Hij en zijn familie zochten in Nederlands-Indië hun fortuin, maar kwamen naast gelukkige momenten rampspoed en ongeluk tegen.Bram Waanders ziet na een leerzame carrière in het leger bij de verbindingstak van de genie een mogelijkheid om bij de Indische Post-, Telegraaf- en Telefoondienst te gaan werken. De Nederlandse regering ging Indië meer zien dan een wingewest en investeerde in telefonie en infrastructuur. Hoewel dit een grote verandering was, bleven tussen en binnen de Indische bevolkingsgroepen grote ongelijkheden bestaan. Ongelijkheid zag Bram ook binnen zijn beroepsgroep. Hij maakte zich hard om hier actief iets tegen te doen: in de vakbond, de pers en de politiek. De crisis in de jaren '30 verergerde de situatie, maar gaf hem ook een reden om een paar tandjes bij te zetten. Het opkomende ultranationalisme en fascisme in Europa en Azië waren van een compleet andere aard; deze zouden het bestaan en de vrijheid in de kolonie ernstig gaan bedreigen.
