Benedictine Life: A Vision Unfolding is about a vision-a vision that arose more than 1,500 years ago when St. Benedict penned his rule for monks. A 21st century way forward for this tradition will arise only when we immerse ourselves in its wisdom teaching and emulate the witness of those who have invested their lives in it over many centuries. Only then will the vision unfold for us.Benedictine Life: A Vision Unfolding was also the title of the Centennial Colloquium of the Benedictine women's Monastic Congregation of St. Scholastica that took place June 21-24, 2022. Participants were Benedictine women and men, professed, oblates and seekers. This book is a compilation of the papers presented at that Colloquium, with the addition of an introduction by Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister who served as president of the Congregation from 1971-1978.These are the presenters and responders whose papers you will find in this book: Judith Sutera, OSB, Deborah Asberry, Edith Bogue, OSB, Linda Romey, OSB, Patricia Fawkner, SGS, Katie Gordon, Judith Valente, Oblate, Joanna Burley, OSB. May the insights and questions they present guide us into the next 100 years.
A soul-collector reckons with fading friends. The creatures of a fantastical nation are abandoned and rewritten by their disillusioned Creator. A woman who considers reconciling with her estranged mother is held up in a train station by a mysterious teenager. A girl tries to stay in her out-of-time, sepia-colored town against her brother's wishes. A letter addressed to the reader ponders what's been left behind. And two girls engage in bitter competition over a prize. Through each tale in this poignant short story collection, Katherine Ren unveils layers of whimsicality and surrealism to contemplate growth and the loss of innocence. She asks what is corporeal and what is not; what truly matters and not; all underpinned by a consistent backdrop of imaginative duality. "Two Children" is unafraid to strike out against the reader, to force us to look back, and inwards-to resolve.
Freshly smarting from her ex-boyfriend's shocking betrayal, Frances seems bound to spiral-until the morning she runs into a nameless stranger on the subway, launching a romantic day-long exploration of Manhattan. They discuss everything from their childhoods to their futures as Frances desperately attempts to decipher this fleeting entanglement and parse out her companion, whose carefree manner belies a certain sorrow. In this compact and witty novella, Lara Katz winds through a heady exploration of womanhood and identity through whip-smart dialogue and sobering revelations. The unknown is not a dangerous force in this story; instead, it rejuvenates, provokes, and summons necessary challenge.

In this partially autobiographical book, Professor David Christopher Lane, PhD., a long-time skeptic of religion and the paranormal, explains why he meditates and why he believes it is extremely beneficial to human well-being. Includes a detailed section on how to meditate using an ancient technique called shabd yoga (listening to the inner sound) without resorting to mythological concepts or overlays. From the Text: I don't meditate with an end goal or with some underlying desire for a specific enlightened state mentioned in some ancient holy book or postulated by a revered sage. I meditate just like I surf: for the bliss of the ride. Where it will eventually take me is not dissimilar to where life takes us: to the unexpected and to the unexplored. In other words, it is the means of meditation and not some desired end that is fulfilling. I have noticed that if I get anxious about some result or when I feel a rush, as if entering a time and space portal to a new world, I lose my own balance by clutching. Letting go, surrendering, to our own consciousness and not succumbing to the endless stream of virtual simulations (which our brains are evolutionarily designed to do) is to apprehend the meta program and experience why it emerged.

Othello, A Tragedy by William Shakespeare, Simplified and Adapted by L. J. Lynn is the fifth in a series of adaptations. It does not purport to replace the original play but to complement it by making it more readable to the contemporary public. Unlike other modern versions, this is not an expository rendition in prose aimed at reducing the content to its simplest form, but it does attempt to keep the meaning, rhythm, and rhyme, line for line, where it is appropriate. For example, in Act I, scene iii, Desdemona must respond to her father how and why she came to be with Othello:DESDEMONAMy noble father,I do perceive here a divided duty:To you I am bound for life and education; My life and education both do learn meHow to respect you; you are the lord of duty;I am hitherto your daughter: but here's my husband,And so much duty as my mother show'dTo you, preferring you before her father,So much I challenge that I may professDue to the Moor my lord. The adaptation shows this same passage:DESDEMONADear Father, I don't know what to say, except I'm torn in two and have no wayto please the both of you. I know how much I oweyou for my education and upkeep of my very life, but I also owe this Moor as much, you know, for we wooed and wed. I am his wife. When some of the text is somewhat obtuse, as in:OTHELLO. . . when light-wing'd toysOf feather'd Cupid seal with wanton dullnessMy speculative and officed instruments,That my disports corrupt and taint my business . . . The adaptation becomes:OTHELLOI am saying that I would not let her being there affectmy performance in the field where I do function well, andI don't want her there just for the sexual pleasure where I am not doing so well, -- for I am too old, you know, and if you found me lying in bed with her instead of doing my job . . . Admittedly, this effort is a purely subjective interpretation of meaning based on research and further readings. It in no way pretends to be authoritative. It does try to extract what the characters intended in terms of modern references. If the result is that a better understanding of the content is achieved, then the effort has been a resounding success.
In this first edition of the Vesuvio anthology, readers will find recent unpublished works by three authors often associated with the 'Nomaterialist' movement. Their names are also familiar as three of the most prominent publishers of American poetry today. Here they offer engagements with each other's work, statements concerning poetry in general, and a complicated philosophy that marks them as major-if unrecognized-figures. They are not only anti-anti-intellectual, but also anti-anti-meaning, and anti-anti-sincerity, all for the sake of immediacy, satisfaction, and compersion. Despite the fierce polemical differences between Newberger and the other two, they are united in their quest for never-ending life.
Whispers of Defiance by Wyatt Ashford is a poetry and short story book that defies traditional norms and celebrates the rebellious spirit of artistic expression. The book is inspired by the unconventional styles of various avant-garde poets, plus Jim Morrison, Bukowski, and the life and work of Arthur Rimbaud. In the preface, the author shares his personal journey of becoming a poet and his struggle to get his work published. He reflects on the challenges of being a writer in a world where people seem to have moved away from reading books and embraced other forms of entertainment. But despite the setbacks, the author never gave up on his dream, and now, after years of hard work and perseverance, he presents his unique and unconventional collection of poems and short stories.Whispers of Defiance is not your typical poetry book. Certain poems are written in clear "story" form, while others are quite experimental and avant-garde, breaking many rules. But within these unconventional forms, the author has recorded his thoughts, feelings, and observations, transforming them into perfectly formal lines that express the inexpressible. This book is a celebration of the rebellious spirit of artistic expression, a tribute to those who continue to create, even in the face of rejection and self-doubt. Whispers of Defiance will engage and inspire readers to express themselves in their own unique and unconventional ways.
Surprisingly, one of the more lucid insights on the philosophy of the Tibetan Book of the Dead comes from a Hindu mystic, named Baba Faqir Chand, who apparently was not familiar with the original Tibetan text or its English translation. Although Faqir was not conversant with the Bardo Thotrol, he was nevertheless steeped in its philosophy as taught to him by his guru, Shiv Brat Lal of Gopiganj. Faqir Chand, like his lama counterparts, spent much of his life in meditation, attempting to consciously go through the dying process in order to prepare himself for his final exit. However, unlike others of his kind, Faqir left a detailed account of his some 70-plus years of meditation (ranging from three to 12 hours daily) which led up to his enlightenment. The result is a richly detailed account which provides a thorough understanding of how inner visions and the like are projected in the intermediate stages between life and death.
