  • - The Struggle Against Decency
    av Marie Audemard
    357,-

«Bold and engaging, a well-researched look at how clothes can simultaneously reveal and conceal.» (Victoria Bateman, author of Naked Feminism: Breaking the Cult of Female Modesty) Do you sometimes look at yourself and think, «I can't wear this without a bra - my nipples are showing»? Have you ever heard someone tell you that «you can't go out like that», after looking you up and down? This book is a thought-provoking exploration of the double standards faced by women. Through personal stories and insightful analysis, it challenges Western societal norms and the pressure to conform. Delving into the complex interplay between femininity, bras and societal expectations, this empowering read invites individuals to redefine their understanding of what it means to be «decent» in a patriarchal society.

  • - African-Language Literature, Film and Creative Media in South Africa

    487,-

«This is a unique book which is multidisciplinary in the sense that it discusses a variety of genres which cut across film studies, literature and cartoons. The combination of emerging and renowned scholars' writing in one anthology makes it an interesting book to add to your collection. I commend the editors for the meticulous selection of the essays to include to this anthology.» (Professor Evangeline Bonisiwe Zungu, African Languages, University of the Witwatersrand) «If you are looking for a book that delves into South African literary issues in texts of various types, like films, novels and television programs, this is the book you are looking for. Each topic covered has been thoroughly and logically researched and presents comprehensive and balanced arguments. It will really broaden your understanding of literary devices that make South African literature and African literature so rich and meaningful. Though the book focuses on the analysis of different texts under discussion, one other aspect that makes each chapter an interesting read is the fact that before each detailed analysis, the authors provide you with a clear, interesting synopsis of the book or film being presented so that by the end of the read you have been taken through the story or film in its deepest and broadest form. Broadened Horizons is an academic text that caters for various literary interests - poetry, drama, films and creative media.» (Dr Choice D Mpanza, Senior Lecturer, English Studies, University of South Africa) This book discusses three types of creative output in South Africa that are often considered as independent of each other. One section explores traditional literary genres; another examines different South African films, focusing on different themes; and the final section discusses creative media, specifically cartoons. This collection of critical essays broadens the readers' knowledge and understanding of African-language literature by including literary analysis, film analysis and cartoon interpretation in one volume.

  • - Postcolonial Identity & Political Activism in Contemporary Ireland
    av Eamon Maher
    548,-

The purpose of the book is to explore and explicate the origins, evolution and mobilisation of anti-war activism in Ireland from the 1950s. The author applies postcolonial critical perspectives alongside social movement theory to define the multifaceted Irish approach to different international conflicts from the creation of the Irish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (1958) to the current war in Ukraine. Meticulously researched, the chapters develop an analysis of the anti-war activism in Ireland, be it at a local, national or supranational level, from political parties, trade unions and civil associations. The book casts light on the factors that structure the Irish domestication of the conflicts under study, be they historical and connected to senses of national identity in the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, or strategic, diplomatic and religious.

  • - Comparative Readings for Students of International A-Level English Literature
    av Abha Prakash
    548,-

«In "Post-2000 Poetry of Dissent," Dr Abha Prakash's student-focussed explication of poems proceeds comparatively, identifying ways in which pairs of poems from the A-level syllabus address thematically similar phenomena or ideas while the poems' uniquenesses are thus thrown into relief. Prakash's helpful elucidations particularly highlight questions of specific power relations or societal injustices the individual poets are scrutinizing and directly or indirectly critiquing. Her essays instructively model approaches to poems for students developing literary critical skills.» (Susan Gingell, PhD, Professor Emerita and Master Teacher, University of Saskatchewan) «The best 21st-century poets confront edgy and difficult topics that reflect the realities of our time. Abha Prakash's clear and accessible critiques offer readers a reliable and sensitive guide to the complex questions these poets raise, while also showing how poetic techniques shape each poem's unique form and expression.» (Anthony John Harding, Professor Emeritus, University of Saskatchewan) An insightful critique of contemporary award-winning poetry published between 2000 and 2011 by British poets, this resource text offers a critical appreciation of 28 poems that form part of the anthology, Poems of the Decade, which are studied by A level students in the UK and international centres each year. All the 28 poems express varying degrees of dissent, in theme, style, and techniques. They also offer interesting lines of discussion and debate in the AS English classroom. This is a book of original analytical perspectives by an experienced English Literature teacher who expertly identifies each poem's implicit and explicit context, as well as its unique response to our twenty-first century world.

