Through a welcome bundle of poetic correspondence with an international community of artists and poets, a seasoned North Carolina poet and spouse of a U.S. Marine (author of previous collections Uniform, Permanent Change of Station, and FORCES) shares intimate insights and observations on creating history, family, community, and art. "In her engagements with poets from Ireland to India, as well as U.S. military veterans and families, Lisa Stice is an ideal correspondent with art and history," says the publisher. "Stice introduces us to old words and new friends. With the flow and scrawl of her metaphorical pen, she delivers every poet's dream: accessible, illuminating conversations with our world-at-large-including our pasts, presents, and unfolding possibilities." Includes a special 3-prompt mini-section on how to write your own epistolary poems!

  • - Poems & Micro-Stories About Military Gear
    av Lisa Stice
    245,-

In an anthology chock-full with revealing poetry and prose, more than 50 emerging and established military writers unpack their stories of sacrifice, hardship, joy, and laughter in uniform!Contributors to Things We Carry Still: Poems & Micro-Stories about Military Gear were challenged to capture their narratives in 300 words or less, or few lines of poetry! "Inspired by a prompt from writer and activist-veteran Vicki Hudson, the uniforms, objects, and souvenirs we found in closets, shoeboxes, and footlockers revealed not only anecdotes and war stories, but also threads of history," says project co-editor Randy Brown. "We discovered that stories from recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began to interweave with those from the Vietnam War, deployments to Korea and other countries, and even family stories from World War II." To motivate other writers, veterans, and readers, the anthology includes a special section of 10 discussion-starters and prompts, for use in literary and history workshops, book clubs, and veterans-appreciation activities! Lisa Stice is an award-winning poet based in North Carolina. Her work often centers on family life and parenting adjacent to the U.S. Marine Corps. She is the author of four collections, including FORCES and Permanent Change of Station, and the editor at multiple literary journals and presses worldwide. She is a past winner in the Col. Darron L. Wright Memorial Writing Awards, administered annually by the Chicago-based literary journal Line of Advance. Randy Brown is a journalist and poet, and a 20-year retired veteran of the Iowa Army National Guard. He is the author of Welcome to FOB Haiku: War Stories from Inside the Wire, as well as a co-editor of Why We Write: Craft Essays on Writing War. He is a three-time finalist in the Col. Darron L. Wright Memorial Writing Awards. Vicki Hudson is a rugby coach, literary activist, and retired U.S. Army veteran based in Northern California, where she lives with her wife, two kids, and a failed service dog. She is the author of No Red Pen: Writers, Writing Groups & Critique.

A PERFECT GIFT OF POETRY FOR MILITARY FAMILIES AND MOTHERS-AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM! With humor and grace, Lisa Stice (author of the previously published Uniform, Aldrich Press, 2016) lovingly interrogates and illuminates life in a military family. "Her close observations of childhood magic and household routines, quietly set against ever-present question-marks of wartime deployment and displacement, are essential and timely insights into the modern military family experience, " says the publisher."If you've ever been a military kid, parent, or spouse-regardless of age or branch or era-you'll find a welcome home in her words."Together with her toddler daughter and little dog Seamus, Stice explores the in-betweens of separation and connection, and the quest for finding one's place in the world-whether child or adult.Stice's signature style is open and accessible-this is poetry for people who think they don't read poetry. Frequently, for example, she borrows phrases from texts she finds readily at hand around the house, including quotations from Sun Tzu's "The Art of War," and Dr. Seuss's "The Sneetches."In another point of entry, the family's beloved Norwich Terrier often appears as a sentry, companion, and guide. In one poem, "The Dog Speaks," Stice writes: He says, I can't leave. This place is mine-I claimed all the trees.I say, There will be more. After all the temporary homesand all the stops in between, this whole countrywill by yours.
