Weeks after giving birth to her son, Miranda McGuire is shipped off to the nation's largest female prison complex to begin a ten-year sentence. Still suffering from the crippling effects of postpartum depression, she must acclimate to this harsh new world-a world with its own rules, its own language, its own power structure. Here she will learn that her high IQ is about as useful as her politics, and that the line between friend and enemy can be as blurred as a watery strip in a plastic spoon. Outside the perimeter fence, a global pandemic rages on. Inside, far more pressing threats abound. As the postpartum fog slowly lifts, the dire nature of her circumstances becomes increasingly clear-trapped, hundreds of miles from home, with her baby left to the care of strangers. She must make it back. But standing in her way are endless coils of razor wire, armed guards, hostile inmates, an indifferent judicial system, and quite possibly her greatest obstacle . . . herself.

Advance praise for Apertures of Voluptuous Force: Sam Barbee opens a portal on a world in tumult, storms inside and out, and invites us to "pet my feral dread." Observation of daily life call forth a maximalist esthetic, a riot in language, images detonating against each other. In poetry of paradox and opposition, Barbee seeks the balm of nature, but finds it lurking only at the edges of devastation, like a lone crayfish at a pool's edge after the hurricane. Timely in its use of colloquial language and touchstones such as masks and ADHD, these poems warn "we have all given consent" to horror of the modern day, yet in broken landscapes we can sometimes find ourselves in "a pleat of bliss." -Valerie Neiman author of In the Lonely Backwater and Leopard Lady: A Life in VerseSam Barbee's Apertures of Voluptuous Force is a stunning collection of lush, unforgettable, and well-crafted poems. I often found myself re-reading a line or a whole stanza again simply for the sheer pleasure of the words Barbee chose and arranged so beautifully. The sonic typology alone of the poems is impressive, and his range of topics, expansive. Witness Barbee's skill in a few lines from the poem Lumens: "Infused in owl's/screech, midnight, explicit with stars, /clad in joules, blinks as it releases/comets and Aurora Borealis. Tinkling, /the tickled world stares back." Barbee is all of this and a sense of humor, such as in the poem Body Neutral in which the speaker states, "My body: /the podgy regent." Who could resist this book? I'll be coming back for more as these poems deserve a third or fourth reading.-Malika King-Albrecht, author of The Stumble Fields and editor of Redheaded StepchildFor years I have watched Sam Barbee's progression as a poet as his lens widened, his sentences growing with vibrant imagery, each poem flashing open with a vital story only he can see. He writes like a director orchestrates a film; and I am always keen to see where he places his camera, what flushes up in his singular vision, what relationships he has discovered and sharpened by his engagement with the world. An aperture can be defined as the opening in a lens through which light passes to enter the camera. A poem's power and motion are regulated by the amount of restraint allowed to pour the right words in the right order, lending light in its engagement with the reader. Barbee's mastery as a poet is cinematic, his poems are indeed Apertures of Voluptuous Force, and as you make your way through their various musical frames you may also find they have opened new and unforgettable vistas in your imagination.--Keith Flynn, author of The Skin of Meaning, Prosperity Gospel, and editor of The Asheville Poetry Review About the AuthorSam Barbee has three collections of poetry. His two most recent are Uncommon Book of Prayer (2021, Main Street Rag), and That Rain We Needed (2016, Press 53), which was a nominee for the Roanoke-Chowan Award as one of North Carolina's best poetry collections of 2016. His poems have appeared recently in Poetry South, Literary Yard, Asheville Poetry Review, Appalachian Journal, and Adelaide Literary Magazine, among others; plus on-line journals American Diversity Report, Exquisite Pandemic, The Voices Project, and Medusa's Kitchen. He is a two-time Pushcart nominee; was awarded an "Emerging Artist's Grant" from the Winston-Salem Arts Council to publish his first collection Changes of Venue (1997, Mount Olive Press); has been a featured poet on the North Carolina Public Radio Station WFDD; received the 59th Poet Laureate Award from the North Carolina Poetry Society for his poem "The Blood Watch".

An innocent photo outing, a very stiff dead body, and more surprises than the words in a song. Wouldn't you know it? The one time my cousin, Glinda, and her fiancé, decide to go camping (I know right), I stumble upon a dead body in some abandon farm house. Turns out the guy was some famous singer who quit the music business ten years ago.I would have let the sheriff handle the investigation, except that the body was in a rather strange condition, which implied magic was involved. That's where I come in. Okay, the sheriff really wanted my cousin to help since she is a sleuth and a witch, but she wasn't in town, so guess what? I was asked to help investigate. Yes, I'm a witch too, but my talents extend mostly to mind reading and an occasional séance. No murder mystery would be complete without Iggy, and a few other helpers-like my ghost friends Bella and Lorenzo. If you want to see how we solved the crime, just come to the Pink Iguana Sleuths' office in Witch's Cove, Florida to chat.

