Jahrhunderts.

ÆTHERUM - As if fueled by the divine energy of the ether, the current edition paves the way to the secret thoughts, desires, and dreams that lie dormant within every human body. In this kaleidoscope of sensuality, the nudes transcend the human body as a physical shell and tell stories of vulnerability and intimacy, but also of self-empowerment, strength, and beauty.ÆTHERUM brings together work by established photographic artists and up-and-coming talents. Once again, the specific female perspective on the human body has been accorded just as much importance as a nuanced portrayal that couldn't be further from common stereotypes.

Scientist and photographer Oliver Ullrich (b. 1960) returns to explore the Cabo de Gata in Andalusia, one of the driest regions in Europe. At first glance, the landscape here appears frozen and unchanging, but Ullrich tracks down the places where nature seems to communicate. Various natural objects, wind, water, and sun interact and reveal nature here as a living thing that can be experienced as a poetic rather than a purely rational quality. The images in Synaptic Landscape bear witness to vitality, beauty, and change in equilibrium-as signs of a healthy landscape. At the same time, however, they highlight the vulnerability of nature and remind us of the threat posed by humankind.

Millions of people around the globe live in Plattenbau. The majority of these were constructed in the second half of the twentieth century and always went hand in hand with lofty ambitions. They were intended to alleviate the housing shortage and to make daily life simpler. Often, however, the planned cities of the future came to symbolize failed utopias. The hoped-for social mixing largely failed to materialize and residents often felt marginalized. Christoph Montebelli (b. 1980) visited four Plattenbau housing estates on four continents-in Berlin, Hong Kong, Havana, and Zanzibar-and through his photographs explores the relationship between aspiration and reality. Free from oversimplification or prejudice, Plattenbau Promenades conveys a powerful insight into these architectural enfants terribles and illustrates the dynamic interaction between local features, visions of an architectural aesthetic, and the people who live there.

umformung is the first comprehensive monograph on the work of Wuppertal sculptor Jaana Caspary (b. 1988), whose abstract, monochrome sculptures made of cast acrylic resin, stone, or bronze have been causing a furor for several years now. Many of these sculptures, which are often accompanied by colored pencil drawings and photomontages, are characterized by the referencing of several related basic forms, each elaborate in itself. Jaana Caspary visualizes the presence of such modules in collective everyday life, but also in nature, repeatedly demonstrating the rich variety and complexity of their meanings. With a particular focus on the most recent exhibitions, umformung presents the most important groups of works and key pieces from Caspary's oeuvre of the last ten years.

The Stahnsdorf South-Western cemetery on the outskirts of Berlin is the tenth-largest in the world. Large areas of the site are forested, with more wild flora and winding paths than perfectly trimmed hedges and asphalt roads. Over the period of two years, photographer Anke Krey, driven to find out more about their work, shadowed the employees at the graveyard with her camera. How does the daily confrontation with death affect them? What is their relationship to the earth and the forest that provides the final resting place for thousands upon thousands of people?ERDEN provides a respectful and quiet chronicle of the daily tasks and the complex demands of the work here, which can vary from one hour to the next. Prior to funerals, for example, the workers swap their everyday work clothes for a black suit and tie; the foresters and technicians become funeral directors and spiritual counselors who bury the deceased and offer words of solace to relatives. Anke Krey's photographs capture and condense the transcendence of mundane manual work alongside these ever-present reminders of human mortality with a rare intensity.

NEW ECOLOGIES - Art and Climate is the title of an ambitious public art project organized by the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. The open-air exhibition aims to examine perspectives on ecological sustainability, raise awareness of climate policy issues, and explore possible fields of practice. Artistic interventions by established and internationally renowned artists, as well as young artists and initiatives from Chemnitz, will highlight the impact of the climate crisis and encourage global discourse at the local level. NEW ECOLOGIES marks the first art project in an urban space in Germany to address and discuss the problem of climate change and its environmental consequences. The exhibition thus also hopes to provide a practical contribution to a broad socio-political debate. The accompanying catalog documents the artworks in the public space and provides important background information in texts by leading authors.

