Andrew King is described on his Twitter account as "artist and cartoonist." It is a self-deprecating description for someone whose work can indeed be found in some of the finest art collections in the country, and from time to time, on the comics page of the Ottawa Citizen or the Kitchissippi Times. Andrew is also a detective, which doesn't get mentioned as often, a history sleuth who loves to solve old mysteries. Where exactly is the first house built in Ottawa? Was there really a nuclear reactor once at Tunney's Pasture? And what in the world happened to Ottawa's once famous tiki bar at the Talisman Inn? Andrew has been seeking answers to questions like these since launching the popular website Ottawa Rewind in 2013. In Ottawa Rewind, Andrew has set out to find the location of shipwrecks in the Ottawa River, the Playboy Bunnies that once worked the Riverside Hotel in Vanier and every last Freemason or Knights Templar symbol built into Canada's Parliament Buildings. Ottawa Rewind is as much a mystery as a history book. Whimsical and well-researched, it is the creative work of a restless and curious mind. Also, the book that will finally tell you where an underground tunnel can be found in Ottawa.
Sergeant Winston Windflower and his trusty crew at the Grand Bank detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have more than a few mysteries on their hands. Windflower suspects that the three cases-a homicide, a near-homicide and a fire on Coronation Street-are somehow connected, but how is proving difficult to determine, especially now that he must battle his unusually cranky mood, the never-ending winter that has gripped the coastal region of Newfoundland and his new, power-hungry boss.In Fire, Fog and Water, Bony Blythe Award winner Mike Martin is true to form, retaining the light crime genre for which he is known while delving into the most perplexing social issues of our time, including mental health, addictions and workplace harassment. Windflower must not only solve the drug-and-death crimes that threaten the otherwise tranquil lives of Grand Bank's residents, he must resolve his own internal conflicts before they consume him as surely as the blaze that engulfed the house on Coronation Street."It's like going home each time I read about Sgt. Winston Windflower, his family, and his fellow officers in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. I enjoy these stories that contain a little mystery and at the same time a cozy feel to the life and times of this good man, Sgt. Winston Windflower." - Online Book Review, 4 out of 4 Stars"Readers interested in a small-town setting and a whodunit that is satisfyingly complex and thought-provoking will find Darkest Before the Dawn excels at creating a realistic atmosphere that keeps the story fast-paced and involving. Darkest Before the Dawn is highly recommended for murder mystery readers who like their stories as filled with life as with death." - Diane Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review"Be prepared to be charmed by Windflower, a food-loving sergeant who could possibly be Canada's most polite Mountie." - Halifax Chronicle-Journal
Poet, romantic, lover and carouser.Robert Burns blazed into Edinburgh in 1786 like a comet. The seat of the Scottish Enlightenment was electrified by the arrival of the ploughman poet and his free-thinking accounts of 18th century peasant life. But while Burns' tinder heart was often set alight, he found his love poems failed to have the desired effect on the "lively half of mankind," as the capital's refined ladies kept this force of nature at arm's length.Join Burns on his adventures in this historical novella told through the eyes of his young companion, John Bruce. In a town where you could hit "50 geniuses, 50 bankers, 50 lawyers and 50 rogues" with a pistol at any given hour, meet the infamous Deacon Brodie and the Crochallan Fencibles drinking club, and learn the cause of the rift between the poet and his young protégé - Clarinda, inspiration for one of his finest love tales, Ae Fond Kiss.
