"From the foreward by Cardinal Justin Rigali: Fr. Richard Boever has written a biography of St. John Neumann in the first person as if the saint were speaking to the reader. Fr. Boever's objective to focus on the humanity of St. John, rather than on his accomplishments, is achieved in a unique way. The direct quotations of St. John throughout the text provide a moving context for the experiences of his life rooted in a deep trust in God. This chronology of St. John Neumann's life includes the development of his deep faith from the early years until his death while bishop of Philadelphia. The reader is privileged to peer into his heart during his discernment of a priestly vocation and his perseverance in traveling across the Atlantic to the United States, where he was ordained. Saint John's letters to his family in Bohemia are both tender and stirring in describing the challenges and joys of serving in the developing Church in the United States. His life as missionary and bishop convey the holiness and humility that attracted so many souls to being disciples of Jesus Christ"--
Detroit was once known as Murder City. Although it still has its share of violence and crime, the Detroit of the 1970's was a war zone, with more than seven hundred homicides a year. In Murder City, police officers had to act more like the lawmen of the Old West. They had to be constantly ready for things to go south, quickly. Author and former Detroit Police Department officer A. W. Boudreau was in the thick of the violence. He survived, but not all of his coworkers were so lucky. Four times as many cops died in seventies-era Detroit as do today. After completing extensive police academy training, Boudreau graduated and joined the Seventh Precinct of the Detroit Police Department in 1970. The reminders that his job was a dangerous one were all around him. The widow of a fellow officer killed in action attended the graduation ceremony, leaving Boudreau with a haunting memory of her sorrow. He devoted his career to making the streets safer for the innocent victims of violence. Boudreau's memoir will give you a new perspective on the difficulties big-city cops face every day on the job.
Author Mary E. Carter became Jewish after age fifty. This is her story. It's a story about creating a new life and making changes as an older adult. More than a how-to book, Carter takes the reader through her process of self-reflection and growth and provides insights into her family and cultural influences. She discusses: finding rabbis, attending classes, studying, making a Hebrew name, and the commitment at the mikvah. This is a book for anyone thinking about becoming Jewish as an adult. This is also a book for anyone considering any form of major change after age fifty. Mary E. Carter demonstrates that it is possible for an older person to continue growing and changing later in life. This is not to say that everyone can or will, but, certainly, anyone can try. L'Chaim!
