Wurts before The National Society Magna Charta Dames meeting around the original Magna Charta in the British Pavilion, New York World's Fair, October 10, 1939. "The story of Magna Charta is indeed a Romance: It is a blending of the heroic, the marvelous and the mysterious, the full significance of which only the imagination can grasp. It is wonderful in its history. It transcends the ordinary. Hence it is a Romance. But who were the heroes? And what was their marvelous achievement?"Part II: Pedigrees of the Barons contains individual chapters devoted to sureties, which include the family Arms, a list of persons who may claim descent, and varying amounts of genealogical and biological information. Other chapters present: an English translation of the Magna Charta, Queen Boadicea and the Druids, Old King Cole, The Frankish Kings, Clovis and Magister Palatii, The Saxon Kings, Alfred the Great, Charlemagne, The Scottish Kings, King Robert Bruce, The Normans, William the Conqueror, Provence, Castile, King Edward I, King Edward II, King Edward III, The Order of the Garter, The Original Knight Companions, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cyrus Holloway, First Supplement, Second Supplement, Acknowledgements and Bibliography, and The Grandin Family.A wealth of family crests and other illustrations, and a surname index add to the value of this work.

When Anne Ammundsen decided to pursue her family history, an extraordinary story on her maternal line dropped into her lap. She soon found herself up against George Washington's account of the 1782 "Asgill Affair"; but with the discovery of a hitherto unknown letter by British officer Charles Asgill, written two and a half centuries earlier, she knew that her life's purpose was to challenge the records, and set them straight. She has had several articles published, but this book gives her the opportunity to cover the wider story.George Washington's reputation meant a lot to him, and he went to great lengths to preserve it for posterity. Unfortunately, he did so at the expense of the reputation of a young British officer, who has been regarded as a scoundrel ever since. Washington could not have known that Charles Asgill's descendant would turn up to ensure the reputation of this officer was restored, by using primary sources to set the record straight. As will be seen on the pages of this book, Asgill honoured his family motto: Sui Oblitus Commodi (regardless of his own interests). And, as Washington once wrote: Truth will ultimately prevail where pains is taken to bring it to light.Numerous illustrations, nine appendices, a bibliography, and an index to full-names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.

The Channel Islands, primarily Guernsey and Jersey, contributed greatly to the influx of immigrants to the American colonies and the young United States, but the Island emigrants generally receive little attention from genealogists as a distinct ethnic group. In the beginning, they contributed important fishing and ship-building skills, but now their descendants are found in all walks of life. They were so numerous, and so widely dispersed among the colonies, that it is probably safe to say that most American families, that have been here for three or four generations, have some roots in the Channel Islands. This work contains interesting and useful background information on the Islands and Islanders, including maps, lists of Island surnames by state, etc. The bulk of the work is a genealogical dictionary which identifies thousands of known (or probable) Channel Island immigrants to America, and some of their descendants. There is also a section with brief sketches of people well-known in American history who had Channel Island roots: Sir Edmund Andros, John Bertram (merchant), General Sir Isaac Brock, the Cabots of Boston, Sir George Carteret, Buffalo Bill Cody, Philippe Langlois (Phillip English), Deming Jarves, Lillie Langtry, William N. Le Page (remember his glue?), John Wesley Masury (paint manufacturer), Nathaniel Messerve (ship builder), Paul Revere, Henry David Thoreau. This is a reprint of the 1984 edition, updated with six pages of corrections and additions.(1983), 2007, 51/2x81/2, cloth, 748 pp
