  • - The Agony of Conflict, Disaster and Displacement
    av Janet Asiimwe
    213

When she is offered her first job as a Protection Officer with the Directorate of Refugees at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala, Janet cannot help but smile at the opportunity to build a career in humanitarian work. As a qualified lawyer, family and friends consider her career already made for only one thing - legal practice. But Janet had other ideas. Since law school, she harbored a secret desire to work with international development organizations rather than practice law. A particular focus on refugees beckoned. To Janet, protection of refugees' rights that are most often ignored seems the ideal job for her. As she takes up her job, she has no idea how much her legal training has prepared her for this work. Until she digs deep into her work does she find out the 'baggage' that comes with her seemingly easy work. Travel to respond to emergencies is not fun especially when done without much notice and often through difficult and dangerous terrain. Most often she is away from her family and stuck with strangers. Interaction with many frustrated and heartbroken refugees who share their horrific experiences as they flee their conflict ridden and war torn countries in search of help exposes her to a certain ugly side to life she could not imagine! With a feeling of anger at perpetrators of war and violence and the indifference and inaction of many to such situations, Janet starts pondering if she is in the right place and whether her efforts and those of the organizations she works for make any difference. Her work turns out not as simple as she thought it would be but rather traumatizing! Will Janet continue with humanitarian work or run right to court where many expect her to be? She soon realizes her legal training alone cannot help her cope or help her make a decision. In the end, Janet has to draw strength from other sources including her warm, compassionate and yet rebellious childhood.

  • - A window into the cultural achievements of Egypt during the Middle Kingdom
    av J Oliver Self
    367,-

The Middle Kingdom of Ancient Egypt represents one of the greatest artistic periods of a visually accomplished ancient civilisation, yet it is also one of the most overlooked. The remaining sculptural works of this age, in particular, reveal an unprecedented complexity and iconography. This book provides a comparative analysis of three seminal works from the period, drawing from existing research to bring insight into the principles of Egyptian figurative works, their historical context and the artistic legacy each work inspired. The author has selected a variety of beautiful images from great museum collections throughout the world as supporting exhibits to the vigorous examination of the three primary works. This book, although principally an academic treatise, should also appeal to art enthusiasts, history lovers and any interested Egyptophile.

Life decisions-how are they made? What influences result in good or bad decisions? And are we, as human beings, the sole intelligence behind decision making? Are we really alone in our day-to-day lives? Under God's Plan addresses these questions and more. This eloquent book follows one man's journey as he struggles to find salvation, chronicling the decisions, incidents, and influences-accepted or rejected-that ultimately changed his life's path. Like many of us, his life was driven by pride, greed, and other sins, but God's persistence created a spark that ultimately lit the fire of redemption and helped him find true peace. After a lifetime of searching, his answer was finally revealed. Read, reflect, and decide for yourself: Are we in full control of our salvation, or are we Under God's Plan?

Growing up as an African-American girl in Kentucky during the 1970s and 80s presented more than its share of social challenges - racial issues, getting educated in a small-town setting, and living in a loving family that struggled to make ends meet. From the moment I was born, my father already having left the house, my ordinary life has been full of extraordinary situations - all of which created a sense of life and compassion in me that prompted others to seek my advice, or help, or place as a peacemaker. That is, when I wasn't fighting to protect myself. Added to that were my two families that couldn't be more different: my loving mother and stepfather in a town of 400 in Kentucky; and a father who loved me, plus his wife who despised me, in Danville, IL. It all led to a difficult growing-up time, supported by my extended family in Kentucky. The backdrop was the late 1970s and 80s, when I went through school during a time when society was struggling to open up racially, and when everything from music to AIDS changed our views of the world. I lived it all, I watched a friend die of AIDS, and I came out of it with an understanding of life that serves me well in my profession. My Life As Traci captures the arc of my young life. It is simply written to bring readers into both the spirit of the time and to invite them into my life, but it pries open the hidden corners, which seemed to constantly surround me. Always hopeful, but never shy about detailing traumatic moments, the book brings out the way my inner world develop, first through faith in my parents, then in the faith of my friendships, and finally in the faith of my spiritual beliefs.

FBI investigators, A.J. Waters and Uley Barlow, must use all their skills to solve the murders and stop this killer before the next new moon appears and another ritualistic murder takes place.

This book will turn on a bright light as you see the book of Isaiah with Christ at its center. If you are a pastor, teacher, or preacher hundreds of diamonds await you to pick up and expound on them. To the young ministers of third world countries, this book was written specifically for you to open your eyes to the seed truths in Isaiah of Christ and their fulfillment in the New Testament. The greater knowledge you have of the Scriptures, the greater will you see in these snapshots. As the author, I assume your knowledge is wide in the Scriptures and have made the subjects quick and to the point, waiting only for your heart to expound on it for your hearers. You hold in your hand much of the results of my quest in searching for Christ in the Scriptures. His snapshots are in every book of the Bible waiting for you to behold his face. And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. (Luke 24:27)

He wasn't as big and burly as his ancestors, but when battle came to his door he reacted, and those actions protected the city. He was sure this was all a test. Now that the Goel had returned to Kodu, he was being tested to see if the Red Tree Foxes could once again be that companion. He wasn't going to fail his ancestors. As he worked his way south through the city, he came to a bathing pool. He saw his master bathe here after coming through the circle. He looked into the water and saw his reflection regarding him. There were some that thought he was a squirrel. He had reddish-brown fur that lay close to his body, a thick but pointy nose, black gloved feet and a bushy red tail ending with a white tip. He stood about a foot and a half tall. He was obviously not a squirrel. Yes, his ancestors were much more powerful than he was, but he would show them his spirit was just as strong. His name was Derthanal, the name of a protector.
