Sinking the Ark is a historical novel set in Portland, Oregon, in the 1970s. It tells the story of six characters working for the Rose City Ark, a counterculture newspaper founded in the Sixties. The charismatic founders are leaving, and the youngsters who inherit the paper see themselves as the next wave of visionaries. The trouble is, none of them know what the vision is. They can't base it on the ideals of the Sixties, that's the past. As for the future, who knows what that could be? In 1974, not a hint of it has come into view yet. Readers know what lies around the bend: cults, yuppies, computers, Reagan Revolution, political Islam, War on Terror, alternative facts, Conspiracy Theory-but the people of Ark see none of it yet. And so they set their course for a destination we know to be chimerical, a future that never came to be, and we laugh, and perhaps wipe away a tear or two, as we follow them on their quest.
