An eye witness account of the failures of the social services to protect three young children from extreme abuse and neglect and how the eventual involvement of a social worker led to catastrophic consequences for those three children under her authority. This is a story, 1000's of children who passed through the care system can relate.
Caress It Like Messi starts on the morning of the 2023 Women's World Cup final, with England missing a clear-cut chance when a header is badly misdirected. Freya, 13, a talented footballer herself, shouts at the TV screen in frustration. But her brother Rye, 8, sympathises: "It happens to me all the time. The ball hits my head and shoots off in any random direction." Rye's corkscrew curls are the problem. They have a crazy, trampoline-like effect on the ball; he has no control over where it lands. Rye's an easy-going kid but when his football pals start calling him names, he slumps. The narrative takes the reader on Rye's path to self- discovery and self-esteem, via Lapland and a meeting with a very famous reindeer who himself had struggles with a standout facial feature which, in the end, proved to be the making of him. With its positive message about developing a thick skin to cope with adversity, it's a tale that will cheer up any child who has faced challenges. It ends with a heart-warming family reunion on Christmas Day.
Twenty-five years after Anna's unexplained disappearance from his life, William, a middle-aged Englishman living in Italy, runs into her perfect look-alike, Karen. Quizzed, the young South African denies any knowledge of Anna, even though she is living in her former flat. The chance meeting sets off an investigation that takes William back into a troubled past and a series of jealously guarded family secrets. As the unspeakable truth begins to emerge, it becomes clear that everyone who has been harmed and has struggled to survive must undergo a radical transformation. A novel about the haunting of the present by the past, Becoming a Tree explores the prisons this creates and the different ways people find to break free of them.
This book is about domestic violence. Abuse in any form is wrong, but when so many people are speaking their opinions who do you listen to? My motto was; 'there's no one out there to help me, so I found the strength to help myself'. I wrote this book from the heart as I, myself, have suffered abuse from childhood to adulthood. A cycle of abuse for 38 years. One day I found the strength to say I'm not tolerating this life anymore and I walked to a new life. I wanted my children to live fear free and to see them smile and laugh. Yes it's been 8 years of hard work trying to get a perfect life. Life is for living and you have to build your life, at times reconstruct your life. Life is trial and error, and life lessons you learn from. Don't live with regrets and, believe me, life goes by so fast year after year. Don't miss chances of happiness due to the abuser holding you back in life. To run to other men for protection as that cycle pattern in life will destroy the person who you should be. My life is perfect now but it's safe and peaceful and you can't put a price on your safety or living in peace; its priceless. This book will guide you and hopefully give you the strength to find a way to leave domestic violence and face any challenges in front of you to gain back who you are and you deserve to be a stronger happier person. Dream what you want to dream, go where you want to go, be who you want to be, as you only have one life and you only have one chance to do all the things you want to do and dream of. Be you who you are and want to be. No one has that right to change you or tell you who to be or what to do.
Following on from my previous book I felt very privileged to not only have Juliano an Arcturian visiting, but several months later being introduced to Chebar another Arcturian. All of this plus an amazing encounter with a spirit child named Miriam, who in turn recounted several of their past live experiences. Miriam played a huge part in our Trance group by demonstrating how they were able to make the stick, which was placed near to our trance cabinet, move and glow with different colours, during several of our meetings. This was certainly an entrancing experience and one never to be forgotten. It made the experiences further interesting to discover Miriam was now continuing their life journey as a Star Being with the Arcturians. This once again proved to me how there are so many out of this world beings living among us and watching over us. How fortunate we are to be living in these awakened times when disclosure is finally being made.
