A Family Tells their Story of Challenge and Resilience from Slavery to the Present. "...and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless themselves."   (Genesis 28:14)My ancestors, born into slavery, suffered one of the most horrific cruelties against humanity ever recorded.  Their determination to survive and to succeed, despite the atrocities inflicted against them, has deeply inspired my life''s journey.  To cope with their suffering, they sustained a deep and abiding faith in a God who could deliver them in this world and prepare them for the next.  They endured their plight but never gave up the struggle or the hope for liberation and freedom.Throughout my life, I have been deeply committed to the search for our family''s history, identity, and legacy.  This commitment has grown out of the tremendous respect and love for my ancestors who gave so much to the fabric of their New World.  Once freed, they became outstanding citizens and gave extraordinary service in many areas of American life.Today, their stories of enslavement are no longer untold struggles of a determined people.  Their stories have evolved to include the successes and accomplishments of generations of outstanding descendants in a land that once enslaved them.  It is with pride that I offer this book to tell their stories and to offer our gratitude because it is upon their shoulders that we now stand.

While working on another writing project, an epiphany occurred which led to this book. Although I have read both John the Baptist''s and Jesus'' statements about repentance and the kingdom of heaven many times, I became intrigued that both used the same phrase to describe how one prepares to experience the spiritual blessings of that divine realm - "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."The longer I pondered its meaning, the more I understood the enormous challenge Jesus faced in transforming the historic religious attitudes of Israel. Repentance was not solely about ceasing prior bad behavior. Instead, its greater meaning involved turning away from self-righteousness under the ancient legal codes of Israel and turning to righteousness based on faith in the redemptive life and work of Jesus alone. In order to accomplish that, centuries of deeply entrenched religious legal standards, traditions of the elders, social standards and attitudes, and the very order of Jewish society would have to change. It would involve the greatest physical challenge and the greatest danger one could face, but the spiritual rewards would also be the greatest anyone could experience.Given the spiritual importance of repentance, it seemed logical that Jesus would have woven its meaning into all of His teaching. This inquiry led to a deeper study of the Sermon on the Mount and to the discovery of a treasure trove of spiritual truths regarding repentance. This project has been both spiritually and physically challenging. It has been the focus of my attention and interest for a long while and has involved many hours of study and writing. The challenge seemed endless at times, but it resulted in a broader and deeper understanding of this vital spiritual concept.I am indebted to many friends and family members for their encouragement and help. I am especially grateful to Jeffery McClendon who edited the original draft and offered many insightful comments and suggestions regarding both content and style.I do not consider myself a biblical scholar, nor am I adept with either Hebrew or Greek.  The resources which I used were no greater than those available to any biblical student. Bible references are from the New King James translation, and word meanings were derived from a Hebrew-Greek study bible, Vine''s Expository Dictionary, and several computer based resources. Word references are basic without any significant effort to explore their wider meanings and nuances. Christianity is a deeply personal spiritual experience applicable to all believers equally. However, throughout this book I used masculine gender nouns and pronouns as a traditional means of expression, and for simplicity in writing, to describe both Christianity''s universal impact on mankind and its personal transformation of individual Christians. The reader should understand that no racial, ethnic, or gender disparity is intended. I did not intend to write a scholarly treatise, but rather a direct, common-sense examination of the importance of repentance in the birth and development of the Christian faith. I hope it is meaningful.

