"The greatest musical prodigy since Mozart (some would say he was even greater), Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) excelled in everything he did, musical or otherwise, and during his brief life became Europe's most respected and beloved composer. Yet no musician suffered more drastic swings in his posthumous reputation, and as a result Mendelssohn's music was obscured by a host of extra-musical factors: changes in taste, the rise of nationalism, anti-Semitism, and contempt for Victorian culture. This "owner's manual" offers a guide to Mendelssohn's musical output, major and minor, providing points of entry into a large body of work, much of which remains far too little known. There's much more to Mendelssohn than the "Italian" Symphony and the "Midsummer Night's Dream" Overture, and a whole creative world of vivid, expressive, and fantastical music is ready for exploration."--
Three editors each associated with theatre collaborated on this book of monologues for actresses. What they discovered besides bravura pieces for auditions acting classes and study was the pulse of the millennial theatrical scene. A follow-up to the popular previous edition from the 1990s ÊOne on One: The Best Women''s Monologues for the 21st CenturyÊ includes the work of over 70 playwrights spotlighting the best of Broadway Off-Broadway regional and experimental writings since 2000. A special introduction also explains how to choose practice and perform a speech for auditions. Comic or serious ä or both ä the monologues are written for young old and multicultural players by famous names and up-and-coming talent.ÞAnna Deavere Smith records abuse in real relationships (ÊHouse ArrestÊ); August Wilson relates trials of those who survived coming to America ä and those who did not (ÊGem of the OceanÊ); and William Gibson recreates the dark fledgling days of Israel (ÊGolda''s BalconyÊ). Additional works include ÊAre You Ready?Ê by David Auburn ÊBad DatesÊ by Theresa Rebeck ÊThe CommitteeÊ by Brian Dykstra and many others.
There has been a great change in the last twenty years to actor auditions which now require the demonstration of enormous flexibility. The actor is often expected to show more range than ever before and often several shorter audition speeches are asked for instead of one or two longer ones. To stay at the top of his or her game the Shakespearean actor needs more knowledge of what makes the play tick especially since the early plays demand a different style from the later ones. Each genre (comedy history tragedy) has different requirements. No current monologue book deals directly with the bulk of these concerns. ÊOne More unto the Speech Dear FriendsÊ now fills that gap. This three volume set will help actors discover the extra details of humanity that the original folio texts automatically offer. Of Shakespeare''s 37 plays only ÊPericlesÊ is not included. In the trilogy of books there are over 900 separate audition possibilities. This represents about 600 more monologues than are available in any other series.ÞÞThere are four parts to each speech: Û A background giving context and approximate timing; Û A modern text version; Û The original folio version; Û Commentary to explain the differences between the two texts including full discussion of the devices peculiar to that speech''s genre the age and gender of the character and more.