I first met Richard through a shared interest in the history of local buildings in Northampton, though I was already familiar with his excellent work on the Culworth Gang. Northampton has a significant number of older attractive buildings which should be appreciated. This book provides an excellent introduction to the history of some of the most interesting and intriguing of these properties. Furthermore, they can be found in a relatively compact and easily accesible area of the town. The book offers an insight into crime and punishment across several centuries. It will give you the incentive to seek out parts of the buildings which are hidden from view and provides an insight into the world of those who work in them today. Richard has presented a clear and entertaining guide together with accompanying photographs and plans. It can be enjoyed at home as well as on self-guided walks of the town. I look forward to seeing people carrying this book while looking up at the many beautiful buildings in Northampton. Mary Pilkington Local Historian.
I first met Charlie while listening to him preach. Halfway through his sermon, my wife leaned over and asked, "Why don't you hire Charlie to be yourschool's principal?" Little did I know only a few months later I would be working alongside Charlie as an elder, director, and a friend. Charlie has an incredible ability to encourage others by delivering inspired messages of grace and forgiveness. His words and actions come from the heart, both expressing the joys and sorrows of life. However, these expressions are never detached from that which Charlie cherishes most... the grace of Christ.
It isn't called "running" a bed and breakfast for nothing. What do you do when you move to a foreign country and haven't yet mastered the language and customs? Take it easy or find an old house in need of rebuilding, and open a B&B? Never one to run from a challenge, that's exactly what Emma did in an idyllic seaside town on the west coast of Sweden - in the middle of a winter where temperatures dipped to minus twenty-two! With feet of snow, few daylight hours and a very small budget, Emma battled constantly with the challenges thrown at her. As winter progressed, plaster and paint turned to slush, wood cracked in the ancient house and frequent night climbs on to the roof resulted in bruises, cuts, and a few broken bones. Having survived the renovation, the real business of running a B&B began. No sleep, a lack of privacy and the odd drunken threesome (by the guests!) would push her to her limit. With perseverance and determination, Emma succeeded in living her dream. Here you can share her extraordinary journey. www.emmastrandbergbooks.com. "Highly entertaining, the perfect book for anyone who dreams of opening their own B&B or escaping the rat race! It is honest, funny, and written as it happened, with much humour and forbearance".
Social justice is a matter of pride for any country where the disadvantaged are treated with sensitivity and extra help by the society and/or by the state. It is needed because many people in our society are born or come from a disadvantageous background. Millions and millions of people struggle everyday for food, clothing, housing, healthcare and education. This society is highly unequal and people are inherently selfish. Some people are greedy too and want to grow at the expense of others. This book attempts to answer some basic questions of social justice. Inequality and capitalist driven economy has boomeranged in 21st century. This book further attempts to seek answers from the works and lives of those personalities who dedicated their lives to the cause of social justice. Finally, attempts to illuminate the mind of the reader to help bring happiness and prosperity for all through social justice.
This concise study posits that the Cold War defined the lives of John F. Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, and Lee Harvey Oswald. It also challenges longstanding interpretations of each of the three lives. Today, Khrushchev is a nearly forgotten historical figure, the arc of his colorful life neglected in Russia, rarely taught in American classrooms, and the subject of a relatively small number of monographs. While Kennedy remains a household name, the circumstances of his death have receded deeper into the past in mainstream discourse. Lee Harvey Oswald is almost universally assigned the role of the presidential assassin, as opposed to the alleged assassin. The Russian cultural expression "former people" (Бывшие люди) is a thematic concept used as a springboard to recover accurate accounts of the lives of the three influential figures. The intersection of the three lives comes into focus with the assassination of President Kennedy. The procedural flaws of the Warren Commission are examined along with the egregious shortcomings of the Warren Report, resulting in over a half-century of disinformation. At the more literal intersection of Houston and