This volume stands at the intersection of children's literature studies and translation studies. Borrowing from stylistics and sociology, it engages with a phenomenon which has reached its full scope over the 20th century and into the 21st century, that of the retranslation of books intended for children. Basing their essays on a body of texts including Perrault's tales, Alice in Wonderland, Jules Renard's Poil de Carotte, Tove Jansson's Moomins or Shrek!, the authors of this collection show that retranslation has contributed to the canonization of a number of national works beyond the English-speaking world (from Brazilian to Swedish literature). Retranslation thus addresses the changes in representation of the child-reader and adult/child relationship, the evolution of translational norms as regards orality and musicality in the case of texts that are often read aloud, the impact of cultural, economic and political contexts in countries where translations are in demand, and the way retranslation can even affect the relationship between the text and its illustrations.
The Hour That Breaks is the first biography of Gottfried Benn to appear in English. The author of this study charts in impressive detail the complex paths of Benn's life, through the demands of his medical practice and military involvement in two world wars, his brief political advocacy of Hitler and Nazism in 1933, to his final comeback in post Second World War Germany. The author also engages with Benn's extensive body of poetry which, inventive, challenging and formally wrought, was the product of mind that was both radical and conservative. The same propensity to invention and transformation also informed Benn's personal and professional life, giving rise to a practice of role-playing and dissimulation that the poet termed a double life. As Travers shows in this well-written and informative biography, this was a strategy of survival of which Benn, ultimately, was as much the victim as the master. This biography also offers fresh translations of many of Benn's poems, a number of which appear here in English for the first time.

This book discusses the Western journey of a contemporary Muslim movement initiated by Fethullah Gulen in Turkey in the 60s. Although its participants are a small and often less visible group among the Muslim minorities in Western countries, they are very active in social life. This study provides a broad presentation of a group of Turkish Muslims.

This volume is the product of a joint effort to bring together critical views "from the Old World" on the field of American Studies. All in all, this book provides the critical gaze of the "expert outsider" who is able to offer a somewhat different but complementary point of view, which can only enrich the general appreciation of American Studies.

Only in France is demography essentially the population science: it is taught at school, newspapers feature the evolution of fertility rates in their headlines and the subject sparks ideological debates in the media. How did demography become a national identity issue? The French exception is attributable to a political history that reached fulcrums during the Second World War under the racist Vichy regime and then after the Liberation, with the development of population policies and the creation of the French National Institute for Demographic Studies (INED). The book is the first to retrace its controversial genesis and analyze its ramifications for the following decades. It shows how theories, institutions and demographic policies developed simultaneously in France. Its reflection on the links between ideologies, science and the state offers a model that could be applied to the history of many other scientific disciplines.Paul-André Rosental¿s indispensable study examines the emergence of demography as an autonomous discipline and its association with the state in mid-twentieth-century France. Demography¿s success in the immediate post-war years came in part from its dual concern with both "science" and "action," which allowed policy makers to claim both knowledge and expertise in addressing social problems. Rosental¿s measured tone hides a provocative argument that should serve as both a model and a foil for others working in the history of the human sciences.Joshua Cole, University of Michigan.
Even though the democratic decline has been deemed a global phenomenon, the question of how it manifests itself in the postcommunist world and how it varies across different regions with divergent levels of democratic consolidation has not been sufficiently addressed yet. This book tries to fill the gap and examines the causes and nature of the deteriorating quality of democracy in Central Europe as well as the reversal or stagnation of democratization processes in Southeastern and Eastern Europe. The political elite plays a key role in initiating legislative changes that may lead to democratic backsliding. Its constant commitment to the rule of law and to the practice of selfrestraint in securing the independence of judiciary and the rights of political opposition appears hence indispensable for sustainable liberal democracy.
The book investigates the Romantics' fascination with the character of Richard III and explores his iconic centrality from the historical, the textual and the theatrical points of view. The multiplicity of Romantic-period Richards mirrored the age, as it was related to the cultural and ideological multiplicity of the Romantic era itself.
Using the Devil with Courtesy analyses Renaissance forms of (im)politeness through Shakespeare. Adopting a historical pragmatic perspective drawing in particular on Brown and Levinson (1987), Jucker (2010) and Culpeper (2011), the book focuses specifically on Hamlet (c. 1601) and The Taming of the Shrew (c. 1594).
The main objective of this book is to describe how educational initiatives are emerging that are hopeful in terms of strengthening democracy in a real way in a convulsive world like the current one.
This book reframes the debate around migration in the Mediterranean, and specifically around Lampedusa, by exploring how art forms - including works by Aida Silvestri, Bouchra Khalili, Isaac Julien, Maya Ramsay, Dagmawi Yimer and Broomberg & Chanarin - have become a platform for subverting the dominant narrative of migration.
Perhaps because of his stature and influence as a comic playwright, Goldoni has rarely been considered as an innovator in the musical sphere. This study aims to shed new light on his primary role in the evolution of Classical opera, and on the legacy of his innovations in the European musical tradition.
