  • - Stories of the Kennedy Canines
    av Margaret Reed
    213

Before that tragic day on November 22, 1963, the Kennedy years were filled with hope and promise. As the White House gardener put it, they were also filled with children and dogs. The Dogs of Camelot illuminates the inside story of the Kennedys¿ lifelong love of dogs and the unparalleled canine corps they brought to the White House. The American public only saw glimpses of the many Kennedy pets because of the zealous way Jackie Kennedy guarded her family¿s privacy. Through cooperation with the Kennedy Library, the authors have access to rare and previously unpublished photos and stories that present a fascinating angle about the Kennedys that is deeply revealing about their character and compassion.

  • - A Quirky Road Trip from Maine to Connecticut
    av Dan Tobyne
    185,-

Stretching from end to end of the thirteen original colonies, from Fort Kent, Maine, to Key West, Florida, the connecting sections of the Atlantic Coast Highway, known as United States Route No. 1, have formed a highway of history for three hundred years. Washington traveled it repeatedly in peace and war. Now the 94-mile section between New York and Philadelphia carries a heavier average traffic than any other road of equal length in the world. Route 1 connects New York, Princeton and Philadelphia, the three cities at which the capital was established in the early years of the Republic, with Washington, the final choice; and it passes near or through nearly all of the Revolutionary battlefields and many of those of the Civil War. It grew from blazed footpaths of the settlement era to its present condition, which the Bureau of Public Roads of the United States Department of Agriculture reports as surfaced for 84 percent of the distance, graded but unsurfaced for 15 percent, and unimproved for less than 1 percent. Work is proceeding on the less improved sections. The motorist traveling the road today is reminded frequently of the life and customs of the early days by the old towns and villages through which Route 1 passes; but they also cannot miss the unique places of interest--coffee shops, gift shops, restaurants, stores, museums, parks, and scenic turnouts--to be found along its whole length. A tour down Route 1 is a trip of history and nostalgia, as well as a slice across American culture, with all its quirks and eccentricities in full bloom.

  • - The Making of the Film Gone With the Wind

    260,-

One month after her novel Gone With the Wind was published, Margaret Mitchell sold the movie rights for fifty thousand dollars. Fearful of what the studio might do to her storyΓÇöΓÇ£I wouldnΓÇÖt put it beyond Hollywood to have . . . Scarlett seduce General Sherman,ΓÇ¥ she jokedΓÇöthe author washed her hands of involvement with the film. However, driven by a maternal interest in her literary firstborn and compelled by her Southern manners to answer every fan letter she received, Mitchell was unable to stay aloof for long.In this collection of her letters about the 1939 motion picture classic, readers have a front-row seat as the author watches the Dream Factory at work, learning the ins and outs of filmmaking and discovering the peculiarities of a movie-crazed public. Her ability to weave a story, so evident in Gone With the Wind, makes for delightful reading in her correspondence with a whoΓÇÖs who of Hollywood, from producer David O. Selznick, director George Cukor, and screenwriter Sidney Howard, to cast members Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland and Hattie McDaniel.Mitchell also wrote to thousands of othersΓÇöaspiring actresses eager to play Scarlett OΓÇÖHara; fellow Southerners hopeful of seeing their homes or their grandmotherΓÇÖs dress used in the film; rabid movie fans determined that their favorite star be cast; and creators of songs, dolls and Scarlett panties who were convinced the author was their ticket to fame and fortune. During the filmΓÇÖs production, she corrected erring journalists and the producerΓÇÖs over-the-top publicist who fed the gossip mills, accuracy be damned. Once the movie finished, she struggled to deal with friends and strangers alike who ΓÇ£fought and trampled little children and connived and broke the ties of lifelong friendshipΓÇ¥ to get tickets to the premiere. But through it all, she retained her sense of humor. Recounting an acquaintanceΓÇÖs denial of the rumor that the author herself was going to play Scarlett, Mitchell noted he ΓÇ£ungallantly stated that I was something like fifty years too old for the part.ΓÇ¥ After receiving numerous letters and phone calls from the studio about Belle WatlingΓÇÖs accent, the author related her father was ΓÇ£convulsed at the idea of someone telephoning from New York to discover how the madam of a Confederate bordello talked.ΓÇ¥ And in a chatty letter to Gable after the premiere, Mitchell coyly admitted being ΓÇ£feminine enough to be quite charmedΓÇ¥ by his statement to the press that she was ΓÇ£fascinating,ΓÇ¥ but added: ΓÇ£Even my best friends look at me in a speculative wayΓÇöprobably wondering what they overlooked that your sharp eyes saw!ΓÇ¥ As Gone With the Wind marks its seventy-fifth anniversary on the silver screen, these letters, edited by Mitchell historian John Wiley, Jr., offer a fresh look at the most popular motion picture of all time through the eyes of the woman who gave birth to Scarlett.
