Entonces, Nicodemo respondió confundido: "¿Cómo puede un hombre nacer siendo viejo? ¿Puede acaso entrar por segunda vez en el vientre de su madre, y nacer? Jesucristo le enseñaba a Nicodemo que cada individuo que entre al cielo debe tener dos cumpleaños: uno físico y uno espiritual. Primero tiene que nacer en una familia física y luego tiene que elegir personalmente nacer en la familia espiritual de Dios, creyendo en la muerte, entierro, y resurrección de Jesucristo como el único pago por sus pecados (Juan 1:12-13, Efesios 2:1-10). Aunque la vida física en esta tierra es temporal, Jesús le prometió a Nicodemo que la vida espiritual que Dios da es eterna. En Juan 3:16-18, Jesús dice "Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna. Porque no envió Dios a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo sea salvo por él. El que en él cree, no es condenado; pero el que no cree, ya ha sido condenado, porque no ha creído en el nombre del unigénito Hijo de Dios."Jesucristo fue enviado al mundo por Dios el Padre "a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido" (Lucas 19:10). Fue enviado para dar la vida espiritual a los que estaban "muertos en vuestros delitos y pecados" (Efesios 2:1). A través de Su obra terminada en la cruz, Él ha dado, "a todos los que le recibieron, a los que creen en su nombre, les dio potestad de ser hechos hijos de Dios" (Juan 1:12). Jesucristo vino a sacrificarse para que tú y yo "[tengamos] vida, y para que la [tengamos] en abundancia." (Juan 10:10). Y Dios ha prometido que "si alguno está en Cristo, nueva criatura es; las cosas viejas pasaron; he aquí todas son hechas nuevas" (II Corintios 5:17).Jesucristo no sólo ha proporcionado la oportunidad para que cada creyente tenga una nueva vida como uno de los hijos de Dios, sino que también ha dejado un "ejemplo, para que sigáis sus pisadas; el cual no hizo pecado, ni se halló engaño en su boca; quien cuando le maldecían, no respondía con maldición; cuando padecía, no amenazaba, sino encomendaba la causa al que juzga justamente" (I Pedro 2:21-23). I Juan 2:6 enseña que "El que dice que permanece en él, debe andar como él anduvo." Si un creyente verdaderamente depende en Jesucristo para su vida nueva, él debe desear vivir según el ejemplo que Jesucristo le proveyó.
