Jacob of Serugh (died 521) is best known for his many imaginative verse homilies on biblical and other topics. A small number of stanzaic poems attributed to him also survive in old manuscripts, but these have hitherto been largely forgotten, apart from a few odd stanzas here and there which have been preserved in certain liturgical texts. A collection of twenty-five of these poems is presented here for the first time in their full form.

In his Commentary on Daniel, the earliest extant Christian commentary, Hippolytus interprets the deeds and visions of Daniel against the backdrop of contemporary Roman persecution and eschatological expectation, thus providing much information about Christian affairs in the early third century. Throughout the commentary Hippolytus further discusses his distinctive Logos theology and also makes mention of various liturgical practices evolving baptism, anointing, the celebration of Easter and perhaps the date of Christmas.

This book is a study of the contribution of Isaac Barrow (1630-1677), Master of Trinity College (Cambridge), to Western perceptions of Islam in the 17th century. In particular, it provides a translation and study of Barrow's Latin essay on Islam (written in Constantinople), a Sermon on Islam and several other works that set out an embryonic theory of religion. Arguably, Barrow's writing on Islam is the first by a mainstream English scholar to move away from total hostility toward an empathetic approach that contemplated the possibility of salvation for Muslims. His work contributes to contemporary dilemmas and challenges on the nature of religion.
