Media and Information Literacy in Higher Education: Educating the Educators is written for librarians and educators working in universities and university colleges, providing them with the information they need to teach media and information literacy to students at levels ranging from bachelor to doctoral studies. In order to do so, they need to be familiar with students'' strengths and weaknesses regarding MIL. This book investigates what university and college students need to know about searching for, and evaluating, information, and how teaching and learning can be planned and carried out to improve MIL skills. The discussions focus on the use of process-based inquiry approaches for developing media and information literacy competence, involving students in active learning and open-ended investigations and emphasizing their personal learning process. It embraces face-to-face teaching, and newer forms of online education.Examines the intersecting roles of academic librarians, teacher educators, and library educators in preparing library students and teacher education students to use the library Brings new perspectives from both teacher educator and library educator, and draws connections between higher and secondary education (K12)Draws on a number of competences, skills, knowledge, experiences, and reflections from a variety of perspectives, and focuses on libraries as efficient tools in all kinds of education and learning activitiesWritten by an international group of authors with firsthand experience of teaching MILLooks at how libraries can contribute to the promotion of civic literacy within higher education institutions and in society more widely

Enterprise Content Management, Records Management and Information Culture Amidst E-Government Development investigates the key differences between Enterprise Content Management (ECM) and Records Management (RM), hence identifying factors that contribute to a well-functioning information infrastructure. The book explores how information culture impacts the management of public information, also emphasizing the need for information/records management skills amidst e-Government developments. The information society and the paperless office are, by now, two timeworn metaphors of contemporary society where information is considered the main asset and vehicle for economic, cultural, and political achievement that is enhanced by the use of information technology. Though promises of exclusively digital information have not yet been fulfilled, in recent years, we have witnessed a transformation of the information landscape, traditional modes of communication, and everyday life. This development affects government performance, and that of other public institutions, thus impacting their interaction with citizens.Presents research with broad application based on archives and information science, but relevant for information systems, records management, information culture, and e-governmentExamines the differences between Enterprise Content Management and Records ManagementBridges a gap between the proponents of Enterprise Content Management and information professionals, such as records managers and archivists

Nanofiber Composite Materials for Biomedical Applications presents new developments and recent advances in nanofiber-reinforced composite materials and their use in biomedical applications, including biomaterial developments, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Unlike more conventional titles on composite materials, this book covers the most innovative new developments in nanofiber-based composites, including polymers, ceramics, and metals, with particular emphasis on their preparation and characterization methodology. Selected case studies illustrate new developments in clinical and preclinical use, making the information critical for the development of new medical materials and systems for use in human health care, and for the exploration of new design spaces based on these nanofibers. This book is essential reading for those working in biomedical science and engineering, materials science, nanoscience, biomedical nanotechnology, and biotechnology.Covers innovative new developments in nanofiber composites, including polymers, ceramics, and metals with particular emphasis on their preparation and characterization methodologyDeals with biomedical applications, including biomaterials developments, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicinePresents selected case studies on nanofiber composite materials in both clinical and preclinical use

    - Information Literacy in the Life Sciences

Most faculty in science departments recognize the importance of preparing their students to find, organize, and analyze scientific literature, and to effectively communicate and discuss scientific issues. Employers also look for science graduates with those skills and who demonstrate good written and oral communication abilities. Many college courses, however, tend to be either content courses where good writing skills are required but not taught, or writing courses in which only general research and critical thinking skills are emphasized. As much as we would like students to access library information and to write clear scientific prose, the reality is that often they cannot do either effectively. Agriculture to Zoology describes a new paradigm with a conscious integration of information literacy activities with subject-specific content. Collaboration between librarian and subject discipline faculty is especially important, and is an essential element of successful integration of information literacy principles in the science classroom. Working together to develop appropriate and relevant library assignments in science classes fosters a collegial relationship between the discipline faculty member and the librarian, and allows each to recognize the other''s strengths and specializations. Faculty-librarian collaborations make for more effective instruction overall and decreases the feeling-common in many places-that librarians are irrelevant, or at best tangential, to the instructional mission of the university. Specialized focus on information literacy in the life science disciplines, rather than information literacy in generalDiscussion of library instruction, featuring methods, tools, and assignments to engage students in different areas of the life sciencesChapters on specific life science subjects will highlight traditional as well as non-traditional sourcesComparison of information literacy in the sciences from an international perspective
