"Burke writes clearly and concisely, and is able to capture painful emotions from a series of characters. Written in multiple third-person perspectives, as well as diary entries written in first-person narrative, In My Wildest Dreams is an interesting page-turner with excellent pacing. Burke keeps the reader invested by supplying fun cultural nostalgia, unique characters, a riveting storyline, drama, and lovely romance. She had her friends, her favorite music, and the love of one boy who remained within the depths of her heart. 1968>2016>When Annie retreats to a 1920s cottage in the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama, she loses herself in the restoration of the house and gardens. She feels like a social outcast and wants nothing to do with her former country club life, but her matchmaking best friend, Carol Blaine, has other ideas. Annie is plagued with social anxiety and painful insecurity and isn't ready to meet anyone. But when Annie rediscovers her teenage journal from 1968 and the tattered scrapbook from the most memorable summer of her life, she realizes her deep love for Mitch Brandon never stopped - it was just put on hold for fifty years. Their breakup so many years ago was brutal, but she never forgot the shy and handsome boy who captured her heart at first glance. Annie can't help but wonder - does Mitch still live in the area? Is he married? Would she recognize him if she saw him again? But all the questions lead her to a painful reality. Is he still alive? Annie's hopes and dreams are instantly filled with the boy from so long ago, but the chance of reconnecting with Mitch is one in a million - until one morning, she hears a familiar voice from the past. The giant triton (Charonia tritonis) is a beautiful shell and a well-known predator of the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci). In many parts of the third world, it is still being collected in large numbers and sold to tourists as ornaments. As you admire the beautiful shell, spare a thought for the hungry mollusc that died. And don't forget, they live on starfish. Many species of starfish are known to outbreak in different parts of the world. Prior to human collection, the giant triton might have controlled starfish numbers not by eating the many, but by preventing the aggregation that precedes the outbreak. At present, little is known of any aspect of the triton's ecology despite its obvious importance in controlling starfish numbers. While the giant triton may be protected on the Great Barrier Reef and elsewhere in Queensland, there is still no evidence this protection has resulted in restored populations of the giant triton. However, there is evidence of continuing illegal collection and trade in Indonesia where it is also legally protected. It is now worth reconsidering whether the existing local protection is sufficient or whether further international protection is required by listing the Giant Triton in Appendix 2 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

This book is about "subitizing." It's a critical, but almost universally overlooked, very early math skill. The author is a Harvard MBA who became so concerned about "what's happening" in early math education as she tutored her own children that she turned her attention to how children learn math (and what can go wrong) and earned a PhD in Math Ed. What's subitizing? Subitizing involves recognizing small quantities (like groups up to 3 or 4) without counting. It's an absolutely key, but rarely taught, foundational math skill. By starting with subitizing, Very Early Math - SET 1 helps your child build a strong math foundation. Subitizing isn't only important for its own sake, it's key to developing strong counting skills, especially learning why we count and how counting works. Perhaps you're thinking, "But, my child can already count to 10 or 20, so why subitize?" Here's why. Many children who are great at rote counting have no idea why they are counting. To them counting has no mathematical meaning, it's just a rhyme they say as they point to and touch things. For many of these children, they'll count a group, "one, two, three," and think "three is the name of the last item they counted, not the size of the group (of three). And if that view persists, what will 1 + 3 = 4 mean to that child? That an item named "1" + and item named "3" = an item named "4" because "that's the rule." YIKES! That doesn't work! Such children will be able to master rote counting and memorize math facts, but they won't understand the math they represent. Their math foundation will comprise unconnected memorized information lacking in mathematical meaning. Since all arithmetic, like 1 + 3 = 4 is based on the foundational idea that numbers tell us the size of groups, why not be sure we establish that understanding of numbers right away. Subitizing does this. Rote counting does not. But starting with subitizing isn't enough. It turns out that the way we teach a child to count matters, and a lot of what we think is helpful, isn't. That's where Very Early Math - SET 2 comes in. This book helps your little one to count in a way that has been shown to give children the understanding of numbers they'll need to understand math. (Studies find that small differences in how a child is taught to count can make a very big difference in their understanding of numbers.) Like early phonics books, these very early math books give you page after page of carefully designed and sequenced math materials to help your little one build key early math skills. So, be sure to check out Very Early Math - SET 1 & 2. Using them before you give your little ones counting books and workbooks can make a big difference!

