Written and edited by a group of experts in the field, this groundbreaking reference work sets the standard for engineers, students, and professionals working with power converters, drives, and controls, offering the scientific community a way towards combating sustainable operations. The future of energy and power generation is complex. Demand is increasing, and the demand for cleaner energy and electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing with it. With this increase in demand comes an increase in the demand for power converters. Part one of this book is on switched-mode converters and deals with the need for power converters, their topologies, principles of operation, their steady-state performance, and applications. Conventional topologies like buck, boost, buck-boost converters, inverters, multilevel inverters, and derived topologies are covered in part one with their applications in fuel cells, photovoltaics (PVs), and EVs. Part two is concerned with electrical machines and converters used for EV applications. Standards for EV, charging infrastructure, and wireless charging methodologies are addressed. The last part deals with the dynamic model of the switched-mode converters. In any DC-DC converter, it is imperative to control the output voltage as desired. Such a control may be achieved in a variety of ways. While several types of control strategies are being evolved, the popular method of control is through the duty cycle of the switch at a constant switching frequency. This part of the book briefly reviews the conventional control theory and builds on the same to develop advanced techniques in the closed-loop control of switch mode power converters (SMPC), such as sliding mode control, passivity-based control, model predictive control (MPC), fuzzy logic control (FLC), and backstepping control. A standard reference work for veteran engineers, scientists, and technicians, this outstanding new volume is also a valuable introduction to new hires and students. Useful to academics, researchers, engineers, students, technicians, and other industry professionals, it is a must-have for any library.

A practical and insightful discussion of time-frequency analysis methods and technologiesTime-frequency analysis of seismic signals aims to reveal the local properties of nonstationary signals. The local properties, such as time-period, frequency, and spectral content, vary with time, and the time of a seismic signal is a proxy of geologic depth. Therefore, the time-frequency spectrum is composed of the frequency spectra that are generated by using the classic Fourier transform at different time positions.Different time-frequency analysis methods are distinguished in the construction of the local kernel prior to using the Fourier transform. Based on the difference in constructing the Fourier transform kernel, this book categorises time-frequency analysis methods into two groups: Gabor transform-type methods and energy density distribution methods. This book systematically presents time-frequency analysis methods, including technologies which have not been previously discussed in print or in which the author has been instrumental in developing. In the presentation of each method, the fundamental theory and mathematical concepts are summarised, with an emphasis on the engineering aspects. This book also provides a practical guide to geophysicists who attempt to generate geophysically meaningful time-frequency spectra, who attempt to process seismic data with time-dependent operations for the fidelity of nonstationary signals, and who attempt to exploit the time-frequency space seismic attributes for quantitative characterisation of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

This succinct book is unique in that it covers topics starting from the very basics of probability theory leading up to applications in (equilibrium) statistical physics, quantum theory and complex systems. The overarching aim of the book is to present probabilistic concepts, in a way accessible to physics undergraduates and with applications in physics in mind. The book is split into three parts: Part I: Fundamentals - The starting point of the book will present basic concepts in probability theory including discussions about general motivation, the difficulties in dealing with probabilities and a number of basic examples. This part will include some of the general mathematical concepts underpinning probability theory. This will be followed by a discussion of joint probabilities and topics relating to Bayes theorem. Lastly I will discuss how computers generate (pseudo-) random numbers, a topic which is key in any modern view on random processes for physicists. Part II: Specific probability distributions - The second part of the book will focus on the probability distributions most important for applications in physics including discussions about the Central Limit Theorem, the Gaussian distribution, Poissonian distributions and the connection with exponential random variables. Chapters on Levy flights, selfsimilarity, power law distributions (including applications) and on extreme value statistics (e.g. Gumbel and Weibull distributions) will complete Part II of the book. Part III: Applications in and beyond physics - The final part of the book will explore specific applications of random process modelling in physics and in selected adjacent disciplines, specifically applications in quantum theory, viewed specifically from the perspective of random processes and probability theory. Chapters will contain a derivation of the standard ensembles of classical statistical physics, from the point of view of information theory. This is then extended to quantum statistical physics and density matrices. Finally we will discuss simple Markov chains and Monte Carlo simulations, as well as applications of probability theory to a selected set of topics in complex systems. These will be described at a level suitable for undergraduate students in the first and second year.

An intriguing account of a woman at the heart of world politics, half a century before women had the vote The world was at a point of transition between the Victorian age and the modern world of the twentieth century. The Ottoman Empire was in decline, the European states were jostling for power in Africa, industrialization and the coming of the railway age had transformed society and the working man and woman were starting to fight for their right to education, suffrage and a better way of life. Mary Gladstone was daughter and private secretary to William Gladstone, the eminent Liberal Prime Minister of the later Victorian age. Throughout the 1880s and 1890s she was at the heart of British politics, campaigning for her father, dealing with official correspondence and controlling access to the Prime Minister as well as disseminating and controlling information from the PM both to the press and to his ministers. This biography of Mary focuses on the period during which she was working with her father up to his death in 1898. It covers a crucial period in British history including Gladstone's attempts to give home rule to Ireland, brinkmanship in the Balkans, the height of the Empire and domestic reform such as universal male suffrage and elementary education for all. Sheila Gooddie is now a full time writer and author of two previous books. * An insight into the workings of politics in the final years of the Victorian era and at the height of the days of Empire * Adds a different perspective on William Gladstone, a giant of the Victorian age * Based on private letters as well as official documentation

Multiscale Structural Mechanics provides a unified approach for composites modelling based on the representative structure element. After introducing the basic knowledge in vectors and tensors, continuum mechanics, micromechanics and structural mechanics, this concept is introduced and applied to construct micromechanics models and structural mechanics for beams, plates, and shells. This book fills the gap of rigorously bridging micromechanics and structural mechanics. The structural models remain the same as simple engineering models, however with the accuracy comparable to more complex theories. A general-purpose constitutive modelling code also accompanies the book to provide practical tools for engineers to efficiently and accurately model composites.
