Maria and her mother lived in an apartment in Brooklyn. Their world was turned upside down when Clara, Maria's mother, became involved with two Russian girls who needed help getting away from the Russkaya Mafiya. That meeting led to Clara's murder as well as the two girls she wanted to help. The FBI became involved and were curious about a locket one of the girl's had given Clara to keep safe for her. The locket began its mystical journey in St Petersburg, Russia in 1904 when the Czar's wife gave birth for the last time. The czar's daughter, Olga took a picture of her father and mother and the twin boys that were just born. She placed the picture in a locket. The czar and his wife gave one of the babies and the locket to Sofya to hide and care for until the threat from the Soviets was over. They knew their lives were in mortal danger. We follow the trail of the locket from Russia to Denmark; back to Russia and then The United States. Romance and mystery follow and lead to a fascinating tale.

190 Days (A Teacher's Tale) is a blend of educational fiction and mystery set in Stetsonville, New Hampshire. Emily Dow teaches English at Azihoosic River School where she struggles to meet the demands placed on educators: attending endless meetings, utilizing uncooperative technology, and, as her principal warns, stopping students from "conjugating" in the halls. However, trying to be a positive force in the lives of her students, particularly those from non-traditional homes, is often her first priority. This year Emily has another challenge to resolve as well. On Thanksgiving Emily's dysfunctional sister-in-law, nicknamed Baby Grapes, blunders onto the crime scene of her ex-husband's murder and is charged with the crime. She manipulates Emily into agreeing to conduct her own investigation of the murder. The police believe they have an ironclad case. Emily knows that Baby Grapes would not kill her twin daughters' father despite his many sins including child abuse, adultery, blackmail and failure to pay child support. Emily spends the year balancing the absurd situations in academia with playing amateur detective. Neither task is easy. The well being of children in both settings depends on her. With satire and humor Emily faces the educational bureaucracy of the school from the condom controversy to the prohibition of chocolate in the school. After a school shutdown, she deals with a teacher nightmare which has a giant dinosaur attacking the school. Educational issues permeate throughout this novel. How do teachers cope with parents who insist their child only read materials which they condone? How do teachers cope with high school students who are so handicapped they cannot read? What is a school's duty to deal with a student who has brought a hunting knife to school to kill another student? Emily shares with us characters and conversations which bring the Azihoosic River School to life with all of her humor and dedication to educating her students.

  • - A Story about a Woman Who Taught Me How to Breathe
av Yvette Rowlett & Al Rowlett
    141,-

A driver leaves the house in the morning. She travels in both the dark and the light, in the blistering heat and in the biting cold. She travels on many kinds of roads. Some may have pot holes. On others she may have to deal with detours. But she keeps driving on, no matter the climate, congestion or unexpected conditions. Finally, late in the day, she pulls into the driveway next to the house. A key is turned and the motor no longer hums. A button is pushed and the lights no longer shine. But the person driving gets out of the vehicle and goes into the house. And so she, the driver, Yvette T. Rowlett did start out in the morning of her life. She traveled in the darkness of the early day and the bright sunlight of early morning moments. She drove in the heat of the noonday sun and in the chilling cold of the evenings. Difficult roads were filled with some of life's heaviness. Re-construction and changing direction was ongoing as she encountered bottlenecks as a result of traffic lights that did not work. Yet, she chose to drive on, no matter where life led. On a Saturday in December, she turned into the driveway for the last time, a key was turned and her heart no longer beat. A door was opened and her spirit departs. She left the vehicle that had been her life and entered her new home. Most of us never want to think about death and dying. We want to live today and plan for tomorrow. She was no different. She planned for tomorrow and next week and even months from now, but she always tried to live knowing that if she was not here tomorrow, it was going to be okay. She had dreams and plans and desires. She wanted to support her husband in all that he did. She wanted to go to church. She wanted to be here to influence her children, grandchildren and other family members. She wanted to go to soccer games and dance recitals. She wanted to shop, eat out, swim, and read yet another good book. There was so much she wanted to do. She wanted to go to the continent of Africa