As a micro-epic The Pit, and No Other Stories has a little of everything: small town American gothic, hard-boiled detective noir, spy thriller, Hollywood drama, folklore, science fiction, historical fiction, surrealism, horror gore, punk romance, and satire of American capitalism and consumerism. The Pit, and No Other Stories, might be a familiar reading experience to that of viewing the ABC television program, Lost, or David Lynch's Twin Peaks. Many characters, different story lines, obvious points of connection, some less obvious, and many fun, stage-setting red herrings. The Pit, and No Other Stories contains important themes about the failings of the American Dream, exploitation, and the objectification of human beings, but it also expresses a deep veneration for storytelling, narrative, and the triumph of the human spirit through art.Foreword by Everett Steele IIIAfterword by John Reed> Praise for The Pit and No Other Stories: "The Pit, and No Other Stories is a novella full of histories and ideas. It is a story about the trials and obstacles that fall into our path as we desperately try to unearth the genius within something we deeply care for. The Pit is a journey in it self, a ride with flashes of life and an ending in a place, in a world, you didn't anticipate but because of Rothacker's craftsmanship, you find yourself wholeheartedly accepting."-Melissa Ximena Golebiowski, As It Ought to Be Magazine"These tales are noir jewels born of a celestial meeting between Edgar Allan Poe, Jorge Luis Borges, and Alfred Hitchcock. Mysterious, cinematic, and dark, they draw you in from the first to the last. I read breathlessly to find out comes next, and in every case, what came next was a challenge to my own best guess. The superb, taut writing emits a vapor of menace and delight. About one of his clients' accent a private eye in an early story tells us, "It sounded more of a class than a geography." About these stories I feel almost the same-they are unique, in a class of their own, yet situated firmly in a geography bounded by the above-mentioned masters of suspense."-Andrei Codrescu, author of Whatever Gets You Through the Night: a Story of Sheherezade and The Posthuman Dada Guide: Tzara and Lenin Play Chess"Overall, fans of works such as David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas, Philip K. Dick's writing or shows such as Lost and True Detective will find it easy to connect to Rothacker's Pit. You'll find a Star Wars reference and shades of The X-Files. The Pit, and No Other Stories utilizes elements of the mystical without becoming obtuse, and the philosophical themes juxtapose nicely with the more fantastical scenes. The manipulations and connections of the characters create moments of true tenderness that are often punctuated by tragedy, a place where magic intersects with the stark reality of what it is to be human."-Andrea Boyd, The Athens Banner-Herald"Part of the joy of reading The Pit, and No Other Stories is seeing how these seemingly disparate threads come together-which often happens in unexpected ways." - Tobias Carroll, The Brooklyn Rail

As noted in our description for Franklin Family History, 1st Edition, this booklet is a comprehensive genealogical study of our branch of the Franklin family. We've traced our history from Robert Franklin, born 1425 in Skipton-upon-Craven, Yorkshire, England, to modern-day U.S.A. Since the publication of that first edition, I have had the opportunity to travel to Kelshall, England to see the home of my ancestor, the first Reverend Edward Franklin (1548-1617). My notes and photos from the trip are contained in the chapters following our ancestral line. We've also included additional information generously provided by the historian of St. Faith's Church in Kelshall, Mr. Peter Gartside. Mr. Gartside's work provides a richer picture of the history and circumstances that would have affected Edward and his family as they lived and worked in the tiny English village. Additionally, we've included a chapter discussing the origin and design of the coat of arms for our specific branch of the Franklin family, one of only four branches of the Franklin family upon whom a coat of arms was bestowed.

Grab a microphone and turn up the volume.Moving from Hawai'i to Fresno in seventh grade changed Adrienne Robillard's view of the world, herself, and her future. Being a new kid in a new school meant hours of time alone spent listening to cassette tapes and college radio, learning to play the guitar, and writing stories and lyrics. Joining a garage band in high school gave her a sense of belonging she'd never realized possible as she wrote songs with strangers who became treasured friends-one of whom she ended up marrying. Maps and Tapes follows Robillard from San Francisco to the UK, criss-crossing the US and Europe, feeling at home in a van on both sides of the road.In Fresno, "I went from having friends and blending in to being a loner who kept getting asked, 'What are you?' because I was one of a few half-Asian students at Ahwahnee Middle School," she recalls. "With my headphones on, I could ignore uncomfortable questions." Later, music became her primary creative outlet and a way for her not to hide, but to connect. In Maps and Tapes, Robillard interweaves lyrics written for her indie-rock bands between stories of first guitar lessons, young love, adventures in studying abroad, and gigging and touring with her bands. Her poignant prose paints a vivid portrait of the ways in which music soundtracked and shaped her teen and young adult years. Her callouts of favorite bands, albums, and songs will make readers want to cue up their own nostalgic playlists-good and loud, to be felt in the bones, the way the best music and memories should. The Hali'a Aloha Series publishes personal essays, memoir, poetry and prose. The series celebrates moments big and small, harnessing the power of short forms to preserve the lived experiences of the storytellers.