This book provides a comparative study of the accounts of the relationship between essence and existence, which are provided by Sadra and Hegel respectively. Sadra is presented as having a project that is similar in scope to Hegel's own. The author argues that while Sadra shares with Hegel the latter's rejection of essence as the positive quality of a determinate being, Sadra's characterization of essence as the negative quality of a determinate (existent) is seen as too one-sided from Hegel's perspective. This book would be primarily useful for Hegel scholars, scholars of Islamic philosophy, and those who are engaged in comparative philosophy.

  • - The Press and Anglo-German Football Rivalry
    av Richard Holt
    548,-

Franz Beckenbauer once observed that, in England, «war correspondents get their say whenever their team plays us.» In Crossing the Line?, Christoph Wagner surveys German football rivalry in the second half of the twentieth century as it was played out on the pitch and in the press. The Second World War undoubtedly cast a long shadow, framing the way in which matches were previewed and reported. The contrasting fortunes of the British and West German economies and British anxieties regarding German unification also impacted on sports coverage. An intense Anglo-German international football rivalry was forged against this backdrop. Newspaper readers often turn to the back page first and first impressions are important. Press coverage helped to shape what the English thought of the Germans and what they thought of themselves. Crossing the Line? - which includes an important chapter on the German media - focuses largely on the part played by English newspapers in generating a simplistic sporting commentary heavily dependent on stereotypes before it overreached itself in the mid-1990s and the German popular press began to hit back. As English football pundits often remind their viewers: «You can never underestimate the Germans».

  • - Réception Créatrice de Proust En Italie
    av Hugues Azérad
    644,-

Poldowski (Irène Dean Paul née Wieniawska) 1879-1932 was the youngest daughter of the celebrated violinist/composer, Henryk Wieniawski. The only member of her family to follow her father into the music profession, she developed from a child prodigy into one of the most important and successful female composers in the United Kingdom. Like so many of her sister composers, her legacy has suffered the fate of neglect until a recent revival in interest. Poldowski's most successful composition genre is the solo art song, comprising mostly settings of texts by the French poet, Paul Verlaine. She displays an innate ability to realize the text within her own distinctive style with echoes of influence of her French counterparts, namely Fauré and Debussy. This book includes the most complete biography to date of this highly individual, colourful (and sometimes controversial) musician. A study of her relationship with the poetry of Verlaine precedes a discussion of each of the published songs, concentrating mainly on a description of the structure, the role of the piano and most importantly, a commentary on the musico-poetic relationship with details of reception/reaction where known. This book forms the second in the Performance Research Ireland series and is complemented by a free-to-view audio-visual demonstration, presented by the author. • - Genre, Form, and Style in the Film Musicals of John Carney
    av Eamon Maher
    548,-

This book focuses on the most successful feature films of John Carney, namely Once (2006), Begin Again (2013) and Sing Street (2016). Drawing on narrative, formalist and genre theories of film, the book presents an in-depth examination of how the formal and stylistic choices made by Carney allow each film to narrate a story in a coherent way. It shows how aural and visual contrivances are hidden behind a façade of realism, and how the films engage with universal, national and personal concerns and also how they relate to each other and to Irish and American film in general. It also explores the textual articulation of genre in each and the discrepancies between such articulation, the genre expectations set up by the promotional discourse coming from the publicity materials and events accompanying each release, and the genre labelling of each film in contemporary reviews by professional critics from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland.

