Born in Bentwood, Essex, the author Ted Bailey was sent to a boarding school in Croydon, just before he was seven-years-old.In those early schooldays, he was very small compared to most of his fellow pupils. There was some bullying which was difficult to avoid as a boarder. Also, he positively hated organised games, especially football outside in the winter. As they were compulsory, unfortunately, there was no getting out of them. Being useless at all sport, he was always the last pick for any team as he stood shivering alone. When finally picked he would hear the muttered groans: 'Oh no, not him again'. It was humiliating. One freezing February morning, everything suddenly changed for him. The dreaded football was off because of iced up pitches. 'Great!' he thought. But no, the alternative was as bad: some races around the rough school cinder track. No better! However, this session produced a startling outcome. A whole new direction in his school life followed this, which had long term results.
This personal memoir attempts to set out a blueprint for new NHS hospitals, alongside a commentary about a recent experience as a Trauma inpatient and outpatient in a large failing London teaching hospital which highlighted some of the difficulties and frustrations facing patients. This took place during the NHS's struggle with the Covid pandemic. The buildings and facilities within which patients are treated and staff have to work are so important to the wellbeing and successful outcomes for all concerned, but are too often ignored. This book suggests a hospital building-led strategy to restore trust and to tackle the need for improvements for patients and staff. This approach was tried before between 1970 and 1995. Then it was possible to show how new hospital buildings could promote change and innovation. Now is the time to try this again as the climate for change feels similar to that of the 1970s. A political will to sort out the NHS is essential. The NHS and its staff are in desperate need for action to deal with the backlog post- Covid. The book includes personal records covering the time spent as an inpatient and the long road to recovery, using WhatsApp messages, emails, letters and commentary. Alongside this is a description of a fantasy concept for smaller hospitals to provide a post Covid blueprint to help reduce the number of people waiting on the NHS for a surgical or medical procedure. It provides an insight into subsequent efforts to engage with "the powers that be" to improve the experience for future patients.
Policing Henley-on-Thames from Parish Constables to the formation of the Oxfordshire Constabulary in 1857 shows the progression from the hue and cry system required from every eligible citizen through to the duties of the parish constables selected annually from the population by the town Mayor, regardless of their wishes, to a more professional police in the small market town of Henley-on-Thames. The names of those private Henley citizens who were selected to carry out the duties of constable, are known through surviving records, newspaper reports and Assize and Quarter Session trial records. Parish Constables were expected to carry on their trade whilst being called upon at any time to fulfill their policing duties. Their only reward were expenses, being paid by the victim of crime, once a successful prosecution was obtained. Reporting to the towns Justices, these Henley constables maintained law and order in the town, dealing with diverse offences of Murder, Assault, Burglary and Larceny, with sentences resulting in imprisonment, and on occasions transportation to Australia, or the death penalty. In 1830 the corporation decided that the town needed a more 'professional' police force which resulted in two salaried constables, serving for more than the one year of previous parish constables. One resident, Henry Stephens became the longest serving Henley constable from 1834 to 1862 and was regarded as 'our active constable' in local newspapers. A hero by todays standards he relentlessly pursued criminals bringing them to justice for over a quarter of a century, only to die a pauper. This book lists the names of many of those who served as constables in the town from the time of Frankpledge in the fourteenth, up to the formation of the Oxfordshire Constabulary in 1857, and those officials and townsfolk their duties bought them into contact with.

Set in the fictional former mining village of Brodworth some ten years after the closure of the local pit, SCRAP tells the story of fifty-year old former miner Phil Steele's attempt to once again earn an honest living and recover his pride and dignity. Phil is still struggling to find a new purpose in life following the closure of the pit and fears being thrown on the scrapheap. He is not the man he was and this is affecting his family. His wife, Deb, is frustrated and is pursuing her own dream of owning and running a café, with or without his support. His unemployed son, Gav, has shown little interest in joining a father-son plumbing business, preferring instead to earn 'easy' (probably illegal) money with his mates doing 'a bit of this and a bit of that'. Phil clings to the past, as a member of a mining community, by retreating to his garage to work on his classic BSA Golden Flash motorbike - a restoration project he started just weeks before the miners' strike began. The bike is the last remaining symbol of the hope, pride and dignity he had as a young miner. Now, in the final week of his training course, he has a violent encounter with an old enemy from his days on the picket line. This leads Phil to acknowledge that his inability to move on from his past life has made him self-centred and endangered his own and his family's safety.