Life in France (indeed, life anywhere) evolves, unfolds. Even the best of plans are not exempt from the unexpected. And sometimes those events are not only beyond our control but also often beyond our wildest imagination. In the first book, A Bright Sun & Long Shadows I gave an account of the glorious and the gruesome events of the first four years of establishing our new life in France. Most popular works in the genres of international living, cross cultural adjustment, and life transitions seem to stop after an apparent success has been established in the story line, as if such an adjustment to life was now complete, the chapter closed and "they live happily ever after". I believe that, often, there is an unconscious need, on the part of author and reader alike, to establish this "Happy-Ever-After" ending as permanent; a static state once reached, forever achieved, much like childhood images in fairy tales, or a heaven of harps, angels on floating clouds and that final reunion with long lost loved ones. There''s a part of me that believes this is necessary for our personal short-term satisfaction. Such myths make life more bearable than the inevitable uncertainties that, in fact, we experience as life rolls along past the end of the most recent "last" chapter and into the realities that come next. The future reveals itself, emerging from nearly indistinguishable forms illuminated by slivers of moonlight, hopes to rise with the dawn, then, at last seen more clearly in the starkness of a noonday sun only to advance to twilight, dusk, darkness and another dawn. In the long-haul of life, and in the inevitability of growing older one learns that, while that Genesis myth is true, "in the beginning all was good"; if we also live long enough we know that life is not static, nor is this originally created goodness invulnerable to the many hard knocks that continue long after that first garden is created, then grows, as the future becomes present and many presents in turn pass by. In the Judeo-Christian context of my faith, I witness that part of our human nature is, after all, a myth of our beginnings over and over, book after book, chapter after chapter of the rise and fall of life. This is the stuff of which life stories are made, and such it is with this volume as a sequel to the first book, A Bright Sun and Long Shadows.  Indeed, after the first four years, we thought that we had "made it" through the worst of times and looked forward with a Robert Browning attitude, of the best yet ahead of us.    Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be,The last of life, for which the first was made:Our times are in His hand who saith "A whole I planned, Youth shows but half;trust God: see all, nor be afraid!" -Robert Browning

After decades of ecclesial warfare over LGBTQ people, the dust is finally beginning to settle: by and large, mainline Protestant churches are blessing same-gender unions and ordaining LGBTQ people for ministry. Now, many are wondering what difference it will make. How will the decision to affirm LGBTQ people play out in the lives of churches? How will newly-ordained LGBTQ ministers affect the future of the faith? Will things change? Will things stay the same?Yes.I am an openly gay man who has served as the solo pastor of a small Presbyterian church in New Jersey since July 2016. So far as I can tell, I am the first openly LGBTQ pastor of any church in the area. With the dust still settling around my feet, I have stepped into a calling that feels much bigger than me, and I have been asking these kinds of questions along the way. It was through preaching the sermons in this collection that I found my way to Yes.None of these sermons (except for perhaps the first one) are explicitly about being gay or about LGBTQ issues. And yet, my experiences and perspective as an LGBTQ person are infused into every sermon that I write-and, really, into everything that I create. Though the nature of the infusion varies from sermon to sermon and from circumstance to circumstance, I cannot help but carry my queerness into every single day of my calling. The same is true, I believe, for other LGBTQ ministers and LGBTQ people of faith. Our queerness has blessed and will continue to bless both our faith and our world. Sometimes, the blessing will look different from what people are used to. Sometimes, it will stretch, even rattle them. Other times, the blessing will look and feel perfectly familiar-like it has always belonged in our faith. The organization of these sermons is loosely chronological and loosely thematic. After each set of three sermons, I have included a poem that I wrote in the past year. The inclusion of my poetry bears witness to personal experiences behind the sermon writing. Over the course of that first year, I felt an abundance of support from within my congregation and a sea of opposition and chaos beyond it. Several members of my partner''s family disowned him. Three rainbow flags were stolen from establishments in our small town. Donald Trump rose to power, and with him a horde of anti-LGBTQ forces. During this time, I wrote sermons to guide my congregation, and I wrote poems to guide me.For those of you who are not LGBTQ, I pray that this book helps you to notice and celebrate the myriad ways in which LGBTQ people are blessing our faith and our world. For those of you who are LGBTQ, I pray that this book furthers your assurance that you are free, you are clean, and you are loved. At the end of the day, every day, I''m doing this for you.