  • - Visions of Alterity in Literature, Visual Culture, and New Media
    av Timothy Mathews
    644,-

«Alia Soliman's re-assessment of the motif of the doppelgänger moves it comprehensively into the twenty-first century and adds new dimensions to the figure. Here, through incisive readings, the double is brought to perspectives on ageing, the crisis of masculinity and, crucially, our digital condition. Soliman's book prompts vital questions about the literary, cultural and social work the double can do.» (Patrick ffrench, Professor of French, King's College London) «Alia Soliman's book focuses on aspects of the female double, the doppelgänger in Latin American literature, contemporary photography and in social media, making relevant contributions to scholarship. Considering the growing importance of the digital double and the implications of public image and self-perception, this publication presents an interesting link from the motif's literary past to its multi-mediated present.» (Gerald Bär, Professor of Literature and Cultural Studies, Universidade Aberta, Lisbon) «From the female double to digital doppelgänger trends, this book offers a topical investigation into issues pertaining to identity formation through the lens of the double. Emanating from the literary realm and into photography, film, and new media, the study reveals new and exciting engagements with the doppelgänger that span feminist, visual, and digital studies.» (Prof. Umberto Mondini, President, International Centre for Studies of Arts and Humanities, Rome) The book examines the doppelgänger persona's gradual shift to representations of the self as simulacrum and responds to changing conceptions of identity that celebrate the potentiality of alterity. Varied literary, visual, and digital narratives of the self showcase the doppelgänger as an increasingly image-based construction. The increasing visuality of the doppelgänger corpus engages with notions of exteriorisation, fragmentation, and the materialisation of unfulfilled possibilities, reflecting a sense of self that indulges in multiple realities and alternative lives. The literature of Jorge Luis Borges and Carlos Fuentes reveal the birth of multiple selfhoods that are rooted in temporality; Willem Hermans, José Saramago, and Denis Villeneuve put forth under-represented experiences of alienation and the remedial powers of the alter; contemporary photographic campaigns by Cornelia Hediger and François Brunelle and digital doppelgänger series such as «twin strangers» lead trends in visual culture and new media where the encounter between self and double is constructive, performative, and interactive. Delineating a structural change, the book proposes a paradigm shift that celebrates the female double, multiplicity, and visual and digital engagement and furnishes the reader with an expanded conception of the doppelgänger figure.

  • - A Companion
    av Simon Bacon
    366,-

What's in the Deep? This companion explores the myths and legends of merfolk and sea monsters to navigate our transcultural pasts and environmental presents and explain our endless fascination with the sea. More than any other time in human history, our relationship to the oceans and the creatures of the Deep has come into focus, not just as an environment to be explored, exploited and, more recently, poisoned, but as source of both our deepest anxieties and possible futures. In 31 original essays by experts in their respective fields, the Deep is brought to life, from representations of mythological sea creatures to present-day visions of the blue environment. As our place in the world and our effects upon it become increasingly contentious, The Deep offers ways in which we might re-experience and realign ourselves to the watery world that covers the majority of the earth's surface and become part of a shared, more ecological, future.

  • - Memory and Postmemory in North American Lithuanian Diaspora Literature
    av Andrea Hammel
    729,-

«Dr. Laima Vince Sruoginis, an established author, academic, and life-long part of the North American Lithuanian diaspora, courageously faces Lithuania's difficult historical legacy in her ground-breaking book. She researched her community's refugee ancestors, drawing both from personal interviews and dusty academic sources, confronting uncomfortable truths.» (Philip S. Shapiro, President, Remembering Litvaks, Inc.) As World War II ended, refugees fled Soviet-occupied Lithuania, finding shelter in the displaced persons camps of Europe. By 1949, most had emigrated to North America. They brought with them opposing narratives about the Nazi occupation (1941-1944) when 95 percent of Lithuania's Jewish community was annihilated. Trauma narratives were passed down to the second and third generations through collective memory. Through postmemory, cultural memory, and trauma theory, Vanished Lands analyzes literary works by North American Jewish and Lithuanian writers who speak over the silence of decades, seeking answers.
