SOUTH CAROLINIAN MAXCY GREGG was a lawyer, a classically educated scholar with mastery of many languages, a politician, a veteran of the Mexican-American War, and later a volunteer soldier for the Confederate States of America, mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 at the age of 48. His primary interest, however, was the natural world, especially birds, more than 50 varieties of which he must have identified. Gregg was a self-instructed genuine expert and avid investigator of birdlife and wild plants and he had an astronomical observatory built into his house. His "sporting journals," long neglected sources of antebellum Southern history, were meticulous and are meticulously edited by Suzanne Parfitt Johnson. Gregg's recorded trips cover most of South Carolina, portions of neighboring States, and a sojourn in Mexico-mountains, rivers, Upcountry, Lowcountry. In addition to the wildlife and his hunting prowess or lack thereof, he describes topography, weather, and natural phenomenon (a comet, a hurricane, immense flights of passenger pigeons). The record also provides insight into city, country, and wilderness life. His hunting companions play a prominent part-dogs, horses, and men. Here is a realistic and unusual sample of antebellum Southern life as it was lived day by day. The Hardbound edition of this book was published in October 2019.
"Mr. Edwards ... that colorful Tennessee Wildcat Laura Ingalls Wilder so deeply loved. He helped Pa build the family's cabin, saved Christmas by carrying presents across a raging creek, and spit farther than Laura thought possible. Though he was a little rough around the edges, Laura simply adored Mr. Edwards. Through her vivid, heartwarming stories, we came to love him, too. But who was he? Virtually all Laura's Little House characters were real people ... even those whose names were changed to protect their reputations. Mr. Edwards, however, wasn't so easy to track down. In fact, he's the sole Little House enigma ... the only mentioned character that hasn't clearly surfaced via historical records. Was he fiction, for the sake of illustrating pioneer stereotypes? Was he a composite character, built from several men Laura knew during their time in Kansas? Was he a loose collection of memories and family lore, cobbled together for the sake of the narrative? Or was he a real man, whose full identity had previously evaded discovery?"--Cover, page 4.

Qui me rattrapera ?

In Sum Ledger's historical portraits, ekphrastic sonnets, and closely observed lyrics, Adam Tavel's signature fine-grained details and near hallucinatory clarity, no matter his subject, achieve far more than a kind of painterly attention to subject, something more ambitious and necessary. Tavel is showing us the America we have been and now are with this unspoken but omnipresent principle: to look very closely at the faces of the dead and the living, indeed to touch them, lightly, but not to hold them at arm's length. To do so is only posturing, not compassion. Whether conjuring patients in a consumptive ward or writing about his son's guitar while contemplating colonialism's claim on so many young lives, Tavel portrays the complexity and avarice of a country's past and present with a sure command of language, evoking the lyric's great strength in keeping open the barriers between realms of experience.
