Documenting Koons' multisensory homage to the sun god, a timeless dialogue with ancient historyThe definitive record of Jeff Koons' (born 1955) Apollo Wind Spinner, his transcendent offering to Apollo, this volume brings together lush plates of the eponymous 2022 DESTE exhibition alongside an essay by Daniel Birnbaum and an extensive interview with the artist by Dakis Joannou. Koons' multisensory installation shone a light on the interwoven history of Greek myth, readymade sculpture and contemporary art to wide acclaim--so much so that the inhabitants of Hydra voted unanimously to have the work remain permanently installed on the roof of the DESTE Slaughterhouse building. The many threads of this particular story are explicated here through a detailed "glossary of terms," tracing references from Plato to Duchamp and enlightening the reader on one of Koons' most distinctive works of the last decade.

Leading and emerging artists and recent exhibitions from Dakis Joannou's DESTE FoundationMore than just a catalog of recent exhibitions, DESTE 33+: 2015-2022 is a map to the fascinating web of collaborations and friendships at the heart of Dakis Joannou's curatorial world. A rich array of archival images and new essays lend an overarching view to the DESTE Foundation's recent work. Studded with contributions by such artists as Urs Fischer, Kara Walker and Jeff Koons, it also introduces members of the younger generation continuing to shape and challenge contemporary art. "DESTE has always had a stake in the current climate," Joannou notes, and, even in the face of the pandemic's upheaval, continues "engaging in a global dialogue and offering a platform for new voices." Eight years after the release of DESTE 33 Years: 1983-2015, which introduced a broad audience to the DESTE project, this volume is an essential primer on the state of art today.

A multipart installation on the island of Hydra exploring mythic themes of earth and skyIn 2019, multidisciplinary artist Kiki Smith (born 1954) was invited to present a site-specific project at the DESTE Foundation Project Space in Hydra, a former slaughterhouse perched on the edge of the sea. Drawing on maritime history, mythology, astronomy and site-specific anthropology, Smith combined naturalistic and fantastic elements into a multipiece composition that reflects the lived and imagined memory of both the slaughterhouse--a stage for sacrifices--and the Hydra region itself. Alongside photographs of the installation and texts by Maggie Wright and Nadja Argyropoulou, Kiki Smith: Memory presents documentation of Smith's process for this project, which draws on a variety of mediums including sculpture, textiles and drawing.

Since the mid-1990s, Chris Ofili's (born 1968) painstakingly crafted paintings and sculptures have dazzled--and often distressed--viewers with a fusion of opposing forces: sacred meets profane, formal bows to demotic, and exalted bleeds into vulgar. Paintings of rare beauty are propped on elephant dung; deities squat to defecate; and lovers embrace and yet are forcibly bound. This volume in Deste's 2000 Words series is authored by Katherine Brinson, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, where she curated the museum's 2013 Christopher Wool retrospective and also organizes the Hugo Boss Prize, a biennial award honoring significant achievement in contemporary art.

The varied practice of Paul Chan (born 1973) includes paintings, drawings, video animations and font design, as well as critical writing. Chan explores the intellectual and sexual animus that courses through our collective language and consciousness, drawing on sources as varied as the King James Bible, Marquis de Sade and Samuel Beckett. Part of the 2000 Words series, conceived and commissioned by Massimiliano Gioni, and published by the Deste Foundation for Contemporary Art, 2000 Words: Paul Chan presents the entirety of the artist's works in the Dakis Joannou Collection and includes an essay by Stephen Squibb that reveals the solitary image and its uncanny animation in Chan's work.

Juxtaposing the heavenly and the debased, the innocent and the perverse, the celestial and the microscopic, Polish artist Jakub Julian Ziólkowski (born 1980) traces his artistic lineage from Hieronymus Bosch to Philip Guston. Ziólkowski's work makes a startling demand: it asks the eye not to glance but to hold focus on the unraveling chaos of his images, and to embrace the hallucinatory vehemence of his vision. Part of the 2000 Words series, conceived and commissioned by Massimiliano Gioni, and published by the Deste Foundation for Contemporary Art, this volume presents the entirety of the Polish artist's works in the Dakis Joannou Collection and includes an essay by Cecilia Alemani that examines how the artist's work searches the body for a nonhierarchical image of the universe.
