So, the plan was, once the band kicked off and we were touring the nation, to write short stories through the day and gig at night, making records every chance I could. Of course it didn't work out that way. Sure, bands came and went, some more records were made, but the short stories proved a problem. I needed to make a living. Enter music journalism. That led to the evolving series of books on Australia's rock and pop history under the banner, What's Been Did (And What's Been Hid). But the need to express myself creatively and intellectually meant there was a lot of other writing bubbling out. The best bits are gathered here in A Life In Books, which, as I began compiling it, turned out to be a bit of an autobiographical memoir as well.
