The main purpose of this volume is to look into a wide spectrum of artistic ventures which provoke, challenge habitual thinking, and cross boundaries. The essays offer a truly interdisciplinary perspective and deal with creative acts of transgression from a broad range of fields: literature, theatre, visual art, film, and others.
Where Brahms and Bruckner really antipodes, as believed in the late 19th century or had their contemporaries overestimated the "dimension of their distance"? This book seeks an answer to this question. It is based on the principles of intermediality and on a method of semantic analysis, developed by the author and applied to numerous musical works.
This volume offers a wide range of interdisciplinary approaches to love, shame, grief, nostalgia and trauma. The 18 articles examine the representations of emotion in drama, poetry and prose - from the medieval Court of Love to Ali Smith's How to Be Both - as well as in life writing, music and the visual arts.
This anthology of texts on Polish socialist realist literature, written from the early 1980s to date, depicts a comprehensive picture of this literary phenomenon: from its holistic interpretations, analyses of the general poetics and specific literary and political texts, to descriptions of how institutions of literary life functioned in this era.
The grand narrative of capitalism continues at the beginning of the 21st century, though in a different (postmodern) key from its previous forms. In such circumstances, the New Leftist predilection for colourful peripheries - something it has unwittingly shared with postmodernism - must give way to a tendency for ethically responsible reflection.
The volume tests a flexible terminology that may serve to describe and analyze the notion of public sphere in state socialist dictatorships. A heterogeneous picture emerges from case studies on Soviet, East European and Chinese issues. A closer look makes clear that the public sphere in Soviet-type regimes cannot be understood as merely lacking most of the features associated with the Habermasian model. It is necessary to explore the meaning of public space in different social, political and national contexts to work out a comparative perspective. This perspective may constitute a framework for general conclusions about spheres of public action in Soviet-type societies.
This festschrift is cordially and respectfully dedicated to the linguist Winfried Boeder (University of Oldenburg, Germany) to honour him as a friend, colleague and teacher on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Winfried Boeder is not only one of the most distinguished scholars of Caucasian languages but he is also widely recognised for the great and continuing contribution he has made to the field of general and comparative linguistics. Accordingly, the present volume includes papers on three separate but related areas: philology (both from a linguistic and cultural point of view), language typology and language structure (including comparative studies). The 25 contributions are thus held together by the links they have with various aspects of Winfried Boeder¿s work. Georgian, a language for which he has a particular affection, is the topic of a large number of papers, both from a synchronic and diachronic point of view.
This encyclopedia is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the main philosophical, scientific (or empirical), and theological studies of mission in the 19th and 20th centuries. It deals with (1) the names, (2) the concepts, (3) the methods, and (4) the branches of missiology. Therefore, it concludes with four chapters after an introductory chapter. Since most branches of missiology only came into existence in the 19th century, most analyses, descriptions, and bibliographies do not go back beyond 1800. Both the philosophy of mission and the science of mission are dealt with in this first volume. The theology of mission, especially the missionary theology, is thoroughly discussed in the second volume.
The author examines Jean-Jacques Rousseaüs political thought from the angle of classical republicanism. To offer an account of Rousseaüs republicanism she explores his idea of the citizen and civic virtues. In addition, eighteenth-century conceptions of luxury and Rousseaüs ideas of the patriot and liberty are discussed. Rousseaüs republicanism is here considered to stem from his Genevan legacy and his ideas are seen as a critical response to the contemporary ascendancy of the Mandevillean idea of man, which emphasized the values and virtues attached to commerce.
The realization of the doctrine of Mary, as God¿s redemptive deeds in Christ in the multi-religious context of Africa is the subject matter of this book. The aim is to study Mary in the context of African society and Church through the process of inculturation. It employed the correlative method. Through this approach we understand Mary through the eyes of African culture and to grasp the African race through Mary. This is achieved through the application of the umbilical cord as a symbol of communication between humanity and maternity. The argument of the book is that in an afro-ecclesial community where communication is opened to Mary, She appears there in Her mystical image as the Mother of the human race, and draws them into the deepest mystery of God.
The twentieth century may be said to have been the century of ecumenism, a striving worldwide to realize church unity at different levels. It has frequently been asserted that one condition for reaching visible Church unity is that there should be basic agreement on baptism, eucharist and ministry. These three topics are dealt with in the Lima-document or BEM (1982). In the present study the sections of the latter that concern baptism are analyzed and also contextualized through a closer study of one of the responses to BEM, the official response of the Baptist Union of Sweden. This response gives a more traditional, closed Baptist opinion: baptism cannot be the basis of the church unity sought by BEM. The author shows here, however, that fundamental Baptist principles are being reconsidered, indicating considerable diversity within the Baptist Union concerning these questions. On the local level there are many ecumenical strivings, concretized in ecumenical congregations where different theologies and practices meet. This has opened up possibilities of church unity on the basis of both types of baptism (infant baptism and believers¿ baptism), and also membership on the basis of faith alone. By comparing official documents with public expressions of unofficial opinion, this study shows that the reality is more complex and ambiguous than is apparent in official documents. This book could be of interest because of its application of new methods to the study of »reception». To help an international readership, a historical presentation of the Baptist Union of Sweden introduces this study.
