Book DescriptionDemystifying the Akasha:Consciousness and the Quantum VacuumDuality, including the spiritual/material and mind/body dichotomies, has been the basis of the Western paradigm for four hundred years, andhas been blamed for major world problems. Meanwhile, in the East, nonduality has prevailed. While science isgenerally seen in opposition to nonduality, this book sets out to provethe compatibility of the scientifi c outlook and the spiritualnonduality of India by constructing a mathematical model of cosmicconsciousness. The ideas and their history are presented nontechnically in Part One, while the full mathematical details arepresented in Part Two.Ralph Abraham is Professor of Mathematics at the University ofCalifornia at Santa Cruz, one of the pioneers of chaos theory. He isthe author or coauthor of several math texts, including Foundations of Mechanics,Dynamics the Geometry of Behavior, and Chaos in Discrete DynamicalSystems. He has also written books on the history of math, philosophy, and the arts, such as Chaos, Creativity, and CosmicConsciousness and The Evolutionary Mind.Sisir Roy is Professor of Theoretical Physics, Indian StatisticalInstitute, Kolkata. His field of interest covers foundations of quantummechanics, cosmology, functional geometry and brain function. A book for all serious students of cosmos andconsciousness." -Dr. Ervin Laszlo,Author of Science andthe Akashic Field
Everyone experiences conflict and, at times, feels overwhelmed. When we remain calm and centered, see clearly what the conflict is about and where it is coming from, address the conflict creatively and assertively, and create what we need without expecting or depending on others to change, the result is personal, relational, social, and spiritual transformation. As we master the skills of conflict resolution this transformation comes more easily to us and we are able to support others in resolving their conflicts. Just Conflict helps readers gain greater confidence about their capacity to name, address, and resolve whatever conflict arises so that, when they discover issues in any relationship, they are able to say, "Oh, it's just conflict." These tools help the reader become more adept at knowing what is missing for them when conflicts emerge and to make the choices which get all parties what they need. It is the ability to construct justice out of turmoil which makes conflict just. Dr. Robinson is the Executive Director of the Center for Creative Conflict Resolution and a pastoral counselor who has provided psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families experiencing high levels of conflict for 30 years. American Guru is a multifaceted account of life in the contemporaryspiritual community known as EnlightenNext, and the controversial"teaching methods" of its New York-born founder, self-proclaimed "guru"Andrew Cohen. With contributions from several of Cohen's formerstudents, William Yenner recalls the thirteen-year trajectory of hiscareer as a leader and manager in Cohen's community--his early days asan idealistic "seeker," his years of service on EnlightenNext's Board ofDirectors, his ultimate disillusionment and departure, and his efforts tomake sense of his experiences as a once-devoted follower of a "Teacherof Evolutionary Enlightenment." With wit and insight, Yenner and hiscolleagues have produced a riveting cautionary tale on the dangers ofauthoritarian spirituality, and an insider'scase study on the promisesand pitfalls of postmodern discipleship."William Yenner's courageous exposé, American Guru, is a powerfulreminder that all of our tendencies toward idealization of dharmateachers must be carefully examined." -William Morgan, Psy.D., member ofthe Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy,co-author of Mindfulnessand Psychotherapy"William Yenner's true, uncensored-and finally ungagged-moving personalstory, in combination with the powerful reflections, recollections andcontributions of other former community members, makes American Guru anessential source document for the study and understanding ofauthoritarian spiritual sects." -Hal Blacker, former editor ofEnlightenNext magazine"American Guru is not a mean-spirited book. It is, rather, arefreshingly honest one." -David Christopher Lane, Ph.D., Professor ofPhilosophy, Mt. San Antonio CollegeCheck out the book online at www.americanguru.net
Authors think of their writings as their children. Produced with infinite care, shown to a few friends, and lovingly tucked away in some obscure file where they sleep undisturbed. I came across one such file recently. It was entitled "Miscellaneous writings: poems, stories, essays, etc." I felt it was time to wake them for public scrutiny. So here they are. Please be kind. They're fragile.
We have discovered a pattern for cultural bifurcations involving artists making significant contributions to the history of mathematics. How much of this material would you recognize as mathematics on the basis of your schooleducation? How much appears on standard tests? And what kind of training best supports the development of your natural mathematical skills? How is theintegration of mathematics and culture faring today? The six stories of this book-in addition to being examples ofcultural ecologies, mathematical mentalities, and bolts from theblue-exhibit the integration of math and cultural history, thebasis of a new way of teaching math in school.
