Frankilee Baxter is back! And she is as sassy and resolute as ever. In Still Marching On, Miss Baxter aspires to participate in the Civil Rights Movement, become editor of the Athena College newspaper, and marry Calvin Morris-and odds are, she''ll make her dreams come true with sheer force of personality. A witty young woman with nerve and verve, Frankilee is in no way the traditional Southern sorority girl, which brings disappointment and alarm to her family, as well as shock and dismay to Calvin''s parents. With humor and heart, this highly anticipated third novel by award-winning author Lynda Stephenson depicts the triumphs and the failures of a plucky girl determined not only to stand against the Southern customs she loathes but also to marry the man she loves. "Here is the story of the irrepressible Frankilee Baxter, who, while she may be a disappointment to the 1960s down-south establishment, will fight to the end for life and liberty, and all that she believes in. I loved it." -Carolyn Wall, author of Sweeping Up Glass and Playing with Matches

Herein is a collection of stories, fun and not-so. Together they cover three-quarters of a century of happy events, and sad, which cemented a man's life and character. Wild Bill's story covers a unique moment in California's history. Born in 1931, he was unaffected by the Great Depression and, also, too young to serve in World War II. As a kid, he had the freedom of space. At age 11, he and a friend bicycled from his home in the East Bay of San Francisco to Yosemite Valley on war restricted, wide-open roads. As a teen, without the population pressure of today, he was at liberty to race up the "notch" from the Yosemite Valley floor to Glacier Point, while his friends drove up the lengthy back way. They beat him there by only a minute or so. In business, Wild Bill excelled as a cattleman, almond rancher and partner in a white-water rafting company. While California laws still encouraged entrepreneurship with lower taxes and fewer restrictions, when they were unjust, Bill succeeded in his work to change them. Living in an area where Hispanic American farm workers were prevalent, he and his business partner of 50+ years founded and hosted the San Joaquin Valley Young Leaders Organization (YLO) for 25 years. This is a story of life in California without today's limitations, restrictions, and people pressure. All proceeds from this book go to the Bill and Barbara Canning Integrity Fund to support youth leadership programs in California.

  • - How the United States Government Has Supported and Committed Acts of Terrorism from the Cold War to Today
    av Craig Peterson
    249,-

When people think of terrorism today, they often think of radical Islamic groups committing atrocities against the populace. Although these are horrific events, governments are also capable of actions that equate to terrorism, and they usually have more resources available to do so. The United States has become an imperialistic force by bullying other countries and people and requiring submission to its policies. This book is extremely controversial, but it discusses topics that need to be addressed. If Americans want to keep their liberties and see their country viewed more positively in the world, a change of policies is required.

Jonathan Whittaker, Penmouth's vicar for the last twenty five years, knows his little church desperately needs a boost. Fund raisers like bake sales and talent shows no longer hold appeal. Most of his attendees are at an age where they are on restricted diets for one reason or another. Time has made their singing and dancing days an enhanced memory. The budget becomes more dismal each month and taxes will soon be due. Now, a peculiar cult has settled a short distance from the church. Worse yet, it seems to hold real appeal for some of the young people in the village, especially Jenny, who used to regularly show up for church on Sunday mornings. Jonathan knows he has to take action to bring her back into the fold. Believing he has prayed thoughtfully, he advises God of his intentions and heads off to do battle with the cult leader. Things do not go as planned! Dominic, of Caribbean heritage, is the new doctor in town. When his assistant unexpectedly quits, he hires Gemma knowing almost nothing about her. Both, adapting to the fabric of the village, find themselves pulled into the confusions facing the church. Readers will be entertained by the amusing efforts of diverse characters, young and old, as they attempt to find resolution on a variety of prickly issues.

A Review of Loving Me... I must begin by saying, that Loving Me is quite a difficult book to read and "enjoy." Don't misunderstand me, the writing, the artistry and the poetry in this book is beautiful. The lack of enjoyment came in the story that was being written. As I was reading this book, I had to keep reminding myself that this was not a work of fiction; sadly it is a true story. Vicki Watkins brings us along on her extremely transparent and painful life journey filled with deep pain, neglect, verbal and sexual abuse and heartbreak. It is this journey that makes this story a painful read. However, if you stay with Vicki, and read the entire book, you will come to appreciate and admire her honesty and the long and winding path that she has taken to arrive to the present. You will be introduced to people that came in to her life, like Ann, and her husband Jim that came to Vicki at just the right time, like Esther in the Old Testament, "for a time such as this." There are also people I would like to forget. Finally, as I read Vicki's story, I was reminded of God's incredible Love and Grace and the way in which He always has the last Word. The story Loving Me is an example of how this broken and fallen world labels people as rejects, no good and trash, but the great news, and it is evident in Vicki's life story, is that God recovers, rehabilitates and refines us and lovingly claims us as His Priceless Treasure! Isaiah 61:3 - "God will give a crown of beauty for ashes..." Loving Me is a long journey of pain and abuse, but it is also a story that needs to be read. You may find yourself in some of the pages, or even someone you know. You will have a greater idea of the impact that neglect, abuse and pain plays in someone's life. You will also discover the value in having great Counselors in your life like LifeWay Counseling and Sandy M. The other thing you will find is the Love of God in the midst of the long journey, while she was in search of pe

  • - A Study of Complementary Treatment
av Dr Terry J Martin Psyd Lcsw Dcsw
    249,-

Close your eyes, and journey home from trauma. This study examines the question of meditation as a complementary treatment for PTSD and Anxiety symptoms, and recommends the most effective type of meditation to reduce these symptoms. Furthermore, the study concludes that meditation is effective in treating Veterans, and other populations whom suffer from these symptoms, and it can have positive effects on them. There is a review and evaluation of recent empirical research concerning open, focused, and transcendent meditation to determine if they are helpful in treating these symptoms. Included in this study is a review to determine whether the effectiveness of different meditation techniques on stress outcomes is similar or varied. A rigorous systematic review of meditation showed that the practice of regular meditation, resulted in reducing negative effects of stress and anxiety across a wide variety of diverse populations. The evidence presented in the study is useful for clinicians and clients in making decision about the best available options for treating PTSD and Anxiety. Meditation can be defined as a family of practices that train attention and awareness, usually with the objective of fostering psychological and spiritual wellbeing and maturity. Meditation does this by training and bringing mental processes under greater voluntary control, and directing them in beneficial ways. This control is used to cultivate specific mental qualities such as concentration and calm, and emotions such as joy, love, and compassion. Through greater awareness, a clearer understanding of oneself and one's relationship to the world develops (Hofman, Grossman, & Hinton, 2011).
