¿s theoretical and practical insights were far ahead of his time.
This book provides an in-depth ethical analysis of the right to health care by contrasting privatized with socialized approaches. It pays special attention to how a socialized approach can be implemented in the context of limited resources and offers a way of integrating allocation decisions at the policy level with institutional and hands-on decision-making. It also discusses how the right to health care translates into duties on part of the members of society. In an Appendix, it suggests how, in time of need, the TRIPS Agreement allows countries to side-step patent regulations that would otherwise raise the cost of patented healthcare products beyond what a particular society is able to afford. The book is of interest not only to scholars but also to healthcare policy makers, administrators and healthcare professionals, as well as to patients themselves.
