"This volume, in my view, should prove to be a landmark publication. Farreras and her colleagues have thrown available light onto what will prove to be a rich field of historical research and historically informed science policy."- Wade E. Pickren, Journal of the History of the Behavioral SciencesThis volume breaks new ground in assessing the intramural research conducted at the United States National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness (today the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) in the 1950s. The research conducted in these institutes was pioneering and laid the foundation for current neuroscience and behavioural research. Dr. Ingrid Farreras uses the records of the time and also oral histories conducted with retired institute scientists to present the institutional context in which the research was conducted. Topics in her discussion include the history of the United States Public Health Service, the creation of the two institutes at the National Institutes of Health, the organization of their extramural and intramural research programs, and brief summaries of the research that the fifteen laboratories and branches of both institutes conducted during the 1950s. Twelve noted scientists involved in neurological and mental health research then provide their unique, first-hand accounts of their experiences at the NIH. The volume also contains four appendices providing information about the organizational structure of the two institutes, the scientists who worked there, citations of illustrative landmark papers that were published based on their research, and selected primary and secondary resources related to the history of these institutes. The aim of the volume is to foster continuing additional descriptive and analytical research on the history of biomedical sciences in the areas of neurology and mental health in the mid twentieth century.
Drawing on research in the social sciences, communications and other fields, this book analyzes how the online environment is influencing the experience of psychology.
An introduction to the methodology and practice of analysis, design and implementation of distributed health information systems. It includes a special section dedicated to security and interoperability of such systems as well as to advanced electronic health record approaches.
This volume provides an in-depth analysis of knowledge modelling technology, illustrating the main tenets of this paradigm, surveying the state of the art and then presenting in detail the application of this technology to parametric design problems.
This text examines the current situation and trends in the use of health informatics and telematics in Africa and Latin America. It is intended to provide an understanding of the opportunities in health informatics for the advancement of technical co-operation between Europe and developing regions.
This text provides rationales for virtual reality's applicability in clinical psychology. It reviews the relevant literature regarding theoretical and pragmatic issues for these applications, and provides descriptions of ongoing work developed world-wide.
Provides a detailed overview of Inductive Logic Programming, as well as a collection of technical contributions to it. This overview is based on the ESPRIT basic research project no 6020 on Inductive Logic Programming. It is useful for students, researchers and practitioners of artificial intelligence and computer science.
Collected Essays on Best Practices and Lessons Learned. Since the end of the Cold War, numerous conflicts have emerged within the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian space which have affected international relations and highlighted the need for effective strategies for conflict resolution and management. This book presents papers delivered at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop ARW, Best Practices and Lessons Learned in Conflict Management, held in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, in June 2015. The authors of these texts are recognized authorities within their fields of expertise. Issues raised by the conflict in Ukraine were the main focus
Lecture Articles for Students of Architecture Delft 19922015 Nottingham 20052011. This book is a collection of articles written in recent years and used in lectures for students at the Faculty of Architecture at Delft and at Nottingham University. The lectures and articles are based on a mixture of innovations in academia and industry. They elucidate the relationship between architecture and building technology, as well as high technology, transfer of technology, innovative design, development and research in the Chair of Product Development at TU Delft. With his experience in both industry and academia, Eekhouts goal is to bridge the
Seventy percent of our planet is covered by water, and even in todays world of instant communication the global community is still heavily reliant on sea-based transport. The maritime domain has always been one of NATOs key strengths, but concerns about maritime security have taken on renewed importance in recent years, and NATO has been forced to re-examine some of its fundamental assumptions about the post Cold War security environment. This book shares some of the research, debates and findings from a NATO Advanced Research Workshop ARW Building Trust to Enhance Maritime Security, held in Geneva, Switzerland, in November 2014.
Around the world, healthcare planners and governments are engaged in activities to stimulate innovation and reform health systems as part of the drive to deliver safe, effective, quality care to patients. ICT is both a critical component of health system innovation and key stimulus for reform. This book presents papers from the 23rd Australian national Health Informatics Conference HIC 2015, held in Brisbane, Australia, in August 2015. The conference brings together researchers, industry groups and healthcare providers from Australia and around the world to share cutting edge research, technology updates and innovations, and the papers
This book contributes to a better understanding of what makes people and communities resilient in the face of disasters, violence and terrorism. This resilience is understood as a resource that facilitates recovery, effective functioning and positive outcomes in the wake of major critical events that threaten the well-being of individuals, families, communities and nations. The chapters in this publication present complementary perspectives on resilience in a variety of socially adverse settings and how to assess resilience beyond the level of an individual. The contributing authors not only consider evidence of resilience in the
Within the last three decades, information modelling and knowledge bases have become essential subjects, not only for academic communities related to information systems and computer science, but also for businesses where information technology is applied. This book presents the proceedings of EJC 2014, the 24th International Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases, held in Kiel, Germany, in June 2014. The main themes of the conference were conceptual modelling, including modelling and specification languages, domain specific conceptual modelling, and validating and communicating conceptual models knowledge
Water fascinating in all its phases, forms and states of aggregation. Without it, life as we know it would not exist on Earth, for as Paracelsus stated in the 16th century water is the matrix of the world and of all its creatures. While it may appear to be a simple molecule, there is still much about it which is not fully understood. What is notably lacking is a microscopically-based understanding of the reasons for the many anomalous properties of water. This book presents lectures from the Enrico Fermi summer school Water fundamentals as the basis for understanding the environment and promoting technology held in Varenna,
