  • - The History of the Italian Wars' First Major Battle

    132,-

In 1494, there were five sovereign regional powers in Italy: Milan, Venice, Florence, the Papal States and Naples. In 1536, only one remained: Venice. These decades of conflict precipitated great anxiety among Western thinkers, and Italians responded to the fragmentation, forevermore, of Latin Christendom, the end of self-governance for Italians, and the beginning of the early modern era in a myriad of ways. They were always heavily influenced by the lived experience of warfare between large Christian armies on the peninsula. The diplomatic and military history of this 30-year period was a complex situation that one eminent Renaissance historian, Lauro Martines, has described as "best told by a computer, so many and tangled are the treatises, negotiations and battles." At the same time, the fighting went in tandem with the Renaissance and was influenced by it. Most historians credit the city-state of Florence as the place that started and developed the Italian Renaissance, a process carried out through the patronage and commission of artists during the late 12th century. If Florence is receiving its due credit, much of it belongs to the Medicis, the family dynasty of Florence that ruled at the height of the Renaissance. The dynasty held such influence that some of its family members even became Pope. Lorenzo de Medici may have not been a king, prince or duke, but he nevertheless held significant influence over all of the noble houses of the region, from Milan and Naples to the king of France. Between 1482 and 1484, Lorenzo's influence prevented a close alliance between King Louis IX of France and the city of Venice, which was at war with Ferrara. Lorenzo's personal influence helped reduce Venice's power in the region. During the Baron's War of 1485 and 1486, while Florence sided with the pope, Lorenzo favored Ferdinando of Aragon, who had close ties with Naples, giving Lorenzo the chance to attempt to negotiate an improvement in relations between the pope and Naples. While the two had once been allied against Florence, their alliance had ended with the war. Lorenzo proposed a new agreement between the two, largely centered around financial obligations, in 1489. It was accepted in 1492, creating an enduring peace for some time. Perhaps fittingly, once Lorenzo the Magnificent died, the tenuous peace would go with him, touching off the Italian Wars. Meanwhile, plans for a French invasion were years in the making, and France's young King Charles VIII, heavily influenced by chivalric tales and his men of finance, had begun his preparations for conquering Naples as a base from which to launch a crusade in 1491. Two key events were the catalysts for these plans. The first was the arrival of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere at Avignon in May 1494. The holder of the see at Vincula, Giuliano della Rovere, and Rodrigo Borgia quarreled upon the latter's election to the Papal throne as Pope Alexander VI.[3] After months of intrigue and a failed assassination plot, della Rovere sailed from Ostia to France, where he joined his voice to the chorus inciting Charles VIII to war. Giuliano della Rovere's connections in his native Genoa made him a formidable ally in that he was able to help the French king raise the necessary funds for an invasion from Ligurian moneylenders. The French invasion of Italy in 1494 was shocking to Italian observers both in terms of scale and ferocity, and various Italian powers' attempts to expel the French from the peninsula would culminate with the Battle of Fornovo, which turned out merely to be the first major battle in a long series of conflicts.

  • - The History of the Byzantine Empire's Last Campaign to Take Anatolia from the Seljuk Turks

