  • - The Dawn of Pagan Traditionalism
    av Askr Svarte

  • av Evgeny Nechkasov

An eventful century has passed since the writings, activities, and networks of René Guénon (1886-1951), Ananda Coomaraswamy (1877-1947), Julius Evola (1898-1974), and Frithjof Schuon (1907-1998) initiated what has come to be known as Traditionalism. Within recent decades, unprecedented attention has been drawn to Traditionalism and Traditionalists, both historical and contemporary, in nearly all possibly categorizable spheres: philosophy, religion, esotericism, politics, literature, art, academia, etc. The legacy of the intellectual current that began with Guénon in interwar France has been continually (re)discovered in diverse domains and forms around the world, and a growing literature has yielded various interpretations of the Traditionalist constellation of ideas, figures, works, influences, intersections, and polemics. In the 21st century, Traditionalists as well as scholars of Traditionalism find themselves at a crossroads of reflection on original, essential questions: What, who, and where is Traditionalism? What does Traditionalism mean? Is Traditionalism a phenomenon of the past, an understanding or misnomer of the present, or part of the future? What is the relationship between Traditionalism and the central notion from which it derives its name: Tradition? Passages: Studies in Traditionalism and Traditions is a hermeneutic agora for perspectives and studies on and in Traditionalism and Traditions.

"De Roeck's life experiences have been intertwined with some of the most fascinating - and also the most horrifying - historical events of the twentieth century...She has seen it all, first hand. Dr. De Roeck's memoir makes for absorbing reading." - David N. Gibbs, Professor of History, University of Arizona "De Roeck is a refugee from that great world that Americans are taught not to understand... her life is full of lessons worth sharing... Americans who never budge to put an end to their leaders' endless verbal hostility against Russia and preparations for more and more war should take the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of a woman who has truly been there." - Diana Johnstone, author of Circle in the Darkness: Memoir of a World Watcher Galina De Roeck was born in Bihä, Yugoslavia in 1938 to Russian émigré parents and grew up in Belgrade, Germany, Morocco, and Australia. She received her BA at Sydney University and her PhD in Comparative Literature at City University of New York. She has taught at St. Peter's College, Rutgers University, Michigan State University, and the University of Arizona. In addition to her work in the field of literary criticism, Galina De Roeck has lectured on international affairs in the United States and participated in and led peace delegations to Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. The Door in the Nightmare: From the Russian Revolution to Pax Americana is her tell-all of a life lived through war and peace.

  • - Between Ideas and Practice
    av Roman Shizhensky
    383,-

Since the late years of the USSR, a new religious movement has gained momentum in Russia which seeks to return to the ancient faith of the Slavic peoples and to revive the pagan traditions that once embraced vast expanses of Eurasia. The Rodnoverie or "Native Faith" movement has emerged as a constellation of diverse religio-spiritual, philosophical, socio-cultural, and political currents whose identities and dynamics have continued to draw attention within the religious landscape of the post-Soviet space. At the same time, the Slavic pagan revival has figured as part of a larger global trend of concerns with cultural identity in the twenty-first century. In this unprecedented collection of studies, translated into English for the first time, one of Russia's leading scholars of Slavic paganism, Dr. Roman Shizhensky, explores the macrocosms and microcosms of contemporary Slavic pagan ideas, figures, practices, and trends from a diverse array of perspectives. From theoretical deliberations on key terminology to comparative studies of doctrines and movements, from sociological portraits and direct interviews with pagan figures to analyses of symbols and art, Shizhensky presents a colorful palette of approaches to paganism in contemporary Russia and Europe.

A century ago, between the uneasy aftermath of the First World War and the chaos of the Russian Revolution, an elite group of Russian intellectuals announced the discovery of a new continent they called "Eurasia", a sprawling landmass wedged between Europe and Asia fated to upend mainstream Eurocentric narratives on history and civilization. The intellectual trend these diverse thinkers initiated came to be called "Eurasianism", a school of thought which quickly developed into a movement, unsettling geographical and ideological borders, pushing beyond divisions between East and West, and innovatively bridging science, aesthetics, and religion. As this current took shape throughout the 1920s-'30s, its thinkers engaged manifold fields such as geography and economics, theology and philosophy, linguistics and anthropology, to elaborate an original perspective on the history and identity of Russia, decipher the dilemmas posed by "global Europeanization", and trace new arcs in the ancient, modern, and future developments of cultural and geopolitical relations. Formerly a little-known curiosity of the fleeting interwar period, the first two decades of the twenty-first century have seen an explosion in the interest and relevance of Eurasianism in its classical and contemporary forms across diverse fields, from the pages of scholarship to the flash-points of geopolitics. While a growing number of scholars and analysts have increasingly emphasized the importance of understanding Eurasianism for deciphering current global trends, accessible translations of the Eurasianists in their own words have remained absent, until now. The Foundations of Eurasianism series presents the key works of classical and neo-Eurasianism for the first time in English translation. This first volume features texts by the Eurasian movement's founding authors from their inaugural 1921 manifesto, Exodus to the East: Premonitions and Fulfillments - The Affirmation of the Eurasians, as well as early programmatic works by the leading theoreticians of the original Eurasian movement, Prince Nikolai Trubetzkoy and Petr Savitsky.
