At the time of his death at the age of 46 from intestinal cancer, the horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was practically unknown. Nearly a century later, he has millions of readers, bestselling authors including Stephen King sing his praises, and fantasy filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro echo them. Lovecraft is now a recognised 'classic', a not infrequent destiny for writers whose genius only becomes apparent after their death. In this guide, we document the real worls places that were inspiration for his fictional towns Arkham, Innsmouth, Dunwich and Kingsport; his own residences and his restless wanderings along the Eastern seaboard. As some of his protagonists do, Lovecraft engaged in a kind of time travel, seeking out the remnants of the pre-Revolutionary War, colonial America that he felt was his true homeland.

Frida Kahlo's haunting art often explores two subjects: the first, her turbulent relationship with Communist muralist Diego Rivera; the second is her home country, Mexico. Aside from stints in the United States and Europe, she spent most of her life in the Blue House in Coyoacan, a leafy neighbourhood in the south of Mexico City. It was here she was born, learned to paint while recovering from a traumatic accident, lived on and off with Diego and died, aged just 47, leaving behind 200 works that weave together Surrealism, fantasy and folklore. In this guide we chart Kahlo's time in this vast metropolis, from childhood to death, taking in life-altering events such as a tram accident that left her bedridden for years, to her first glimpse of Diego. Through 35 entries, we gain insight into Kahlo's life and work and the inspiration she found in the city of her birth.

A guide to the home city of singer, songwriter and actor Serge Gainsbourg, from birth at L'Hôtel-Dieu de Paris in April 1928, to his final resting place at Cimitière du Montparnasse. Along the way, we note residences, bars, studios, nightclubs, along with many scenes of scandal, debauchery and great art. At the time of his death in 1991, Gainsbourg was perhaps best known outside France for the songs "Je t'aime... moi non plus" and "Bonnie And Clyde", and his marriage to Jane Birkin. His influence is perhaps greater now than at any time. Famous fans have done much to bring his work to a wider international audience, notably Air, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp and Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys. Since September 2023, his former home at 5 bis Rue de Verneuil, has been open to the public, along with a museum, bookstore-boutique and café-piano bar opposite, The Gasinsbarre.
