The personal journals of one of postwar America's most influential photographers published for the first time One of the most significant unpublished texts in the history of photography, Memorable Fancies is the daybooks of Minor White, an artist who played a leading role in shaping the practice of photography in postwar America. Begun in the early 1930s and taking its name from a series of dialogues in William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, these writings are part diary, part photography manual, and part aesthetic treatise. Minor White: Memorable Fancies presents this work in its entirety for the first time, offering an intimate look at the ideas and interior life of one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century. In this beautifully illustrated volume, the art historian Todd Cronan sheds light on White's guiding concerns and the intersections between White's writings and his public practice as a photographer and influential publisher and teacher. White's journal is accompanied by an array of stunning photographs by White and his contemporaries as well as annotations that provide background and context, illuminating White's life and career while capturing a vibrant and inventive moment in the history of modern photography. Challenging our assumptions about photographic agency and the interplay between art and life, Minor White: Memorable Fancies engages deeply with the possibilities of photography, its effect on viewers, and its relationship to chance observation. Central Europe occupies a prominent place in many realms of eighteenth-century culture. This volume is the catalogue of an exhibition of drawings, organized in 1989 by The Art Museum, Princeton University, which presents some of the little-known accomplishments of artists from the region of present-day East and West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and parts of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. Providing the first available survey of drawings of the period in English, the illustrated introduction to the catalogue considers the works in historical and artistic context. The book includes important drawings by artists such as Cosmas Damian Asam, Egid Quirin Asam, Matthus Gnther, and Adrian Zingg. Published for the first time are unique drawings by such important sculptors as Georg Raphael Donner and Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. The fully illustrated catalogue contains 105 entries, many of which deal with major issues of art of the time and treat the drawings exhibited in relation to works elsewhere. Biographies are presented for all the artists exhibited.

From its foundation in 1888, The Art Museum, Princeton University, has amassed an impressive collection of ancient Greek sculpture, which, along with the museum's other collections of ancient art, has long played an integral role in the training of art historians and archaeologists. This book is a comprehensive catalog of The Art Museum's ancient Greek sculpture. Here a team of scholars headed by Brunilde Ridgway thoroughly documents each of the forty pieces that constitute this broad and diverse collection. The collection includes gravestones, votive reliefs, and portraits of poets, playwrights, and philosophers, as well as representations of gods and goddesses, satyrs, centaurs, nymphs, and sphinxes. The resulting catalog will be a valuable tool to anyone wishing to learn about the world of ancient Greece. The catalog covers both original works of Greek stone sculpture as well as Roman sculptures that copy or owe their inspiration to earlier Greek works. Photographs of each piece are accompanied by information on dating, provenance, material, dimensions, and condition and by a detailed description and an analysis placing the piece in its artistic and historical contexts.