Elm Streets in Dallas, a turning point in modern history occurred on November 22, 1963. The significance of that event may be understood through the mosaic of three lives. James Norwood, Ph.D. (University of California, Berkeley) taught in the humanities and the performing arts at the University of Minnesota from 1985-2011. Among the curricula he offered was a semester course on the JFK assassination. He has published articles on President Kennedy's Vietnam policy and the life of Lee Harvey Oswald. At the time of the fiftieth anniversary of the assassination of JFK, he delivered a lecture series at the University of Minnesota entitled "The Assassination of John F. Kennedy: An Event That Changed History." "An engaging revisionist history of Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Oswald. Norwood supports his argument with 570 research endnotes and carefully balances a solid grasp of the relevant literature (even while questioning the underlying conclusions of mainstream scholars) with an accessible writing style. The book's inclusion of seven "Pictorial Essays" offers insightful analysis and visual images to accompany its re-evaluation of the three men." (Kirkus review)

A story about three pensioners who finally caught up again after some fifty years and discovered that their curiosity and sense of adventure has not diminished - just got a bit creaky; which is why the walks were kept to a reasonable distance with a pub at the end as a reward - friendship hasbecome more important than distance. With a lead from Wainwright the Fell-Wanderer, and a few beers, it was decided to walk from Derby to Malton via Sheffield - through the places where they now live. This was a journey in a number of stages where individual strengths and weaknesses enlivened an adventure and when curiosity was still allowed to surface unselfconsciously. A relaxing and companionable walk spread over nearly three years taking in cultural attractions and a beer festival (twice). A time when they continued to learn and to conjecture about nature, the weather and why things are built that way. They couldn't decide whether this book was going to be a travelogue, a guide book, tourist information or an advert for the Yorkshire Wolds and North Derbyshire, but it doesn't really matter. It's about the importance of friendship, trust and sharing; perhaps inspiring other old friends to try something similar - it's really worthwhile.
This amazing testimony recounts the true experiences of visitations from a Star Being. It all started with three blue glows which eventually merged together to become an out of this world being. The being spoke telepathically saying, they came with peace and love. After several more visitations, the Arcturian appeared several times in our Trance group to the astonishment of everyone. The book describes others that inhabit our world, such as angels, archangels, spirit energy and alien beings that are around us. It teaches us how to open our eyes to discovering where we come from. How many people today are confused with their origins and is it because they are Starseeds from other planets or dimensions? This book beckons those who are willing to engage in the belief that we are not alone, but that there are many from the star galaxies and the spirit world, who watch over us and wish to help us without interfering in our lives.
In July 1943, Mussolini is deposed by more moderate Italian Fascists and taken to a secret location. A weak government under Italy's king wants to make peace with the Allies. On the surface, the Allies should be celebrating. But in London, Winston Churchill is troubled. With Mussolini gone, there is nothing to stop Italy's Communists forming a Bolshevik government in the north. From there, they're one move away from joining up with French Communists in southern France and Tito's Communists in Yugoslavia. If Stalin joins them, suddenly the Communists will control the whole of Southern Europe. It's an unbeatable nightmare scenario. The stakes could not be higher. Lose Southern Europe to Stalin, the Allies lose the war in Europe. Churchill attempts a desperate gamble. The only thing that can head off the Communists takeover is to put Mussolini back in power. But naturally, Churchill cannot be seen to arrange such a thing. Hitler, though... Could Churchill's agents persuade Hitler's forces to rescue Mussolini without tipping their hand? They're about to try. Churchill sends in his top Italian SOE agent, Major George Huntington on a secret mission to Rome. The mission: spread the rumour that Churchill wants Mussolini found and put on trial in London for war crimes. When the Gestapo hear these rumours, they inform Hitler. Hitler, enraged, sends his top paratroop commander, General Kurt Student to Italy to find Mussolini, rescue him and put him back in power. The fate of the future now sits on the shoulders of two men: Huntington and Student, opposing bishops in a game of secret international chess.