This book is written in the style of the great Napoleon Hill. Think about this. With all of the success books out there, why don''t we have more successful people? Too many success books simply rehash conventional wisdom. The truly great success books, such as Napoleon Hill''s "Think and Grow Rich", instead enable life-challenging success breakthroughs because they identify and describe in powerful detail the thinking patterns and principles of the world''s most successful individuals. The only way to do this is to study the world''s most successful individuals, as Napoleon Hill has done. And as I have done as well. For over two decades, I have devoted myself to studying and interviewing the most successful individuals across varying fields so that I could see and learn for myself the principles which sets them apart in terms of their success. And that is what I share with you here. Get ready to throw out many of the things that you thought you knew about success. Let''s start at the beginning with a simple truth. Success is hard. Very Hard. Very very very hard. We all know that, once we have had a little bit of experience and are honest with ourselves. We all want to be more successful, but let''s face it, sometimes we just don''t know how. It''s because, as they say, "We don''t know what we don''t know." So we make the same mistakes over and over again(often without fully realizing it until later). And then we blame ourselves(or others) in regard to why things didn''t turn out as we had hoped, or planned. It''s this simple. If you want to increase your level of success, read this book. We all go through the same struggles. This book-simply but powerfully - is your instruction manual on how to overcome them. Read this book and in 60 days you won''t even recognize the person you used to be. And neither will your family and friends. This is the type of change that allows you to get the things you really want in life. The things previously outside your reach. The things you saw others gain and achieve, but never seemed to be able to get for yourself. That can change today. We all know that a few better ideas can accelerate one''s success substantially. Successful people take their better ideas and know how to leverage them further - and execute them better than other people do. Once you understand the processes that successful people utilize to do this, you can very quickly ramp up your own success as well. Everybody struggles. Successful people struggle just like unsuccessful people but they learn and use the success principles to overcome the difficulties in their lives to reach their goals. Success breeds confidence, making it easier overtime. If you don''t want to keep making the same mistakes over and over again, you need to understand and understand well  what these success principles are. That is what this book provides to you.

Ronald Fino, one of the FBI''s foremost undercover operatives, does not scare easily. That is why he''s not afraid to name names in this undercover exposé. He learned how they control members of Congress and local officials as well as their ties to presidents, politicians, and law enforcement officials. But working to bring mob members to justice and exposing political corruption wasn''t enough for Fino. He also managed to infiltrate the Russian Mafia, made underground contact with Muslim terrorists, and exposed illegal arms smugglers, child porn organizers, narcotics dealers, and international money launderers. It''s all here. It''s all true. And as Ronald Fino says, "It''s not going away anytime soon."

Everything in the physical world is made out of atoms. Atoms are made out of energy. And energy is made out of consciousness. This book shows what reality is made of, how we participate in creating this reality, and how we can create a reality full of love, peace, and joy.Matter and energy do not create Mind. Mind creates matter and energy. When your Mind experiences a sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell, the experiences are coming from the Universal Intelligence. Your individual Mind has the experience. There is no objective reality outside of your Mind that you perceive through energy entering tiny orifices in a material body. This book explains that we are creating this reality together. We are more than brothers and sisters in this life. We are one Mind. The message of this book is that we can live happy, fulfilling lives in which we have love, peace, and joy with all people. We just have to learn the truth that we are spiritual beings having a physical experience in Earth School. Our individual progress in becoming more loving, compassionate, and other-centered advances humankind toward the goal of living together in love, peace, and joy.

These sermons address occasions you don''t hear as much about because of their infrequency and in some cases their uniqueness. They neither addressed texts directly from the Revised Common Lectionary nor preached on high and holy days or seasons. All the same, pastors preach them as I say, In and Out of Every Season. As is true with all sermon volumes, it is a timepiece; in my case stretching over the last twenty years. Here you will find sermons on occasions like weddings, an installation service, launching a building campaign, before a denominational body, introductory sermon before a new congregation, senior high Sunday, introducing a new hymnbook, dedication upon completion of a building program, memorial services, and matters relating thereto. They include sermons that attempt to address concerns and needs of a personal, pastoral and prophetic nature on civic, moral and political realities. Thus, they are both topical and ad hoc; some are more hortatory while others are more didactic in nature. My gratitude is to the congregations I have served: Severn Presbyterian Church, Gloucester County, Virginia; First Presbyterian Church, Virginia Beach, Virginia; Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church, Clinton, NC, and First Presbyterian Church, New Bern, NC, where I''ve spent most of my time in ministry and continue to serve. All proceeds from the sale of this book will go in support of the First Presbyterian Church, New Bern, NC, Bicentennial Fund.My thanks is to my on-site editor and in honor of her memory, Nancy Chiles and to the Rev. Dr. David Russell Tullock of Parson''s Porch Books whose invitation and encouragement to publish these sermons, has been an honor and pleasure.