This is a true account of a medically documented healing miracle of a woman diagnosed with Stage IV (end stage) breast cancer that had metastasized into her bones, organs and lymph nodes. Given anywhere from three weeks to ninety days to live, through her faith, she was able to find healing without chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Years later, Shirley is still living free from all cancer and is totally restored. The promises I found in the Word of God are for all those who believe upon Jesus as their Lord - no matter what they have done in the past, whether they have served God all of their life or just cried out to Jesus to save them today. All provision for all our needs, including healing, is available to whosoever will dare to believe God. Impossibilities bow to the name of Jesus. "With God, nothing shall be impossible to them that believe," Mark 9:23. As I immersed myself in the scriptures, my faith grew to new levels; and as I took one step at a time, I soon walked out of the pit of despair into life and life more abundantly. Sometimes, I felt as if I was soaking in the promises, and I would listen to the scriptures and know I was more than an overcomer through Christ Jesus; yet the next days, I would find myself struggling to even quote them against the pain and weakness that I was feeling. It was often as if every promise I would grasp one day would be shaken so severely the next that I had to continue to hear the Word to stand in faith. "But, when you have done all to stand, stand, take a hold of the truth, continue in the Word of God and the truth will set you free" (Ephesians 6:13, John 8:32 compilation). I know and can now say with all my heart that all the promises of God in Christ are "Yes" and "Amen!" God is no respecter of persons; what He has done for me, He has made available for you! Only believe. I pray that as you read this book of my journey you will receive personal insight and reach out to take what has been made

PEOPLE OF GOD SPEAK UP! THE WORLD'S GONE CRAZY! As time marches on, people of faith have lost their voice and their way within this world, setting the stage for moral catastrophe. In People of God Speak Up! The World's Gone Crazy! The Next Generations Need Us!, Dr. James Snell presents a comprehensive look at family and cultural values in the light of faith and the world that denies this faith. He challenges current perspectives regarding God, faith, science, media, and humanity - and their effects upon our current relationships and upon future generations. Dr. Snell draws upon decades of experience in counseling to help couples learn more about themselves and their spouses, as he promotes the institution of marriage as the God-given, self-maturing, sacred relationship God intended marriage to be. Dr. Snell equally examines areas within our culture that demoralize humanity, question God's existence, and tear at the moral fabric of marriage and family life as we know it. The Next Generations Need Us! Our children have been negatively affected by divorce and other cultural factors that have changed their views on God, marriage, family, relationships, and the value of human life itself. We have a responsibility and duty to our children, and to our children's children, to leave them a significant and reliable society, one that is moral, values humanity, relationships, and God's authority and love. This book challenges, encourages, and teaches people of faith how and why we need to join forces for God and his ways within culture so that the next generations will be able to live in peace and worship God freely.

    av Prophet Yannick K Bopda

  • av Ramon F D'Elosua
    221

After his first book, --Disaster In The Gulf--, Ramon F. D'Elosua has written another exciting adventure story about his intrepid captain, Terry Jackson, or T.J. and his most of his friends and crew. There is love, adventure, and a few conflicts along the way that will keep you turning the pages. There is the usual humor intertwined with the drama that keeps things interesting. The crew becomes a close knit family, and are very supportive of each other. While helping out some friends that were caught up in super storm Sandy, T.J. finds out about a shipment of very valuable war surplus aircraft parts that were lost in a storm in 1948 on Lake Superior. These parts include 24 radial engines that are rated at 2,000 horsepower each, that were reported to be sealed in containers so the thought was that they could be in new condition. These engines in their protective cases, weigh around 3,500 pounds each, so bringing them up form the bottom of the lake is going to be quite a challenge in itself. After checking with a good friend who is into anything involving aviation, they think these engines could be worth over $100,000.00 each. Armed with only an old chart, a story from an old man, and an old boat, he feels that it is worth the risk to try to salvage the stuff. He purchases a 40 year old 98 foot military work vessel to use for the venture. T.J. counts on his friend Jack to renovate the fire damaged craft. Jack is up to the task, and soon has the refit complete. The crew has to contend with sudden storms, hidden ice, heavy fog, and a dangerous reef that has been claiming vessels ever since the first Indians in canoes got wrecked on it. The crew soon finds out why the words in the song say, --- when the waves turn the minutes into hours ---, are so true. The fun starts when they have to figure out how to find the lost cargo out on the stormy lake. They use home-made search gear to find the goods, and then have to salvage the stuff from the 400 foot deep frigid water. It is found that somebody beat them to part of the bounty, but there is still plenty left if they can find it all where it is scattered over the sandy bottom. There are greedy interlopers who think the guys have found a stash of gold, and diamonds. The bandits want a piece of it, and go to great lengths to get what they are after. All the risks pay off in the end, and the crew does very well. The find themselves looking forward to their next adventure where They have to deal with a big, mean bear that wants Andy for his lunch.