It's hard to hold the memories of two thousand years in a human brain.Lost in grief and longing for her deceased children, the Mambo lingers at her children's graves, talks to their spirits, and brings toys and offerings to entice them to stay close. Lilly, with the help of the present-day Vodou Queen and the high priestess Jolene, helps the ancient woman remember the many adventures of her long life and the power she has gathered through the centuries. A cult called The Crimson Monks believes the Mambo holds the key to the ancient Anunnaki tincture that promises immortality. Feared by those who cross their path, the Crimson Monks possess the Spear of Destiny - a powerful weapon that destroys life and soul in one fell swoop. They have one mission, destroy the woman they believe holds the last vial of tincture and gift themselves with eternal life. When the Crimson monks block the Mambo's access to her children's spirits and banish her from the cemetery unless she gives them the tincture, she seeks the help of the witches of Panthea's Coven. Together they work to defeat the Crimson monks and free the planet from their evil threat. The most powerful members of Panthea's Coven search for the one thing that can protect them from the spear of destiny and allow them to defeat the monks: the shield of the Black Forest Fae.Can the witches overpower the demons guarding the shield? "A fantastically rich and entertaining piece of work with an original sharp edge."-- Jim Woodring (writer/artist of Weathercraft, The Frank Book, and One Beautiful Spring Day)A mixture of urban fantasy and Los Angeles noir, DEAD MONKEY RUM revolves around a stolen Tiki idol that contains the ashes of visionary artist Stanislaw Szukalski. Our heroes, an alcoholic monkey named Robert Mclintlock and a beautiful bartender named Stephanie Waterfall, must locate the missing statue in the wilds of Los Angeles before a tribe of pissed-off Yetis can get their massive, dirty paws on it. Because the obsidian idol possesses magical properties, the cryptozoological beasts intend to use it to kickstart the destruction of the entire human race.DEAD MONKEY RUM is an alcohol-fueled voyage through the heart of Los Angeles. This tumultuous odyssey amidst the Tiki bars, illicit casinos, exclusive hotels, trains, buses, and hidden tunnels and grottoes that lay beneath the City of Angels propels our hero, Robert McLintock (who just so happens to be a wiseacre simian conman from a small island called Koshima located off the coast of Japan), from his comfort zone in Orange County, into the violent byways of Hollywood, and far beyond Southern California to the Rano Rarako volcanic crater on the remotest island in the world, Rana Nui, also known as Easter Island, where our heroes ultimately engage in a final, fierce, knockout battle with an army of homicidal Abominable Snowmen for the control of Planet Earth."Stanislaw Szukalski would love DEAD MONKEY RUM. This novel is addictive like a heavy drug. Make space in your calendar to read it all."-- Irek Dobrowolski (director of the Netflix documentary, Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski)"Yetis, Tiki Gods, Cryptozoology, and rum-filled adventure! Sign me up and tell me when the ship sails! I'm recommending this Robert Guffey novel to all my friends, family, and foes to take their minds completely off whatever they are thinking about, Wonderful."-- Loren Coleman (Mysterious America, The Field Guide to Lake Monsters and Sea Serpents, The Field Guide to Bigfoot, Curious Encounters, and 40 other books - Director of the International Cryptozoology Museum)"Robert Guffey's fantastic novel, DEAD MONKEY RUM, will at least bring your brain out of a coma, if not get your imagination off the couch. This is a thinly masked tribute /adventure to the late Stanislaw Szukalski and his boundless imagination. This book is a mental gymnasium."-- Robert Williams (Visual Addiction, Hysteria in Remission, and Through Prehensile Eyes)
