Plant polyphenols are specialized metabolites that constitute one of the most common and widespread groups of natural products. They are essential plant components for adaptation to the environment and possess a large and diverse range of biological functions that provide many benefits to both plants and humans. Polyphenols, from their structurally simplest forms to their oligo/polymeric versions (i.e. tannins and lignins), are phytoestrogens, plant pigments, antioxidants, and structural components of the plant cell wall. The interactions between tannins and proteins are involved in plant defense against predation, cause astringency in foods and beverages, and affect the nutritional and health properties of human and animal food plants. This eighth volume of the highly regarded Recent Advances in Polyphenol Research series is edited by Juha-Pekka Salminen, Kristiina Wähälä, Victor de Freitas, and Stéphane Quideau, and brings together chapters written by some of the leading experts working in the polyphenol sciences today. Topics covered include:* Structure, reactivity and synthesis* Bioactivity and bioavailability* Metabolomics, targeted analysis and big data* Quality control & standardization* Biogenesis and functions in plants and ecosystems* Biomaterials & applied sciencesDistilling the most recent and illuminating data available, this new volume is an invaluable resource for chemists, biochemists, plant scientists, pharmacognosists and pharmacologists, biologists, ecologists, food scientists and nutritionists.

Aortic Valve Transcatheter InterventionCalcific aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common heart valve anomaly, with a largely age-dependent prevalence, a calculated annual incidence rate in the range of 4-5% in general populations and up to 6% in patients aged 75 years and over.Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) was previously the only option available to patients with symptomatic, severe aortic stenosis. After the first-in-human transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) was performed by Alain Cribier in 2002, the treatment strategy for patients with symptomatic AS has been revolutionized. Since then, TAVI has grown exponentially, as a result of accruing evidence demonstrating safety and efficacy, and reduced invasiveness compared with SAVR. TAVI devices are continuously expanding to include several valve design options. As this strategy is continuously evolving to treat younger patients and lower-risk populations, aside from the long-term durability of the valve systems, procedural safety will become the focus of newer-generation devices. This book is a practical handbook devoted to the optimization of TAVI procedures, through a focused containment of complications. Through an integrated evaluation of the clinical status, imaging techniques and laboratory findings, the authors provide readers with clear messages on preventive and therapeutic recommendations.

An unprecedented work on contemporary art as viewed through a global lens, offering cutting-edge ideas for decolonizing the art world and its global communityA Companion to Contemporary Art in a Global Framework explores the ways the fine arts, performing arts, curation, cultural studies, and art history have attempted to situate themselves in a more global framework. Offering analyses of the successes and setbacks of those aiming to globalize the art world, this innovative volume presents a new and exciting way of considering art in its global contexts. Essays by an international panel of leading scholars and practicing artists assert that what we talk about as 'art' is essentially a Western concept, thus any attempts at understanding art in a global framework requires a revising of established conceptual definitions.Organized into three sections, this work first reviews the history and theory of the visual arts since 1980 and introduces readers to the emerging area of scholarship that seeks to place contemporary art in a global framework. The second section traces the progression of recent developments in the art world, including the voices of scholars as well as artists in exploring the significance of each of the four decades since 1980. The final section addresses a wide range of key themes in contemporary art over this period, such as the fundamental institutions and ontologies of art practice, and the interactions between art, politics, and the public sphere. This exciting new work:* Offers offer a wholly new approach to methods for exploring global dimensions of art* Covers many fields of the contemporary visual art world, including performance art, public art, curation, and archiving* Analyses the grounding of art and its institutions in European colonialism, along with parallel structures of Western capitalism, imperialism, and nationalism* Discusses the challenges encountered by scholars and artists who have attempted to globalize the art world as related to indigeneity, gender, sexuality, race, colonialism, ethnicity, and diasporaA Companion to Contemporary Art in a Global Framework is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, researchers, and general readers interested in exploring global art beyond the traditional Euro-American context.