Recognising the significant number of procurement fraud and corruption risks that can impact an organisation - including roles and people who have the potential to influence or manipulate projects and the procurement life cycle that might include a lack of trained personnel, procurement and financial controls, and compliance measures in place - can undermine the design and implementation of an anti-corruption and counter procurement fraud approach. Since procurement fraud and corruption continue to develop in scope, scale and creativity, the risks, typologies and routes to mitigation should be regarded as part of a constantly assessed and updated approach.Creating an anti-corruption and counter procurement fraud approach should provide an awareness of the criminal risks within an organisation's procurement and associated processes and reinforce the importance and vital role of leadership, ethics professionals, staff and other stakeholders in building an anti-corruption culture to protect organisational revenues and reputation. The 4-pillar framework approach to counter procurement fraud contains 16 steps to identify and prevent corruption and procurement fraud risk. It examines how a risk mitigation framework created with a foundation of education, data collection, risk assessment and a coordinated response and change management process can help identify and mitigate risk. Planning and following this approach one step at a time, collecting all available data, will assist in assessing the challenges and performance measurement in each area and help create a strategic response to identified risk.

A seventeen-year-old boy who lived in Blackpool met a seventeen-year-old girl from Accrington on a night out at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom and became penfriends. The purpose of this book is hopefully to make people aware of the future of this wonderful planet of ours. Yannis Vadakastanis is a man that was born on the Greek island of Zakynthos and at a young age became aware of the plight of the loggerhead turtles better known locally as caretta caretta. He then decided to try and help these wonderful animals that were here before the dinosaurs. For the last thirty years plus he has been building a centre in Gerakas Zakynthos, but this book is not just about him, it is about the wildlife, flora and fauna that live on this island that are struggling to survive now that tourism is deeply rooted on the island. the problem with discarded rubbish, not just here is a massive worrying problem all over the planet and should be a concern for everybody that lives on it! The greed for money and profit are guilty of destroying wildlife faster than we can ever imagine. Just think of the Amazon forests that are being destroyed daily and not forgetting the lust for palm oil. Every living thing has the absolute right to live peacefully and safely on this planet, "not just us". We can and should all live in harmony, nature has no problem taking care of its own, so what gives us the right to decide that we can destroy the planet. We are the only species on this earth that seem to think that we have the right to do so, and we are the only ones that can save it. if we decide to ignore it, then there will be nothing for the future. I hope that if after reading this book it will help you realise that this is not fiction but fact. " It's up to us, do you really want a paradise lost". The author Michael james Elves...

This inspirational autobiography opens a window on the uniquely individual life of Vadim Muntagirov, one of the most celebrated dancers of our time.Vadim left home aged 10 to enter full time ballet training, arrived at The Royal Ballet School via the Prix de Lausanne aged 16 with no English, was cast as Albrecht in English National Ballet's Giselle aged 19 and danced Siegfried in Swan Lake at The Royal Albert Hall to considerable acclaim less than a year after graduating. Since then, with an expanded repertoire as a Principal with The Royal Ballet and in parallel demand as an international guest, Vadim's early promise has translated into a stellar career. Nicknamed Vadream, he is hugely admired and very much loved by audiences at home and abroad.Vadim's story affords a real insight into the intense work and level of commitment needed to rise to the top in ballet - and stay there. It enables readers to see the experiences which have shaped him, including the lasting effect of separation from his family, his rigorous early training, his discovery of a world beyond his homeland, and the unstinting support he has received in his adopted country as a student and during his years in the profession. This is a book which looks 'behind the scenes' and 'beyond the interviews' to reveal what is involved in becoming and being a Principal dancer, including the privilege of working with many ballet luminaries, the more informal moments, and the many etceteras which come with the job.But Vadim makes it about so much more than the daily 'ins and outs' as he shares his reactions, thoughts and emotions in a way which allows others to get to know him as a person.
This is a literary thriller about domestic violence and complicated family relationships. The story is set against the backdrop of the emigration story of a Dutch couple in the 1960s. Humanity's Rage is a poignant exploration of man's inhumanity to man, its origins, and what is known as 'compassion fatigue' - that loss of sensitivity to the suffering of others that is a result of both our natural selfishness and an over-exposure to grim images of pain and misery. But instigating, allowing or simply ignoring such suffering does not only hurt those who need our sympathy and assistance - it also hurts us as individuals and as a collective human group. Written in a very distinctive prose style, full of repetitions and ellipses that give the writing a faltering sense of hesitancy or outrage. It is a compassionate cry from the heart, urging us all to look to our fellow humans' suffering rather than turning a blind eye.