PERFECT BRAIN FITNESS HAPPY FUN GIFT FOR ANY OCCASION!Keep your brain young! Increase your IQ for success in business, work & love! The average God-given IQ of an adult is 150. The average effective (day-to-day) IQ is only 100-110. Medical science cannot yet increase the God-given IQ. However, we can increase the daily effective IQ by various mental activities among them puzzle solving. Put a puzzle in front of a child and watch what happens. It''s amazing, really. With no explanation or modeling, the child will simply get to work, taking the puzzle apart and putting it back together piece by piece. Children are like this. They run, they jump, they seek out challenges and new experiences, and teach themselves by being playful and curious. At some point though, it''s hard to say exactly when we stop playing. We exercise our bodies and our minds only when we have to, focusing on the results and dreading the process. I created this book of challenging puzzles to help adults return to that state of mind we generally associate with the very young: a place where learning is accomplished in a spirit of play, recreation, and adventure. I created this book because I believe that puzzles of all kinds, whether crosswords, anagrams, or Sudoku puzzles, can remind us to be curious and to see challenges as exciting rather than daunting. Though I''ve written many brain puzzles for children, this is specifically a book for those of us ages 18 and up. It''s a book for the student seeking to improve his English or Math skills; as well as a book for the teacher trying to find new ways to connect her students with the material, or simply for the passenger on the bus; and anyone else who seeks entertaining ways to keep the mind moving and fit. After all, exercise isn''t just about jumping jacks and free-weights. Both our bodies and our minds need and love exercise. Contrary to popular belief our brains are capable of growth (effective IQ) and change throughout our entire lives. It''s easy to underestimate our minds, but so long as we are open to life-long learning as adults, our minds will continue to grow with us. Much has been made of the health benefits of doing complex puzzles. It''s true that many studies have shown that individuals who regularly do crosswords and similar activities have improved memory, improved daily functioning, and less memory loss at advanced ages, as well as the delayed onset and reduced risk of conditions such as Alzheimer''s Disease. That''s all wonderful and is a large part of why I believe fun puzzles are so important, but people have been doing crosswords for far longer than doctors have been prescribing them. The reason for this is simple. We find them enjoyable. My hope for all those who read this book is foremost that you achieve your educational goals, whether you''re trying to improve your spelling by decoding anagrams; sharpen your math skills with multiple operation problems; or hone your sense of detail and analysis by finding the difference between two images in a picture puzzle. But even more than this I hope that you become (if you are not already) a lover of puzzles because to be a lover of puzzles is to be a lover of learning at any age. Go play.Live Life Active, Agile, Bright, Healthy & Happy!

"When this wonderful little book by Warren Bluhm first dropped into my hands a decade ago, I thought it was important. Today, I think it''s particularly vital," Wally Conger writes in the preface to the Tenth Anniversary Edition of Refuse to be Afraid. As Bluhm writes:"You are the boss of you. It''s your life; you have to live with the choices you make; make sure those choices are actually yours."The first step is controlling your fear. Not ''Don''t be scared'' - Don''t let being scared stop you altogether. Question why you''re scared: Is someone trying to scare you, and why? Is it a rational concern that merits moving forward with caution? Are you frightened beyond reason, and if so, what''s a more reasonable course of action?"But move forward. Act. Don''t be paralyzed by the fear."What I meant to say is:"Refuse to be Afraid. Free yourself. Dream."Tired of the fear mongers? Ready to plow through the nagging doubts and outright fears of various sizes and shapes that are keeping you from living your best life? Eager to take the leap into that new job, start that new business, or meet that person you''d really like to know better? What''s keeping you back? This is the challenge before you: Faced with a scary reality, to navigate past the anxiety, refuse to be afraid, and free yourself to move on to your dreams. This revised and expanded edition of Warren Bluhm''s groundbreaking 2010 book is more relevant to our times than ever.

Spaceports & Spidersilk features science fiction and fantasy for everyone.  It presents adventures on other planets and in imaginary worlds.  Inside these pages you''ll find magic, and strange friends, and even a ghost or two.Editor Marcie Tentchoff says:  I have never made a secret of my love of all things speculative, from fantasy to science fiction, from wand-waving wizards to blaster-brandishing space brigands. I love magic, adventure, strange creatures and otherworldly situations.          Now, like many people across Earth, I find myself living in one of those otherworldly, almost science fictional situations. The thing is, although I don''t have access to strange alien tech or magical items that might help me make everything instantly right again, I do have a background in reading about similar scenarios.  And I know from my reading that there is always hope, that things do get better, and that there will always be heroes who step up to make things better.