How the hell did I get here? It's a question I have regularly asked myself. After all, I left school at 16, failed to make the grade as a professional footballer and I had no plan. Not ideal in summer 1981 with 3 million unemployed. My memoirs take you from my first job in a silk screen print shop in Walthamstow to my first step into financial services as a debt collector in the East End of London right through to where I'm appointed CEO and a director of GE Capital Bank 20 years later. Recognising that my destiny is at the top table in financial services and having "got the bug", I then tell my story of the next 20 years where I go on to start up four new business ventures, each one of them in a different sector of financial services and resulting in quite different outcomes. My 40-year career has had more than a few twists and turns, highs and lows but along the way I must have subconsciously made notes of those hard lessons learned, as I have managed to recall and write down 12 nuggets of wisdom which I believe my 21-year-old self and anyone starting out in business might benefit from reading. All proceeds from the sales of this book will be donated to Muscular Dystrophy UK in memory of my niece Niamh Duffy
This book is all about one extended family's adventures, over a period of more than 30 years, riding horses and driving narrowboats around many of the country's ancient transport routes - tracks, bridleways, roads, canals and rivers.
The Mad King of Bavaria & Richard WagnerA study of the life, death and mental capacity of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the complex, love-hate relationship between himself and the composer Richard Wagner.

Proper Guardians offers an introduction to the life and thought of John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) and a commentary and guide to his text of 1859, On Liberty. For a period steeped in waves of political correctness, with varied assaults on the liberty of expression, On Liberty (1859) remains a signal work, championing the vital worth of personal and political liberty. Mill promotes the liberty of thought and expression, affirming 'the inward domain of consciousness, demanding liberty of conscience in the most comprehensive sense, liberty of thought and feeling, absolute freedom of opinion and sentiment on all subjects, practical or speculative, scientific, moral or theological'. Against the claims of those who think that all should respect and defend whatever views they self-affirm, Mill defends the 'liberty of expressing and publishing opinions'. He thinks that although this 'may seem to fall under a different principle, since it belongs to that part of the conduct of the individual which concerns other people', such liberty of expression is actually 'almost of as much importance as the liberty of thought itself and resting in great part on the same reasons, is practically inseparable from it'. Liberty also 'requires liberty of tastes and pursuits, of framing the plan of our life to suit our own character, of doing as we like, subject to such consequences as may follow, without impediment from our fellow creatures, so long as what we do does not harm them, even though they should think our conduct foolish, perverse, or wrong'. Mill also defends the liberty of association, for the 'liberty of each individual follows the liberty, within the same limits of combination among individuals; freedom to unite for any purpose not involving harm to others; the persons combining being supposed to be of full age and not forced or deceived'. Many questions are raised by Mill's defence of liberty, but Mill's view make a strong challenge to those currents of thought and opinion in modernity that look to restrict discussion of ideas that will offend conventions against free discussion of the virtues of colonialism, the issue of trans rights, and the general benefits of free expression. Mill's view is that human worth, individual and social, prospers when each person accepts that they are 'the proper guardian' of their 'own health, whether bodily or mental and spiritual'. The crucial idea for Mill is that humanity gains in a reciprocal life, 'by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves', rather 'than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest'. Thus, as individuals possessing self-regarding and other-respecting liberty, we defend and develop an authentic and civilized society.
"Earth's magnetosphere is weakening more rapidly than anticipated. A reversal of Earth's polarity may be imminent," spacecraft designer Athanasia Broadbent learns."A geomagnetic jerk generating civilisation destroying tsunamis could follow," her informant continues.Spurred on by this warning, Athanasia, her archaeologist husband Simon, and their world leading mathematician son Ethan cooperate with Originals in a quest to protect Earth's information by transferring it into space.Originals have lived on Earth for over five hundred million years. They communicate by telepathy. Their ancestors experienced the devastation of life caused by a geomagnetic jerk. The genesis of a hybrid Original opens the tale. One interacts with Athanasia's war hero great-grandfather Peter Broadbent and others. Later, the self-made billionaire Flora Maie Heenan provides finance and space launching facilities to send Athanasia's son Ethan and grandson Ambrose into space.International villains threaten the space venture while trying to steal scientific secrets from Ethan. Ambrose uncovers the devious plot of Originals to take control of humans.Excitement builds as Ambrose engages in space with the most intellectually advanced Original. The outcome hangs in the balance until one prevails. The victor controls the intellect sent into space thereby achieving immortality.
