A Tapestry of Life is the true story of a woman who, in her quest to fulfill her dreams and have the family that she had always imagined, struggled with pain, disillusionment and heartbreak but came through it with an understanding of the rich beauty of life. Like many young girls growing up in the 1950's and 1960's, Daphne had dreams of growing up, getting married and having a family. She had well-organized plans for her future. She did not have any concept of the roadblocks that she would encounter or the challenges that she would have to meet as she journeyed toward this goal. Through a diagnosis of infertility and decisions about fertility treatments, to pursuit of adoption, to marrying and acquiring step children, to eventually achieving a pregnancy and then to gaining a daughter through an informal foster care situation she eventually created her eclectic family. Despite her dreams of having children who transitioned easily into adulthood, her children each seemed to have some struggle to overcome. The family faced challenges including developmental disabilities, cancer, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, anorexia, bi-polar disorder and teen pregnancy. Over the years Daphne learned a lot and grew stronger. This is a story about perseverance and finding peace in the unpredictable nature of this life. The author's faith matured through the challenges and struggles and became the foundation on which her family developed. She found that with faith she did not need all the answers and she did not need to know the future. She learned that the path is not always clear but we can still enjoy the journey.
On December 18, 2012, the FBI arrested six attorneys and twenty other individuals who engaged in the practice of political asylum law in the New York metropolitan area. All the arrestees were charged with a crime of conspiracy of defrauding the Federal government by helping the undocumented file political asylum applications with fake evidences. The arrest shocked the New York metropolitan area and shut down the New York immigration courts for one day. People wondered how and why could this happen and what was the underlying factors of this crime. This novel is trying to explain all these by characterizing part of the event through the life and law practice of one attorney, Ray Zheng, a Chinese immigrant. The stories of the character Ray Zheng of this novel set lights on the causes of the crime. The indictments for the arrests were very dry, but this novel is very juicy. The main character Ray Zheng was a college teacher in China. He came to the United States in 1991 when he was about thirty-seven. He did not know exactly why he had made the decision to come because he had built his castle in China already-he had climbed, from the bottom rung of the society as the son of a peasant, up to a college teacher. He knew he would face a new start. He might have been influenced some American writers, such as Thoreau and Emerson, to try his ambition with a dream to build his new castle in the United States like what he had done in China. He was arrogant and believed in his ability too much. At first, he struggled a little in this New World, but he later zigzagged his way into the service for the Chinese immigrants. During the course of such services, he was wayward a little. He then became an attorney. At first, he was careful about what he was doing, trying to confirm his conducts to the ethical rules of the legal profession. But, later on, he was walking on thin ice and he finally slipped...... Why couldn't he confirm himself to the law or to the ethica

After picking up Mary in South Carolina, Will decides to take a less traveled road instead of turning around and picking up I-40 in order to save time. Several miles later, Martha notices that they have left the main highway and are on a much smaller road and fears that they are lost. She voices her concern to her husband and asks him if he has taken a wrong turn. William pulls over to the side of the road, turns off the car, and asks Martha for the map. She fishes it out of the glove compartment, trying her best not to criticize him for the delay, and hands the map to him. Tracing his finger over the correct route, he realizes his mistake and tells his passengers that he just has to go back a few miles and then they will be able to get back on 15/501. He hands the map back to his wife and turns the key in the ignition. The car emits a clicking noise, William takes a deep breath and turns the key again. Now there is not even a clicking noise. William exits the car, goes around to the front and pulls up the hood. Not being a mechanic, William can''t find out what is wrong. Will returns to the car and asks Mary if she has a cell phone. William explains that he and Martha hadn''t as yet bought a cell phone because they were still trying to figure out the best prices, besides they have a land phone and hadn''t really seen the need to spend the extra money. (Martha grits her teeth and refrains from telling her husband that she had told him that they needed a cell phone for just such an emergency). Mary looks in her purse and after several minutes of searching, she realizes she must have left her phone on the kitchen counter. Martha, who is now upset, is unable to keep her words from becoming an accusation when asking William what they were supposed to do without transportation or a cell phone t

Funny Stories from the Bottomless Pit is a collection of short stories. The heroes of these stories are often homeless and usually mentally ill to one degree or another - bipolar, autistic, schizophrenic, delusional, and so on. We got it all. Oh, and alcoholics. We got alcoholics galore. The young ones are runaways. The older ones are unemployed or in the process of being fired or quitting. Almost all of them are suicidal. They bump into each other over the course of these ten stories, which took thirty years to write, try to cheer each other up. The first story, As Marbles Go, was written in 1986 after I dropped out of high school. It won a junior college prize and was published in their journal even though it was an ugly mess of spelling and grammar mistakes. It has since been revised, cleaned up. Excerpt from As Marble Go: "That realization created a tiny explosion inside his head, unlocking it, and his marbles spilled out onto the floor. Some of them bounced over to where all those cute girls in wool sweaters sat. They had never noticed Humberto as he ogled them from the back row and they still didn't, snobs to the end. Even as his mind machinery lay exposed at their feet, all they could manage was to be disgusted that a boy so inferior to them had had such a horrific accident so near them. What was his problem anyway? A few marbles kept dribbling and spinning and then hopped down the long trail of stairs, for what seemed like forever, and eventually rolled right in between the professor's polished shoes, amid gasps from the class. The professor glared at Humberto above his eye glasses and then aggressively kicked the marble, a small green one, off his stage. The entire class broke into laughter, embarrassing what was left of Humberto as he gathered his books and abruptly headed for the exit, slipping on several marbles along the way out, each fall invoking more laughter."