    146,-

The Byzantine Empire existed for over a thousand years, with a history spanning from the division of the Roman Empire in 395 until the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. It was formed from the previous Eastern Roman Empire, and during its long existence, the Byzantine inhabitants were very proud to call themselves Romans. However, many things changed during the long lifespan of the Byzantine Empire, starting with its Hellenization in the 6th century. The use of the Latin language diminished and Greek took its place, while the typical Roman culture gave way to a more Hellenistic one. The Hellenization of Byzantium was detrimental to the relationship with the Holy Roman Empire, and the Christian world from that point would be split in two. The subsequent strengthening of the Orthodox Church caused many civil wars and conflicts to arise during the centuries, which shattered and reshaped the territory time after time. By the end of the Byzantine Empire's existence, the old age had weakened both the state and church, making it an easy target for invading forces. The most notable invaders were the the Turkish-speaking Seljuks, led through a series of battles by Kutalmishouglu Suleiman, who supported different usurpers against the Byzantine emperor. The expansion of the Seljuks was so successful that when Suleiman died, he had put all of Bithynia under his control as well as several important harbor towns along the shores on the Asian side of Bosphorus. With that accomplishment, he had managed to separate the Byzantines living in Anatolia from their emperor in Constantinople. This immediately weakened the unity of the Byzantine Empire. When another invading Muslim army took control of what is now Syria, Israel, and Northern Africa, the dismembered Byzantine Empire lost significant portions of land, but that allowed it to grow into a smaller and stronger unity. It took a lot of power struggles and battles on many fronts for the empire to recapture some of the lands, but gradually the Byzantine Empire lost all influence in Anatolia. By the end of the 11th century, the Hellenic culture and Greek language were replaced by Islam and Turkish. Of all the conflicts that brought this state of affairs into being, few were as instrumental as the Battle of Kapetron, the culmination of one of the first major Seljuk raids into Byzantine territory. It represented not just a clash of ethnicities, cultures, and religions, but also a harbinger of a changing of the guard, and one that would shape geopolitics in the region for the next several centuries. In the late 11th century, Anatolia was still mostly controlled by the Byzantine Empire. A large force of Turkish tribesmen, having descended from Central Asia, conquered Persia and faced the army of the Byzantines. The ensuing fighting still stirs up powerful emotions in the national psyche, not only in Turkey but amongst Armenians, Greeks, and other ethnicities in the region, as the Byzantine losses at Manzikert and Myriokephalon are now regarded with hindsight as marking the end of Christian hegemony in Asia Minor and the beginning of the rise of Islam as a rival to Christianity.

  • - The History of the Spanish Empire's Participation in the Revolutionary War

    132,-

The American Revolution is replete with seminal moments that every American learns in school, from the "shot heard 'round the world" to the Declaration of Independence, but the events that led up to the fighting at Lexington & Concord were borne out of 10 years of division between the British and their American colonies over everything from colonial representation in governments to taxation, the nature of searches, and the quartering of British regulars in private houses. From 1764-1775, a chain of events that included lightning rods like the Townshend Acts led to bloodshed in the form of the Boston Massacre, while the Boston Tea Party became a symbol of nonviolent protest. The political and military nature of the Revolutionary War was just as full of intrigue. While disorganized militias fought the Battles of Lexington & Concord, George Washington would lead the Continental Army in the field while men like Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia and Benjamin Franklin negotiated overseas in France. French forces would play a crucial role at the end of the war, and the Treaty of Paris would conclude the Revolution with one last great surprise. The British surrender at Yorktown marked the end of major operations during the conflict, and many are familiar with the major role the French forces played there, and the extent of France's participation in general, but few know the extent of other countries' participation in the American Revolution. Among the other European powers, few had as big an influence in the Americas as Spain, and the Spanish Empire, though declining by the late 18th century, still possessed colonial holdings in the region. In fact, through political intrigue and past military efforts, the Spanish would have a say across much of the future United States during this period, from Florida to New Orleans, and all of it impacted American history over the coming decades after the Revolutionary War ended.

William, a tirelessly dedicated detective in London, leads a quartet of agents through the city's labyrinth of crime, navigating a landscape where law enforcement has been privatized and criminal activities have consolidated power. London, once a bustling metropolis, now teeters on the brink of chaos. The outsourcing of police services has left a vacuum filled by a monopoly of crime, plunging the city into a state of disorder. Amidst this turmoil, society has reached a zenith of leisure, with boredom permeating every corner, sparking an unprecedented wave of criminal innovation. Caught in the crossfire are two distinct factions: the crime catchers, led by William, and the criminals themselves, each vying not just for survival but for the sheer triumph of victory. William finds himself stretched to his limits, battling a dwindling cache of resources as the tentacles of crime extend further into the heart of London. Amidst this dire scenario, the city faces a new horror-cannibalism, a grim testament to the depths to which humanity can sink in its darkest times. As William doggedly pursues the city's most elusive murderer, a contrasting narrative unfolds. Amelia, a figure of grace and power, navigates the upper echelons of society within the deceptively secure enclaves of London's seedy underbelly. Her world thrives on the opulence and intrigue of the salons in the city's most privileged quarters, untouched by the chaos that engulfs the streets outside. This dual narrative paints a vivid picture of a city at war with itself, where the battle lines are drawn not just in the shadowy alleys and dimly lit streets, but within the very soul of its inhabitants. As William and his team wage a relentless fight against the forces of darkness, the question remains: can the spirit of London survive this onslaught, or will it be consumed by the very shadows it seeks to vanquish?
