In time, as a great variety of events happen (all of which have a basis in fact), Elizabeth gradually develops a malaise in which she seems to lose her focus and starts to malinger around water and silvery objects. Elizabeth knows she must bid good-bye to the Great Museum and return to the wilderness area of Minnesota. In Book 2, once back in Ely, Elisabeth reverts to the name Betsy, and becomes fanatically involved with fishing, canoeing and other outdoor activities. She becomes obsessed with catching a rare, almost mystical fish and asks many of her New York friends to come and accompany her on this quest. Meanwhile, many of the Ely townsfolk become concerned about tales of strange sounds experienced by some visitors traveling in certain areas of the wilderness -- sounds that mesmerized them, leaving them "tetched", in the vernacular. The town organizes what becomes a dysfunctional committee to investigate these reports. Finally, the New Yorkers arrive to help Betsy. They become quite enamored of the healthy outdoor environment. This memoir was undertaken to chronicle the personal events and thoughts of my life as a keepsake for my family and close friends. My intent was to pass on to children, grandchildren and their progeny the family heritage I had come to know and cherish, to recognize the blessings from man and God and to mention some interesting serendipitous events in my life. I discovered the beauty and awe of Wales, found a relationship to the Cherokee "Trail of Tears", succeeded in research benefiting millions of people with cancer and AIDS and accrued a cadre of colleagues and life-long friends because of one measly obscure germ called Pneumocystis (noo" mo-sis' tis) that causes fatal pneumonia. Serendipitously, my career in academic medicine and infectious diseases was determined by a young patient with tularemia (rabbit fever). The highlight of my life from birth to grave has been my dear wife and children, for which my words fall far short of adequate in descriptions.

Careysburg recounts the story of the freed blacks from America, who settled in the West African St. Paul River settlement of Liberia beginning in 1856. The settlement was greatly influenced by Western culture; however, there were intermarriages with indigenous regional groups, mainly the Kpelle and Bassa tribes. In the following text, two basic research questions are asked: (1) Did settlers who were seeking freedom achieve the true promise of freedom? and (2) How did their pursuit of freedom impact their social and cultural relationship with the indigenous people?
