Lavishly illustrated with rare photos and diagrams, this book describes in unprecedented detail the history, weapons, equipment, tactics, and uniforms of all the flamethrower troops fielded by both sides during World War I, and is the only book in any language devoted entirely to the topic. The book draws on primary sources such as classified flamethrower manuals, unit diaries, military correspondence, and personal memoirs, with much of the material previously unpublished. For the first time in English the flame-warfare efforts of Russia and Bulgaria are presented. Select flamethrower attacks are documented, as well as complete technical data on weaponry including weight, range, duration, pressure, capacity, oil mixtures, and color schemes. Also described are all known models of flamethrower used by the combatants. Additional weapons such as incendiary grenades, fire tubes, oil projectors, and side arms are also featured.
This new book is the definitive reference on this little known subject. Starting with the first German uses of military armored trains in the early 1900s, the book continues through the World War I and Reichswehr periods, to World War II, the main focus of the book. Detailed design, construction, and technical aspects are discussed, as well as analysis of armored train operations on all war fronts that saw them used: Poland, France, the Balkans, Italy, and their extensive use on the Russian Front. Also covered are the use of captured trains, noted personnel, and a history of each train unit.
This book is the first ever illustrated study devoted exclusively to the famous Mercedes 770K parade car used by Hitler during most of the 1930s, and into the 1940s, both in peace and war. Culled from the rich photo archives of Daimler-Benz and the Hermann Goring, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Heinrich Hoffmann, and Eva Braun Hitler albums on deposit in the U.S. this study depicts the 770K in fascinating images and detailed text. Volume 1 in this series covered the Mercedes-Benz G-4 cross-country touring car also used by Hitler and other top Nazi leaders.
Gliders formed a special category of aircraft within the Luftwaffe. While other aircraft types were used for many years, as a rule gliders were conceived for short service lives, in some cases just a single mission. The purpose of the glider, most of which were built using the simplest materials, was to deposit soldiers and materiel behind enemy lines undetected. In this book the various types used by the Luftwaffe in World War II, and their development are described in detail from military gliders for a few soldiers to large-capacity gliders capable of transporting tanks.
Watsons Whizzers is the complex story of the meticulously planned and executed disarmament of the Luftwaffe after its defeat in the spring of 1945, and the retrieval and transfer to the United States of Germanys advanced aeronautical technology and world-class scientists. Technology so superior that it would in short measure change the look of United States air forces. Although General Spaatz in May 1945 had under his command 17,000 planes of all kinds, the largest air armada ever assembled, they were of little future use. The future was about swept wing aircraft flying at supersonic speeds, or close to it: the incomparable Boeing B-47 jet bomber and its successor the eight jet B-52; the North American F-86 fighter and its supersonic successor the F-100 Supersaber were the immediate results of the German technology transfer and secured Americas future in the darkest days of the Cold War.
This book is a unique personal account of the war on the Russian Front, written using the diaries and photos of Erich Hager who served in the 39th Panzer Regiment, 17th Panzer Division throughout the war in Russia. Hager rose to the rank of Unteroffizier and served as a company commanders tank radio operator. During this time he kept diaries in which he recorded the events he went through every day at the front. His diaries have been translated and are presented with additional notes. Hager also took many personal photographs of comrades, and vehicles many are included here. The book also includes a chapter on the 17th Panzer Division. Despite taking part in many in many battles on the Russian Front, including the attempted relief effort at Stalingrad, little information on the 17th Panzer Division has been published. Hagers material provides a tremendous insight into the war on the Russian Front from a front line soldiers perspective.