Mitch started his writing career with big dreams, but he's settled into an empty life of one-night stands, late nights at the bar, and failed ambitions. His latest assignment seems like a dead end: he's been assigned to Macbeth, a tight-knit island community off the coast of Massachusetts, where the quaint down-home values of Norman Rockwell and Mayberry still hold sway. But this little piece of paradise isn't immune to the modern world, and Mitch finds himself caught up in the unthinkable: Macbeth, lacking support from the mainland, yet not allowed to govern itself, secedes from Massachusetts. The consequences of this decision are far-reaching, as a small community shakes the foundation of the United States, facing a bloody battle they would never have chosen...and their spokesman becomes Mitch, the journalist who learns that he is not the man he thought he was, as he becomes more enmeshed in the life of the islanders, and discovers what love really is. A modern-day epic about the ways in which war impacts real people, The Island of Macbeth is a thought-provoking, inventive novel that will challenge and entertain you.

  • - Stories of the Aspen Practical Joke Years
    av Jack Brendlinger
    221

"Don't Get Mad...Get Even" is a hilarious compilation of stories, most of them about practical jokes Aspenites played on each other during the years between 1960 and 1980. In those years Aspen was a booming tourist town, buildings were cropping up everywhere like dandelions in the lawn. Fortune tellers were getting elected and passing no-growth density laws to stop the runaway boom. Behind this scene were the crazies who had the foresight to be an integral part of the excitement. They were driven by their passion for skiing but also needed to feed their bellies and entrepreneurs they became. Once their livelihood was assured they began to have some harmless practical joke fun, often at the expense of their friends. There are lots of wild stories like riding a motorcycle through your friend's new house on Halloween night, or filling a friend's borrowed rowboat full of 500 pounds of grape Jell-O. The characters in this book didn't get mad they just got even. This is a journey full of outlandish stories, each chapter a new tale, making this the perfect bathroom or bedside book.

  • - The Shift in Values, the Stages of Faith, and the Cultural and Religious Experiences of Jieeng Believers in the Episcopal Diocese of Bor
av Nathaniel Athian Deng Mayen Bsw Rev
    403,-

In Christian Faith among the Jieeng, Rev. Nathaniel Athian Deng Mayen provides an insider's perspective on the development of Christian faith among the Jieeng (Dinka). Based on his teaching and clergy experiences and observations, Rev. Athian discusses the stages of faith, the shift in values and beliefs, and the cultural and religious experiences of Jieeng believers in the Episcopal Diocese of Bor. The author maintains that the shift in Jieeng cultural values and the subsequent conversion to Christianity are a result of the believers' experiences and encounters with God. God mysteriously reveals Himself to the animist believers and wins their hearts through the miracles and significant life events. Thus, the miracles and significant events reveal the powerlessness of the animist deities (jak) whom the believers consequently abandon and embrace Christianity. Having no more cattle and grains to sacrifice and appease multiple communal jak, the believers abandon jak and give complete loyalty and trust to Nhialic (God) who requires no appeasement and sacrifices during such scarcity. Christian Faith among the Jieeng is an observatory, experiential and introductory discussion that opens up conversations about Jieeng spirituality in the context of Christian faith. The book draws attention to cultural teachings about social relationships, youth responsibilities, women's leadership, and the role of leaders in guiding the faith and behaviors of the believers. The author has elaborated that there were no, or limited, denominational conflicts and differences at the early stage of Christian faith among the Jieeng. The conflicts in the Church later resulted from leadership wrangles among the leaders, leading to increased defections to and from the Episcopal Church because of the development of theological and ideological differences over time and the targeting of some dissenting voices in the top Church leadership. These leadership and ideological conflicts reveal elitism, doctrinal, fundamentalism and celebritism stages of faith. The book also discusses the following questions. Is Christianity the existence of God or a colonial tool to disintegrate indigenous cultures and values among the Jieeng? Why is Christianity miraculously taking precedence over indigenous religions and animist worships? What happened after the Jieeng believers in the Episcopal Diocese of Bor preferably embraced Christianity and abandoned their animist deities and divinities?
