On lui offrit alors un livre d'entretiens de Jacques Ellul avec une journaliste, ouvrage traitant très librement et avec une grande franchise du cheminement personnel et intellectuel de ce remarquable penseur français de conviction protestante d'une renommée internationale. Le but était d'en faire une ample recension. Il en est sorti la première partie de ce livre, un compte-rendu d'abord publié dans La revue réformée, texte où l'on décrit le parcours intellectuel de Jacques Ellul. On y voit les paramètres personnels qui ont conduit Ellul à devenir l'un des auteurs protestants francophones les plus prolifiques et souvent les plus perspicaces de sa génération. Il fut d'abord marqué par une expérience religieuse très forte qui le conduisit à étudier la pensée de Jean Calvin. Les circonstances très difficiles de sa jeunesse, où il fut appelé à subvenir aux besoins de ses parents, le mena à découvrir la pensée de Karl Marx. Ce dualisme de positions si contraires fut résolu pour lui par la découverte de la dialectique de Karl Barth, lui permettant pour un temps de résoudre le conflit si violent au c¿ur de sa pensée. Par la suite, son sociologisme marxisant eut le dessus et sa pensée chrétienne devint de plus en plus fantaisiste. Les deux dernières parties de ce livre examinent les effets désastreux qu'eut sur son éthique et son exégèse l'irrationalité de la dialectique barthienne. Elles eurent pour origine une demande faite à l'auteur de compléter son premier écrit biographique, cela pour un volume collectif consacré à l'¿uvre de Jacques Ellul. L'ampleur de ces études ne permit pas qu'elles soient publiées dans ce volume. L'influence de l'irrationalisme barthien rendit impossible pour lui de pratiquer une exégèse fidèle aux Écritures ainsi que la formulation d'une éthique conforme à la Loi de Dieu et à l'ordre stable de la création. Terminons par une citation tirée d'une lettre récente d'un pasteur américain, Joel Saint qui écrit : Votre texte fait comprendre au lecteur, non seulement que l'approche dualiste, pourrait-on dire, même schizophrène de Jacques Ellul, n'est pas seulement indéfendable par rapport à la Loi de Dieu mais est une source de danger mortel pour l'Église de Jésus-Christ.
