'पूर्वरंग' 'ऐसे युग में जहाँ मान्यताएँ विवादग्रस्त और अनिश्चित हों, ऐन्द्रिय विषय ही निश्चित हैं और उन्हीं का यथातथ्य चित्रण सम्भव भी है। यही वजह है कि आज के अधिकांश किशोर तथा किशोर-मति कवि प्राकृतिक चित्रों की खोज में विकल हैं। झंझटों से बाहर निकलने का यह आसान तरीका है। समाज से कम झंझट प्रकृति में है और प्रकृति में भी इन्द्रियग्राह्य प्रभावों के चित्रण में सबसे कम झंझट है।'नामवर जी ने यह टिप्पणी 1957 में 'कवि' पत्रिका के 'विशिष्ट कवि' शीर्षक स्तम्भ में मुक्तिबोध से अन्य कवियों की तुलना करते हुए की थी। उल्लेखनीय है कि इस काल-खंड में उन्होंने श्री विष्णुचन्द्र शर्मा द्वारा सम्पादित पत्रिका 'कवि' के लिए 'कविमित्र' नाम से काफी समय तक एक स्तम्भ लिखा था जिसमें वे समकालीन कविता और कवियों पर संक्षिप्त टिप्पणियाँ करते थे। इस संकलन में उनमें से ज्यादातर को ले लिया गया है।पुस्तक में शामिल अन्य आलेख भी ज्यादातर पाँचवें दशक में लिखे गए थे जिनमें से कुछ प्रकाशित हैं और कुछ अप्रकाशित। ऐसे अधूरे आलेख भी यहाँ जुटाए गए हैं जो किसी कारण से पूरे नहीं लिखे जा सके और जिन्हें काशीनाथ जी ने अपने पास सहेजकर रखा था।कहना न होगा कि इस पुस्तक में उस दौर के नामवर जी से हमारा परिचय होगा जब वे अपनी स्थापनाओं को आकार दे रहे थे और जिन्हें हमने बाद में आई उनकी पुस्तकों में देखा।

जेंडरगत मानसिकता से ग्रस्त नागरिकों के निर्माण और पुनर्निर्माण में धर्म की भूमिका से संबंधित अध्ययन की ज़रूरत सिर्फ यह मान लेने के चलते ही नहीं है कि धर्म रोज़मर्रा के हमारे जीवन के संरचनात्मक ढाँचे में रची-बसी एक प्रभावशाली संस्था है, बल्कि अब यह ज़रूरत इसलिए और ज़्यादा है क्योंकि वर्तमान राजनीतिक संदर्भ में हमारी अस्मिताओं को लामबंद करने या मज़बूत बनाने में भी यह प्रभावी भूमिका निभा रहा है।यह संचयन दो भागों में विभाजित है। पहले भाग के अंतर्गत दस आलेखों का संकलन है जो भारत, पाकिस्तान और चीन से संबंधित हैं। इन आलेखों को तीन विषयवस्तुओं के तहत बाँटा गया है। पहली विषयवस्तु में शामिल तीन आलेख जाति और धर्म के बीच अंतर्संवाद और उसके जेंडरगत परिणामों के बारे में सैद्धांतिक चर्चा करते हैं। दूसरी विषयवस्तु में वे आलेख समाहित हैं जो भिन्न-भिन्न तरीकों से जेंडर का निर्माण करनेवाले सांस्थानिक मानकों और नियमों की श्रेष्ठता के आत्मसातीकरण की चर्चा करते हैं। तीसरी श्रेणी में उन लेखों को शामिल किया गया है जो सीधे तौर पर महिलाओं के आंदोलन से संबंधित हैं या जहाँ धर्म के साथ नारीवादी संबद्धता है। इस अंतर्संबंध की अभिव्यक्ति अस्मिता-विमर्श, कट्टरपंथी सामूहिकता या धार्मिक-राजनीतिक आंदोलनों के रूप में होती है।संचयन के दूसरे भाग में धार्मिक दृष्टि से महिलाओं के आचरण-संबंधी मानकों को निर्देशित करनेवाली हिंदी और उर्दू की एक-एक प्रचलित पुस्तक ('बहिश्ती जेवर' और 'नारी शिक्षा') के चुनिंदा हिस्सों को शामिल किया गया है। ये उपदेशात्मक पुस्तकें हिंदू और मुस्लिम महिलाओं के आचरण और व्यवहार से जुड़ी जेंडरगत परम्पराओं को मज़बूत करती हैं।आशा है, पाठकों के सहयोग से यह शुरुआत एक सफल अंजाम तक पहुँचेगी।
