From the very earliest days of history there have been pirates, and it is, therefore, not at all remarkable that, in the early days of the history of this continent, sea-robbers should have made themselves prominent; but the buccaneers of America differed in many ways from those pirates with whom the history of the old world has made us acquainted. It was very seldom that an armed vessel set out from an European port for the express purpose of sea-robbery in American waters. At first nearly all the noted buccaneers were traders. But the circumstances which surrounded them in the new world made of them pirates whose evil deeds have never been surpassed in any part of the globe. These unusual circumstances and amazing temptations do not furnish an excuse for the exceptionally wicked careers of the early American pirates; but we are bound to remember these causes or we could not understand the records of the settlement of the West Indies. The buccaneers were fierce and reckless fellows who pursued their daring occupation because it was profitable, because they had learned to like it, and because it enabled them to wreak a certain amount of vengeance upon the common enemy. But we must not assume that they inaugurated the piratical conquests and warfare which existed so long upon our eastern seacoasts. Before the buccaneers began their careers, there had been great masters of piracy who had opened their schools in the Caribbean Sea; and in order that the condition of affairs in this country during parts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries may be clearly understood, we will consider some of the very earliest noted pirates of the West Indies. When we begin a judicial inquiry into the condition of our fellow-beings, we should try to be as courteous as we can, but we must be just; consequently a man's fame and position must not turn us aside, when we are acting as historical investigators.

The visit of her majesty's ship Dido to Borneo, and her services against the pirates, occupy comparatively so small a portion of this volume, that some excuse may be necessary for its leading title. It was only by undertaking to make the account of them part of the narrative, that I could prevail upon my friend Mr. Brooke to intrust me with his Journal for any public object; and when I looked at his novel and important position as a ruler in Borneo, and was aware how much of European curiosity was attached to it, I felt it impossible not to consent to an arrangement which should enable me to trace the remarkable career through which he had reached that elevation. I hope, therefore, to be considered as having conquered my own disinclination to be the relater of events in which I was concerned, in order to overcome the scruples which he entertained against being the author of the autobiographical sketch, embracing so singular a portion of his life, which I have extracted from the rough notes confided to me.That his diffidence in this respect was groundless will, I trust, be apparent from these pages, however indifferently I may have executed my unusual task, during a long homeward sea-voyage; and, from the growing interest which has arisen throughout the country for intelligence on the subject of Borneo and the adjacent archipelago, I venture also to indulge the belief that the general information will be deemed no unfit adjunct to the story of personal adventure.

In 1869 the late Richard Henry Dana, Jr., prepared a new edition of his "Two Years Before the Mast''. In presenting the first 'author's edition' to the public, he has been encouraged to add an account of a visit to the old scenes, made twenty-four years after, together with notices of the subsequent story and fate of the vessels, and of some of the persons with whom the reader is made acquainted. The popularity of this book has been so great and continued that it is now proposed to make an illustrated edition with new material.

I believe the old Italian proverb says, that every man, before he dies, should do three things: "Get a son, build a house, and write a book." Now, whether or not I am desirous, by beginning at the end, to end at the beginning of this quaint axiom, I leave the reader to conjecture. My book may afford amusement to him who will smile when I am glad, and sympathise with the impressions I have caught in other moods of mind; but I have little affinity of feeling, and less companionship with him who expects to see pictures of life coloured differently from those I have beheld. At three o'clock on the boisterous afternoon of the 1st of May, 1847, I left Greenwich with my friend Lord R----, in his yacht, to cruise round the coasts of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden; and, although the period of the year at which I quitted London was the one I most desired to remain in it, and join, as far as I was able, in the pomps and gaieties of Old Babylon, I did not like to miss this opportunity, offered under such favourable circumstances, of seeing countries so rarely visited by Englishmen, more particularly as the invitation had been pressed upon me so unaffectedly and kindly, that I could not, with any reason, decline it.

THE SECRET OF SUCCESSFUL RUNNING.Examination of privately-owned cars has demonstrated that while some drivers realise the necessity of periodical lubrication of all moving parts, others, who have not been trained as mechanics, content themselves by oiling the parts which come immediately under their eye, and ne-glect other parts, thus allowing the chassis to be injured, to become noisy and inefficient, and their masters to be put to unnecessary expense in repairs. An endeavour has been made in this book by means of copious illustrations, to enable the least experienced owner to satisfy himself if his driver is or is not giving the attention which is indispensible for the economical and satisfactory working of a chassis. First issued January, 1911 (reprinted June, 1920)

Die Erstveröffentlichung erfolgte im Jahre 1833 unter dem Titel ¿Narrative of a Voyage to Patagonia and Terra del Fuego in 1826 and 1827¿ e expeditions of H.M.S. ¿Beagle¿ and ¿Adventure¿ in 1826 and 1827 were primarily car-ried out to explore the usefulness of the Strait of Magellan for the merchant navy. Aiming at finding an alternative seaway to the perilous route around Cape Horn, it was clear that the Strait of Magellan with its strong currents, severe storms and numerous shallows was as dan-gerous for sailing vessels as the former. The swift and easily manoeuvrable Royal Navy ships conducted hazardous pioneer work.Luckily, the mate John MacDouall, with his accurate sense of observation, was on board, who delivered a lively and precise account of his adventures. Additionally, for his day and age MacDouall bore a special quality: sensitivity for social matters beyond the usual arrogance of the ruling classes. This aspect makes the book worth reading for sea dogs as well as all others who are interested in historical descriptions of that time. The book was first published in 1833 under the title ¿Narrative of a Voyage to Patagonia and Terra del Fuego in 1826 and 1827¿.