A photograph of Marcel Duchamp, taken in Munich in 1912, serves more than a hundred years later as the starting point for seventeen drawings. Commissioned by the conceptual artist Rudolf Herz, Parisian street painters appropriated Duchamp's radically expressionless photographic portrait, each adding their own unique artistic signature. Duchamp's time in Munich in particular led to his decision to free himself from any form of artistic signature, the "patte", or "paw". Herz's thesis: Duchamp's photograph anticipates the development revealed through his revolutionary idea of readymades.Marcel Duchamp. La Patte is an ironic response to Duchamp's decision and reflects in a playful and associative way the fundamental turning point in his work. Texts by Antje von Graevenitz and others outline the art-historical context.

Xu Yong (b. 1954, Shanghai) was one of the first photographers to focus on everyday life in modern China, free from political romanticization or ideological whitewashing. In HUTONG 101 PHOTOS, he traces the history of the traditional residential district of Beijing, with its centuries-old buildings complete with rear courtyards and myriad narrow alleyways, the "Hutongs." Many of these neighborhoods have since fallen victim to radical redevelopment and have been demolished. Xu Yong's black-and-white images dating from 1989 bear witness to the rise and fall, the heyday and the decline of the Hutongs against the backdrop of the rapid societal change in China that followed the end of the Qing Dynasty. In this milestone of Chinese photography, which is now finally being published as a new edition in book form, Xu Yong has created an elegiac tribute to the old alleyways of Beijing, revealing both their poetic beauty and the sadness surrounding their demise.

Chile, 1973: on September 11, General Augusto Pinochet staged a coup to overthrow the elected government led by Salvador Allende, bringing a violent end to the idea of democratic socialism. From that point on, terror and repression reigned. José Giribás Marambio (b. 1948 in Santiago de Chile) lived through these events as a member of the workers' movement, a member of the opposition, and a photographer. In December 1973, he fled to Germany, where he made a new home for himself in Berlin. For over half a century, Giribás has repeatedly traveled to Chile with his camera to document a society shaped by the tension between political oppression, painful memories, and possibilities for democratic resistance. The resulting works have been exhibited worldwide and published in many renowned magazines and newspapers. Chile: Memories of my battered country is the first collection of his works, which are presented here together with a commentary.

Faig Ahmed (b. 1982) represented Azerbaijan at the 2007 Biennale in Venice and is considered to be one of the most important contemporary artists from the Middle East. His conceptual works, which combine traditional carpet weaving with contemporarysculptural techniques, have earned him international acclaim. The confrontation between the millennia-old tradition of craftsmanship and modern-day image production strategies reveals unimagined potential for reflection on the interplay between culture and religion, craftsmanship and art.Ahmed's first monograph offers deep insights into the creative processes behind his art and for the first time brings together all of the works created between 2007 and 2023, as well as visualizations of future projects. Numerous interviews and art-historical essays complete the volume and allow for a powerful exploration of the work of this exceptional artist.

The shared medium of Katharina Hinsberg and Monika Grzymala is drawing. The exploration of the line is central to both of their work. Many of their artworks transcend the traditional boundaries of the genre and, in their dynamic reach, take on an almost sculptural quality. While Katharina Hinsberg's lines dissect space with precision clarity, Monika Grzymala's imposing bundles of lines penetrate the space with an eruptive power. The two artistic approaches are being shown together for the first time in the joint exhibition Between a Line at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The accompanying catalog was created through an ongoing dialogue between the two artists. Two sketchbooks formed the basis; the artists worked in these alternately, each visually "interrupting" one another, constantly striving to confront their colleague's preliminary drawing work with their own understanding of the line, and exploring their artistic potential through a collaborative practice.

In 2018, Albert Coers (b. 1975) won the competition to design a memorial to the Mann family at the center of Salvatorplatz, a square in the heart of Munich. His proposal Straßen Namen Leuchten incorporates street signs bearing the names of various members of the Mann family, along with streetlamps from cities of particular importance to the family, including Munich, Lübeck, Nida, Rome, New York, São Paulo, and Zurich. The memorial conveys experiences of a life in exile, of internationality, and the family's charisma while simultaneously exploring the global reception of their work. This publication documents the creation of the memorial, together with the research behind it; interviews, texts, and images round out the volume with extensive background information.
