The author Heather Marshall was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1952. Her parents were separated before she was born and since her father had always lived in South Carolina, the first time they met was when she was twenty-seven. She went to high school in Dundonald near Belfast and did not go to college at that time. She met her husband Michael in 1975 and they married a year later. Their son was born in 1980. A major complication to their lives came a few nights after the birth when Heather had a serious manic depressive episode which caused their son to be taken into care by the authorities. They did not return Keith to their custody.This caused major changes in their lives, and if they were ever to be a family, a way would have to be found. They ended up immigrating to America and living in South Carolina to live with Heather's father. They have built a life there. Michael has a trucking business and his son Keith has worked with him but now lives and works for a trucking company in Iowa. They now have a daughter, Melanie, who is their office manager. Heather went to Technical College, graduated in 1990, and worked in the local regional hospital for twenty three years as a lab tech before retiring in 2014. Michael and Heather usually go back to Belfast once a year or so to visit family.

In short, how can we enact equal measures of fairness among family members, friends, and strangers? These are the troubling questions that guide Dr. Otto Toews as he critically engages with the language of morality and uncovers what is lacking in our conversations about fairness. Using a Principled Thinking Model for resolving everyday moral dilemmas, Toews identifies five basic categories that are necessary for moral thinking: duty, rights, motive, desert, and justice. Combining this research with Nel Nodding's seminal work on caring, Toews concludes that while it is vital that we practice thinking through moral dilemmas, the key to attaining universal justice and fairness lies in our sense of fellow feeling, or empathy. Toews argues that without the urgency and energy prompted by a sense of concern for others, thinking through moral dilemmas will remain insufficient in fostering an ethical world.Throughout the book, Toews augments his research by providing hypothetical scenarios involving two teachers, Bill and Mae. They engage in spirited debates over how duty, rights, motive, desert, and justice apply to issues such as education, cyber bullying, mental illness, reconciliation, and more. Again and again, Bill and Mae are caught up by the power of empathy, demonstrating the urgent need to care for others. It is through their dialogues that Toews has designed a brilliant way for us to witness moral thinking in action, giving us the language we need to navigate it, and preparing us for the countless types of conflicts we encounter every day.

The inspiration to tell his story can be accredited to his wife, Teresa; Gordon states that she believed his story would not only help others, but inspire them as well, regardless if they have experienced trauma within their lives. Gordon's fractured past did not hold him back from becoming a former U.S. Army Sniper, Army Ranger, and Army Special Forces (Green Beret). With his relentless desire to overcome and his relationship with Jesus Christ, the challenges he faced in academia did not hold him back from achieving multiple degrees. He holds a bachelor's degree in Business administration, a Master's degree in Ministry, and a Master's degree in Leadership. Born into a family of 17 siblings, a large family was all that I knew. I grew up in the cotton fields of Mississippi. When I started my family, I finished with 13 children. I truly am a QUEEN MOTHER.One thing that comes with a large family is a lot of love and not enough money.
