Erano numeri destinati ad aumentare, specie se i tentativi adottati per affrontare l'emergenza sanitaria non riuscirono a contenere stabilmente la propagazione del virus e gli allentamenti delle misure di distanziamento sociale implementate nei vari Stati, seppur secondo modalità differenti, provocheranno il riacuirsi della malattia e la nascita di nuovi focolai. A maggio 2020, il quadro clinico in lento ma costante miglioramento ha permesso l'avvio della cosiddetta fase 2 della gestione della malattia, eppure il bilancio delle vittime rimane tragico, con un significativo eccesso di mortalita rispetto all'atteso.
