"Perhaps the history of no State in the Union contains more events of adventurous interest than that of Tennessee." -William Henry Carpenter Historian William Henry Carpenter (1813-1899) was the author of history books on ten different states. In 1857 Carpenter published "The History of Tennessee: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time."In introducing his book, Carpenter writes:"Perhaps the history of no State in the Union contains more events of adventurous interest than that of Tennessee. Settled originally by a rough border population, surrounded by vindictive and subtle enemies, upon whose territory they had established themselves in defiance of opposition and in contempt of danger, the long and bloody wars which followed encroachments repeatedly renewed have no parallel except in the annals of Kentucky. Yet this sturdy people, separated from the older States by intervening mountains, not only sustained themselves against the incessant assaults of their adversaries, but righted their own wrongs, assisted to repel invasion, and finally evolved order and prosperity out of tumult and disaster."

"One of the most valuable contributions yet made to our knowledge of the state of the South." - Saturday ReviewFrances Butler Leigh (1838-1910) was the daughter of Pierce Mease Butler and famous English actress Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble, who owned cotton, tobacco and rice plantations on Butler Island, among the largest in Georgia, just south of Darien, Georgia, and the hundreds of slaves who worked them. The family visited Georgia during the winter of 1838-39, where they lived at the plantations at Butler and St. Simons islands, in conditions primitive compared to their house in Philadelphia. Kemble was shocked by the living and working conditions of the slaves and their treatment at the hands of the overseers and managers, which led to her divorcing Pierce. In 1863, Kemble published "Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839," which included her observations of slavery and life on her husband's Southern plantation in the winter of 1838-39.After the divorce Frances Butler Leigh sided with her father on the plantations and later inherited them after the Civil War. Based on her experience, Leigh published "Ten Years on a Georgian Plantation since the War (1883)," as a rebuttal to her mother's account.Leigh notes that after the Civil War "the whole country had of course undergone a complete revolution... our slaves had been freed; the white population was conquered, ruined, and disheartened, unable for the moment to see anything but ruin before as well as behind, too wedded to the fancied prosperity of the old system to believe in any possible success under the new."After the war the plantation fields had not been cultivated in four years and the former slaves agreed to work, but they would now have to be paid.Regarding the productivity of hired help, Leigh writes critically:"The prospect of getting in the crop did not grow more promising as time went on. The negroes talked a great deal about their desire and intention to work for us, but their idea of work, unaided by the stern law of necessity, is very vague, some of them working only half a day and some even less. I don't think one does a really honest full day's work, and so of course not half the necessary amount is done and I am afraid never will be again, and so our properties will soon be utterly worthless, for no crop can be raised by such labour as this."

THE GATES AND PORTALS DID EXISTPeople from the continents of the Earth were able to relocate to other worlds/earths by ships. It's not for nothing that they say space elf, because they were real ships sailing through the gates in ice to other worlds and not to the empty space above Earth. Universe means "Whole World" in Czech. People sailed through the gates or to travel to the Whole World used Portals, based on a similar system used in the Philadelphia Experiment. Some places in the world like the island of Rapa-Iti, still have the Portal. Portals were either rebuilt or demolished.

'Kaleidoscope' edition, Vol. 6 is an in-depth and historic look through northeast Ohio's Cleveland & Chagrin Falls (C. & C. F.) and Cleveland & Eastern (C. & E.) railway interurban systems. The book contains an array of significant information not covered in previous editions. Comparisons between the two lines will be examined along with a merit of data. The author has previously published two books on the C. & E., therefore, the building history, operations and abandonment of the C. & C. F. route will be primarily focused upon. However, several important areas and Stops along the C. & E. line will be investigated.A comprehensive look at the Cleveland & Chagrin Falls line from Cleveland to Garrettsville will be presented. The author will take the reader on a Stop by Stop tour, creating an informative and panoramic view as to what was and remains today. This includes recent photos of remote locations along the right-of-way never before seen.An historic and comprehensive analysis of unique Stops will be examined. These include the Cleveland & Chagrin Falls Carbarns, Smith's Crossing, South Newbury Station, Punderson Lake, Hiram House Camp, Mooreland Hills Valley, Steele's Crossing, the Cleveland & Eastern lost church bell, along with construction materials from northeast Ohio's stone quarries which was used by the electric and steam railways to build and operate their lines. Each chapter contains an abundance of histories not previously published, offering the reader their own perspective as to why something may have occurred. For example, the Wales Hotel at Punderson Lake Stop 44 was removed two decades before the line was abandoned. The author provides a perspective from both sides, including a thorough history of Punderson Lake's development. Its later owners Mr. Cleveland and Long created the Lakefield Zoo which contained exotic animals such as Elk and Bison.Maps and blueprints denote the locations mentioned, providing an accurate placement and time frame. A large compilation of exclusive photographs are placed throughout each chapter in addition to a photo chapter. The story of Everett & Moore's interurban lines will place the reader back to the early 20th century, when life in northeast Ohio was simpler.

The gripping tales in Alonso's "Distractions" reflect an attention to detail which ushers each through a graceful and credible telling. Relationships blossom and crumble, except in rare instances of mutual acknowledgement and respect. There are characters well worth our empathy, and surely those that rate sympathy, while others perfectly merit our undiluted loathing. What's important is they all grab our interest, even the dour old aunt who, in one tale, poses for a memorable portrait: "Listening to her is like opening a closet full of dead people's shoes." Nina Rubinstein Alonso is a poet and lifelong devotee and practitioner of ballet, the art and discipline of which are implicit in these intimate excursions on the highways and byways of memory. - Tomas O'Leary

Arden Norian's poetry is a rallying cry for the Self in all of its rage, honesty, compassion, and love. Their horror at the world as they have found it and their clear-eyed insistence that it doesn't have to be this way rise off the page. At once personal and political, the poems, in their deep emotionality and delightful technical proficiency, remind us of what we owe to ourselves and our others during our brief moment on earth. - Sharon Paradiso, Professor of English, Endicott College

It was on the quiet shores of Wintervale Island where rare diamonds could be found in its seas. A sign of wealth and power, its sparkle and shine glistened only when it was at its darkest blue. And although it seemed serene, its tranquility was unforgiving to the many wives' tales that gave a glimpse of the people who lived on Wintervale Island. It was here where secrets were kept as treasured jewels, but there was a mysticism to its tree-lined streets of old Maples, whose leaves changed colors depending on the mood of the Island. Its homes were popularly decorated by wind chimes and cool salty breezes. It was soothing and comforting; yet, despite the Island's very wealthy families that lived here, it had simplicity. That was until the elite Blackmore Family took hold of Wintervale Island and young Deidre Blackmore. After marrying Jenson, Deidre Blackmore thought she had found the fairy tale life, only to soon find out that she would be forever trapped in a spiral of wealth and betrayal. It wasn't until she experiences a family tragedy that she finds the courage to leave the Blackmore Family behind, but only if they let her start over again.
